Book excerpt: Key Works / Key Texts Interdisciplinary approach and theoretical foundation in artistic practice have always been part of the work by Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg (1943-2005), yet for him, painting had always remained essential. His artistic position therefore still remains quite unique not least because he, first of all, posed the existential question of perception. Without the artist's, as well as the viewers' perception, and the constant confrontation with ever-changing conditions, there would be no work of art. This can only be process-oriented and subject to various phenomena, and therefore cannot be reduced to just the object. Thus Rémy Zaugg always considered painting (since the 1960s) a kind of basic research for any applied projects, be it in architecture or urbanism. His writing on museum and exhibition architecture (from the 1980s and 1990s) may be regarded as key works on artistic examination, where amazingly simple realisations are formulated using rather suggestive rhetoric. This retrospective volume appears on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of the artist; there is currently no publication on his artwork available on the market. In addition, this book contains a small cross section of the unusual essay work by the artist. Book excerpt: At last, the broader movements of twentieth-century Swiss art--and the individual artists behind them--are tracked through the present day in one standard-setting publication. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness sets the famous Swiss tendency toward precision and order alongside the tendency toward obstinacy and chaos, pairing canonical works with pieces made within the past 40 years. Provocative pairs include Max Bill and John Armleder, Ferdinand Hodler and Urs Lüthi, Alberto Giacometti and Rémy Zaugg, Louis Soutter and Martin Disler, Robert Müller and Sylvie Fleury, Paul Klee and Silvia Bächli, Adolph Wölfli and Ugo Rondinone. Tensions emerge between the focused and the expansive, over everyday life in the Swiss state, and naturally over the mountains. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness is of interest on its own analytic terms, and as an excellent overview of the country's art since 1850.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To engage with the aesthetic is to watch yourself watching – and what you see cannot be reached, for all that exists is the reflection of the vision performed by you. The aesthetic experience offers insights into the consciousness that are both ancient and linked to creative inventions in present-day art culture. In A Place to Know, Margaretha Rossholm Lagerlöf interprets twelve recent artworks, from Sol LeWitt to Katharina Grosse. She sets out the unique claims and qualities which are inherent in seeing and understanding contemporary art. The book presents four analytical categories of artwork, charting the character of the aesthetic experience and the traditions that determine how we think about visual art. She peels back the layers of consciousness to lay bare the forgotten seams of experience, interwoven with artistic expression. The ancient thus arcs into a deepened awareness of avant-garde art.

This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1996 and 2000 the renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron built a new research centre together with a library, auditorium and cafeteria for the pharmaceutical company Roche in Basle. Situated on the outskirts of the town on the edge of the industrial area, the building was to include a closed section for laboratories yet should also be publicly accessible: the ideal starting point for an interdisciplinary solution. Artist Rémy Zaugg worked together with the architects developing the colours used. In particular he created a dramatic blue wall which separates public and restricted areas. This publication documents the entire project from its genesis to the completed construction, using texts, sketches, plans and photographs. More than a mere monograph, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the creative collaboration occuring between architects and artists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skin in the Game follows on from the acclaimed fieldwork diary, The Metabolic Museum. In this new book, Clémentine Deliss expands on how artists understand risk and contention both in their work and with regard to historical collections. Through a series of compelling conversations, questions are raised on how to work on colonial collections through the concept of the "prototype" as generative of a multiplicity of non-exclusive interpretations. The book includes interviews with leading women artists spanning two generations—Ruth Buchanan, Otobong Nkanga, Collier Schorr, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, and Andrea Zittel—in which they discuss that moment of "skin in the game," when each of them took the decision to become an artist, to enter the Hades of an uncertain existence and the Heaven of aesthetic experiment. What was the prototype that defined their career and their life's trajectory, that like a revenant returns over the course of an artist's lifetime? CLÉMENTINE DELISS (*1960, London) is an independent curator whose practice crosses the borders of contemporary art, critical anthropology and curatorial experimentation. She is internationally recognized for her seminal work on the Post-Ethnographic, on African modernism, and for her interventionist practices in art. She is Honorary Global Humanities Professor of History of Art at the University of Cambridge, and Associate Curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin.

Book excerpt: An insider's look at art museums and how they shape the ways we view art, through the eyes of the architects who design them. Architects and art lovers everywhere will enjoy this remarkable collection of interviews from sixteen of the world's most celebrated, thoughtful, and innovative architects who have designed many of the world’s greatest museums. Spanning generations, geographies, and methods of architectural practice, these architects share the complex and fascinating process of creating spaces for art. Building Culture includes interviews with: Frank Gehry, who reveals how a half-century of dialogue with the visual arts influenced his revolutionary Guggenheim Bilbao. Kulapat Yantrasast, who describes his rethinking of exhibition design and how it expands the presentation of work in venerable institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he is currently redesigning the galleries for the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Walter Hood, whose long interest in improvisational techniques in music informed his design for outdoor performance spaces in the Oakland Museum. Elizabeth Diller, whose conception of the Shed in New York City's Hudson Yards was influenced by decades of work in conceptual and performance art. Esteemed architects who have designed, renovated, or created galleries for MoMA, the New Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York; the National Gallery and the Tate Modern in London; the Pérez Art Museum Miami; the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in Japan; the Museum of West African Art (currently under construction) in Nigeria; and many others. This lively compendium reveals intensely varied architectural philosophies from a diverse group of established and up-and-coming professionals. Engaging personal recollections of relationships with artists and curators, along with 80 captivating images, provide further insight into the design process and timeless inspiration for architecture students, artists, museum professionals, and anyone fascinated by architectural design, public space, and museum culture.
