Book Synopsis Sources of Behavioral Variance in Process Safety by : Timothy D. Ludwig
Download or read book Sources of Behavioral Variance in Process Safety written by Timothy D. Ludwig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process safety management seeks to establish a multi-level system to assess, document, maintain, and inspect equipment and work practices integral in controlling highly toxic and/or reactive materials. In a highly engineered environment, any variance can set off a chain of events that increases the probability of a process safety incident as violent as an explosion. Human behavior is often the biggest source of this variance, but it can also be the biggest asset for process safety management. Process industries are looking to understand sources of behavioral variance and build better processes based on sound behavioral science. Because of this clear link between behavior and process safety performance, the behavior science community has been challenged to research the behavioral root causes leading to variation that threaten process safety; create and evaluate behavioral interventions to mitigate this variation; and identify the system factors that would influence the behaviors necessary to promote process safety. This book seeks to translate behavior analysis into practical systems that can help reduce human suffering from catastrophic process safety events. All of the chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management.

Book excerpt: Despite good intentions, the environment within which people work can unfortunately encourage at-risk behavior. Both formal systems (e.g., incentives, measurement systems) and informal systems (e.g., peer pressure, safety interactions) have tremendous influence on safety-related behaviors at all levels of the organization. The more leaders and safety professionals can accurately assess the behavioral impact of formal and informal systems, the better able they are to adjust their systems to improve safety performance and safety culture. Understanding behavior scientifically is key. This book will demonstrate how the science of behavior can be used to create safe habits and assess and improve organizational systems. The result is dramatic improvement in all aspects of safety.

Book Synopsis Dysfunctional Organizations by : DAVID D. VAN FLEET
Download or read book Dysfunctional Organizations written by DAVID D. VAN FLEET and published by . This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dysfunctional organizations result from individual behavior and the cultures they develop. Many individuals have directly experienced some form of dysfunctional behavior, including trauma from nonfatal workplace violence, bullying, harassment, violence, and unsafe work practices. These and other unacceptable workplace behaviors pose significant problems in organizations. Psychological safety deals with these behaviors and prevents organizations from becoming dysfunctional. It may not be "the" way to prevent dysfunctions, but it certainly is "a" way. This book uses simple and direct words to describe forms of behavior that are obstacles to developing psychological safety. It then provides practical guidance for what can and should be done to remove those obstacles. A unique framework (V-REEL) enables a better understanding of how and why behaviors are associated with dysfunctional organizations. It indicates the value of having psychologically, psychosocially, and physically safe workplaces. Its use helps the reader to carefully identify factors that erode or chip away safe workplaces as well as factors that enable or help to create them.

Book Synopsis ICT and Food Security in Africa by : Adebusuyi Isaac Adeniran
Download or read book ICT and Food Security in Africa written by Adebusuyi Isaac Adeniran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides apt and timely insights into how a globalizing African society could use the array of opportunities that various applications of ICT offer to supply much-needed food sustainability for the people of Africa. Looking at the entire agricultural value chain, the book presents a viable empirical framework for engaging with ICT in processes of food production and distribution, especially for rural low-scale agriculturists. It also depicts how the platform of ICT could play a central role in making the larger continental-goal of sustainable food security a realistic projection. In addition, the text considers how different regional dynamics could either enable or disable the efficient deployment of ICTs in the process of agricultural production in Africa, and highlights the relative progress that has been recorded in some parts of Africa in respect to the use of various ICT platforms in processes of agricultural production and distribution. The book will be particularly useful for students, researchers, teachers and policy makers working in the intersection between technology and food security.
