Book excerpt: Wastewater from industry can lead to water pollution if untreated, especially due to its high concentration of heavy metals. Heavy metals are considered extremely harmful because they can cause illnesses, disorder and diseases to human. Therefore, industrial wastewater containing heavy metal should be treated before discharge to the water stream but its treatment is very costly. There are several techniques to remove heavy metals from wastewater such as biosorption, filtration and adsorption of heavy metal but there is some limitation such as long treatment time. This research is about the efficiency of combination method between ultrasonic and adsorption process to remove zinc, Zn and nickel, Ni from fertilizer factory wastewater. The parameters analyzed in this research are amounts of adsorbent in solutions from 0.5 g to 2.9 g of tea waste, different ultrasonic temperature from 40° C to 80° C and different sonication time from 5 minute to 29 minutes. After several experiment and analysis of results, it is found that the optimum condition to remove Zn and Ni from 100 ml wastewater is at 24 minute sonication time and 75°C ultrasonic temperature for 2.5 g amount of adsorbent which can remove about 79% of zinc and 71% of nickel. According to the result, the method of ultrasonic assisted by adsorption process to remove heavy metal from industrial wastewater can be use effectively because it can reduce energy, time and cost of treatment.

The hospital wastewater may contaminate with micro-organisms, heavy metal, toxic chemicals and radioactive elements. In fact, the hospital wastewater is generating hybrid wastewater at the same moment domestic, industrial and effluents of care and medical research. Throughout this research our main concern is to remove targeted heavy metal that found to contain in the hospital wastewater, Pb and Ni. The wastewater will be treated using the ultrasonic technology assisted with several of leaching solution, HNO3, citrate and EDTA. Ultrasonic process has been found as reliable solution which applies intense, high frequency sound to liquids, producing intimate mixing and powerful chemical and physical reactions. The best performance of these leaching solutions (HNO3, citrate and EDTA) will be studied through the main parameter such as type of solution, sonication time and concentration of the solution. The sample obtained from the hospital is filtered and spike with amount of targeted heavy metal prior to ultrasonic process and AAS analysis. As the result, the best time to remove Pb is 3 minutes while 6 minutes for Ni removal. The suitable concentration to remove Pb is 0.06 M while 0.1 M for Ni. The percentage removal is 54% for Pb and 35.93% for Ni.

This chapter discusses heavy metals in industrial wastewater effluents and potential agro wastes from which nanoparticles of activated carbon for industrial wastewater purification could be generated. The transformation of agro wastes nanoparticles into activated carbons via calcination and their applications for heavy metals removal from industrial wastewater via adsorption were examined. Various characterization techniques to study the effects of calcination on structural, morphological and textural properties of activated carbon prepared from agro waste nanoparticles were also discussed. Various isotherm, kinetics, mechanistic and thermodynamics models to investigate the adsorptive nature of the process were presented. Error functions and algorithms for both the linear and non-linear isotherm models regression to affirm their fitness for prediction were presented. Lastly, proposed adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals removal from industrial wastewater using activated carbons from nanoparticles of agro wastes were presented.

Nickel and chromium are toxic metals and they are used extensively in numerous industries such as textiles, beverages, steel, pulp and paper, and electroplating. Their industrial effluent contains large measures of non-biodegradable traces that are harmful to flora, fauna, and human beings. Although there are a number of methodologies used for treatment of metal-containing industrial effluents and waste water, there is not one up to now that offers a high capacity removal rate at an economical cost. This book presents the results and data from research and adsorption experiments carried out on the removal of nickel and chromium (as well as other metals) from aqueous solutions using modified silica sand. The data resulting from detailed kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies, show that the removal capacity is increased so the treated water has a higher quality or purity. It also demonstrates that the extraction of metals is achieved at a significant lower cost because the treated water adsorption is a simple process with less maintenance, and because silica is a nontoxic natural material widely available in all parts of the world.

The metal reservoirs in the earth have declined due to society’s needs and due to uncontrolled mining activities. Therefore, the idea to recover metals from waste streams has emerged. In this thesis, cost competitive technologies such as adsorption using agro-wastes and precipitation using an inverse fluidized bed (IFB) reactor were investigated, with special emphasis on the recovery of base metals. Groundnut shell showed good potential for metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) removal. From artificial neural network modeling, the performance of the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) was found to be strongly pH dependent; the removal efficiency of Cu and Zn in the IFB at pH 5.0 was >97%. Electronic waste is a good candidate as secondary metal resource. The recovery of Cu from computer printed circuited boards (PCBs) using biogenic sulfide precipitation was investigated as well. Using this technology, Cu could be recovered at ~0.48 g Cu/g PCBs.
