Book excerpt: These proceedings summarize the highlights from the Conference on Remote Sensing for Transportation--Products and Results: Foundations for the Future. This was the second in a series of three conferences on the subject of remote sensing in transportation. The objectives of this conference were: (1) Enhancing communication between the transportation and remote sensing communities; (2) Developing a common understanding of current successful applications of remote sensing to transportation; and (3) Crafting strategies for implementation of remote sensing in transportation. More than 150 people attended the conference, with representation from state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, local government, the U.S. Department of Transportation, other federal agencies, universities, the private sector, and other organizations. The proceedings consist of a Foreward and Introduction to the Proceedings, comments on the structure of the 2001 conference and proceedings, summaries of the 7 sessions, and the following appendices: (A) Summary of Roundtable for States and Metropolitan Planning Organizations; (B) Conference Workshop Information; (C) Listing of Technology Buffet Displays; (D) Abbreviations and Acronyms; and (E) Conference Participants.

Book excerpt: Soon after starting work on the development of a methodology for national trans portation planning in Venezuela, we realized the importance of an integrated management process for such an effort. We also realized the absence in the literature of specific guidelines on how to manage and conduct a transportation planning effort. The literature on the subject of national transportation planning is predominantly theoretical and technical in nature. To a large extent, the absence of literature on management and broad-based methodological approaches reflects the limited and ad hoc nature of the experience in national transportation planning. This book is an attempt to fill that gap. The main objective of the book is to show one way by which a methodology for national transportation planning can be integrated into a process management framework. It reports on the experience that the authors had in the Venezuelan case, as well as in earlier national planning efforts. The book is not intended as a theoretical discussion of planning. Instead, it adopts a particular theoretical stand and proceeds on that basis to develop a program for applying a specific methodology. The intention is to leave as much of the details and elaborations of that methodology to the user. This is motivated by two considerations. The first is a pragmatic attempt to limit the scope of the book.
Book Synopsis Remote Sensing Change Analysis Methodology to Support Traffic Monitoring Programs by : Reginald R. Souleyrette
Download or read book Remote Sensing Change Analysis Methodology to Support Traffic Monitoring Programs written by Reginald R. Souleyrette and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE) issued a report in July 2003, based on a sample study of the application of remote sensed image land use change detection to the methodology of traffic monitoring in Blackhawk County, Iowa. In summary, the results indicated a strong correlation and a statistically significant regression coefficient between the identification of built-up land use change areas from remote sensed data and corresponding changes in traffic patterns, expressed as vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Based on these results, the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) requested that CTRE expand the study area to five counties in the southwest quadrant of the state. These counties are scheduled for traffic counts in 2004, and the Iowa DOT desired the data to 1) evaluate the current methodology used to place the devices; 2) potentially influence the placement of traffic counting devices in areas of high built-up land use change; and 3) determine if opportunities exist to reduce the frequency and/or density of monitoring activity in lower trafficked rural areas of the state. This project is focused on the practical application of built-up land use change data for placement of traffic count data recording devices in five southwest Iowa counties.
