Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Baltic Fleet of 1855 The following reminiscences have been compiled from a Journal kept by me while serving in the Baltic Fleet, supplemented by recollections which had not, and never can fade from my memory. While mixing in other scenes, during thirty years of military service in various parts of the world, the very existence of the Journal (which was carefully preserved by my dear mother) had almost passed from my mind. Yet, in perusing it, to recast the following summary, most of the events recorded came back with surprising clearness, not merely in the main, but even in detail - proving, indeed, that youthful impressions are stamped on the memory with a permanence withheld from those of riper years. The personal incidents here given are faithfully recorded; while those more hearsay are of a most trustworthy kind. For, being in the Flagship, I always had information at first hand, through my good friend Paymaster Munday, Secretary to the Admiral; as well as access to official charts, plans, and lists, and so had the best knowledge alike of our own and the French Squadron, as of Russian ships, forts, and fortresses.
