Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Public Men: With Speeches and Addresses The Reminiscences and other articles in this book were written (with a few exceptions) between the years 1872 and 1876, when South Carolina was under Radical and Negro rule, before the State was "redeemed, regenerated and disenthralled" through the influence and by the efforts of General Wade Hampton. Hence the frequent allusions of the writer to the lamentable condition of South Carolina. The articles selected by the wife (unassisted) are of historic value, interesting to the surviving actors in the troublous times of Nullification, Secession and Disunion, and giving information to many of the present generation who are unacquainted with the history of that period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama for Thirty Years IT is deemed necessary to state, that the Author was requested by a number of friends who knew his long connection with the Government, to prepare Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama, as a contribution to the history of the times, which could not fail to be of general interest. Prompted by this sug gestion, he ventured upon the task, believing that it was a duty he owed his fellow-citizens to lay before them the results of his observation and experience during a period which embraced the most distinguished actors on the public stage, and the most stirring events which have occurred since the State passed from its Terri torial condition. His memory has thus been exercised to gather up and preserve, in the form of narrative and description, many things which otherwise would have perished, as no man living, except himself, had the same opportunities to acquire, by personal contact with men, the minute knowledge embodied in this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Memories: Personal Reminiscences In presenting this volume to the public, it is but just to the memory of the author, as well as due to many of his friends, that a word of explanation should be given of its apparent desultoriness. The original plan of "Men and Memories" was laid out in 1891, and the first article written, at my own urgent insistence. Mr. Young's personal acquaintance with eminent men, his interesting experiences and reminiscences seemed too valuable to be lost; and after much persuasion, he began the series with the article upon "Lincoln." His original scheme included "Recollections of Charles Sumner," - "Wendell Phillips," - "James G. Blaine and his Times," - longer papers upon "Horace Greeley," - "The Cary Sisters" and "Tribune Days," - "Edwin Booth and the American Stage during the past 35 years." Together with "Reminiscences of 'English Friends, '" - among whom were "Robert Browning," - "Wilkie Collins," - "George Eliot," - "William Black," - "Miss Mu-lock" (Mrs. Craik), - and "Henry Irving and His Influence upon Acting." Mr. Young's original plan was never carried out. Many duties pressed, and while he was still making notes upon those who had passed on, other friends, near at hand, were falling from the ranks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Casket of Reminiscences The author of the Reminiscences contained in this volume has little to say in regard to them by way of proem. They were written to amuse a few hours of the summer and autumn of the present year, and appeared almost daily in the columns of the Washington Chronicle precisely as they were originally thrown off from his pen. Though very sensible of their deficiencies in point of literary finish, he has not judged it expedient to modify them in any essential particular; and he will, indeed, be highly gratified if they shall now he read by those into whose hands they may chance to fall with as much interest as they seemed originally to awaken. He has no apology to make for certain rather unkind strictures indulged in regard to several individuals upon whose character and conduct he has undertaken to remark. He has chosen to speak the unvarnished truth, both as to men and things; and he is quite well satisfied that, sooner or later, all considerate and impartial men will come to the conclusion that in doing so he is not justly subject to censure. Should there he those who shall choose to join issue with him as to facts herein narrated they will now have it in their power to do so under circumstances altogether convenient to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ernest Wende: A Memoir In spite of like political and personal requests in his day, Dr. Wende rigidly adhered to the Civil Service Law, and took the first man on the list, regardless of politics. It is true, the 2bad preference clause of the Civil Service Act once compelled Dr. Wende to take the second man, a vet eran, with the result that he had to discharge him for good cause within two years. Still his present successor in office, and all those under him, when let alone, so thoroughly appreciate the soundness of the organization first given the office by Dr. Wende, that they, in turn, are solicitous to maintain, and even increase, its reputation for efficiency, a thing that can only be done by rigidly excluding all personal and political considerations from its administra tion; for such considerations have no place when the health of people is concerned. Grant, Vol. 1 of 2 In preparing these volumes for the public, I have entered upon the task with the sincere desire to avoid doing injustice to any one, whether on the National or Confederate side, other than the un avoidable injustice of not making mention often where special mention is due. There must be many errors of omission in this work, because the subject is too large to be treated of in two volumes in such way as to do justice to all the officers and men en gaged. There were thousands of instances, during the rebellion. Of individual, company, regimental and brigade deeds of heroism which deserve special men tion and are not here alluded to. The troops en gaged in them will have to look to the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of those deeds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.
