Book Synopsis The Carlyle Encyclopedia by : Mark Cumming
Download or read book The Carlyle Encyclopedia written by Mark Cumming and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Carlyle Encyclopedia focuses primarily on Thomas Carlyle. It reflects the range of his interests and resists stereotyped impression of who he was and what he believed. It covers Carlyle's entire life, without privileging any particular work or period, and locates Carlyle in his time and place, in the context of a rich and challenging age. The Carlyle Encyclopedia also gives a balanced assessment of Jane Welsh Carlyle, which avoids either belittling her or overestimating her achievement. It avoids the reductive and contradictory stereotypes of her which were offered by early biographers of Thomas Carlyle and offers instead a study of her varied friendships and her trenchant observations on contemporary life." "The Carlyle Encyclopedia will interest a variety of readers who concern themselves with literature, social history, the history of ideas, Victorian culture, and Scottish studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Relocated Memories by : Marguérite Corporaal
Download or read book Relocated Memories written by Marguérite Corporaal and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Famine radically transformed Ireland; nearly one million people of the rural countryside died, and the eviction of farmers led to massive emigration. The Famine encouraged anti-English, nationalist sentiments, and this trauma is seen as pivotal in the development of an Irish anticolonial consciousness and in the identity formation of transatlantic Irish communities. In Relocated Memories, Corporaal challenges the persistent assumption that the first decades after the Great Irish Famine were marked by a pervasive silence on the catastrophe. Discussing works by well-known authors such as William Carleton and Anthony Trollope as well as more obscure texts by, among others, Dillon O’Brien and Susanna Meredith, Corporaal charts the reconfigurations of memory in fiction across generations and national borders.

Book Synopsis The Event and Its Terrors by : Stuart John McLean
Download or read book The Event and Its Terrors written by Stuart John McLean and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Event and its Terrors undertakes a critical reimagining of one of the major events of Irish historythe Great Famine of the 1840sand of its subsequent legacies. Drawing on a wide range of sources, past and present, it considers the emergence of the Famine as an object of historical knowledge and controversy with reference both to the experience of modernity and to the production of academic and nationalist histories in colonial and post-independence Ireland. In doing so, it explores the possibility of alternative modes of engagement with the past via contemporary eyewitness accounts, oral histories, literature, folklore, and present-day commemorative events.
