A West Point graduate, Doubleday was at Fort Sumter when it was attacked, signaling the beginning of the Civil War. He aimed the first Union gun fired in defense of the fort. A staunch abolitionist, he served in numerous campaigns throughout the Civil War, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1863. After the war, he attained the rank of colonel before retiring from active service in December 1873. Doubleday is most famously remembered for being credited with inventing the game of baseball in 1839 at Cooperstown, New York, but it is thought that this is almost certainly untrue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abner Doubleday (1819-1893), was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War. He fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war, and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was his finest hour, but his relief by Maj. Gen. George G. Meade caused lasting enmity between the two men. In San Francisco, California, after the war, he obtained a patent on the cable car railway that still runs there. In his final years in New Jersey, he was a prominent member and later president of the Theosophical Society. His most lasting claim to fame is the popular myth that he invented baseball, which has been debunked by almost all sports historians, although Doubleday himself never made such a claim. Doubleday published two important works on the Civil War: Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie (1876), and Chancellorsville and Gettysburg (1882), the latter being a volume of the series Campaigns of the Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The summer of 1860 found me stationed at the head-quarters of the First United States Artillery at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina. I was captain of Company E, and second in command to Brevet Colonel John L. Gardner, who was lieutenant-colonel of the regiment. The regimental band and Captain Truman Seymour's company (H) also formed part of the garrison. The other forts were unoccupied, except by the ordnance-sergeants in charge.Charleston, at this period, was far from being a pleasant place for a loyal man. Almost every public assemblage was tinctured with treasonable sentiments, and toasts against the flag were always warmly applauded. As early as July there was much talk of secession, accompanied with constant drilling, and threats of taking the forts as soon as a separation should occur. To the South Carolinians Fort Moultrie was almost a sacred spot, endeared by many precious historical associations; for the ancestors of most of the principal families had fought there in the Revolutionary War behind their hastily improvised ramparts of palmetto logs, and had gained a glorious victory over the British fleet in its first attempt to enter the harbor and capture the city.

Book excerpt: To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Diversion Books is publishing seminal works of the era: stories told by the men and women who led, who fought, and who lived in an America that had come apart at the seams. Most know Abner Doubleday as the man who “invented” baseball. But before he dedicated himself to the national pastime, he was a captain of artillery in the Union Army. He fired the first shot to defend Fort Sumter. This highly readable account of his time at war brings keen observation to the brutal conflict, revealing both a grueling account of war and the often thoughtful, contemplative men embroiled in the conflict. Doubleday’s account of a secret evacuation will put readers on the edge of their seats, but it is his reflective tone that invites attention, and multiple readings.

Book excerpt: On April 12, 1861, the long-simmering tensions between the American North and South exploded as Southern troops in the seceding state of South Carolina fired on the Federal forces at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. The battle of Fort Sumter marked the outbreak of Civil War in the United States. The attack provoked outrage in the North, consolidated support for the newly inaugurated President Lincoln, and fueled the onset of the war that would consume and reshape the country. In this concise narrative, Wesley Moody explores the long history of tensions that lead to the events at Fort Sumter, the details of the crisis and battle, the impact of Fort Sumter on the unfolding Civil War, and the battle's place in historical memory. Supplemented by primary documents including newspaper coverage, first-person accounts, letters, and government documents, and supported by a companion website, this book provides students with a nuanced understanding of both the long-term and immediate origins of the American Civil War.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie in 1860-61 Now that the prejudices and bitter partisan feeling of the past are subsiding, it seems a fitting time to record the facts and incidents connected with the first conflict of the Rebellion. Of the eleven officers who took part in the events herein narrated, but four now survive. Before the hastening years shall have partially obliterated many circumstances from my memory, and while there is still an opportunity for conference and friendly criticism, I desire to make, from letters, memoranda, and documents in my possession, a statement which will embody my own recollections of the turbulent days of 1860 and 1861. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abner Doubleday: His Life and Times is a full-length biography of a man who lingered on the fringes of history for nearly 150 years. His story is one of a man who was remembered for a myth, not his actual deeds. This story sheds light on the man who was as complex as any modern person; a man who was far ahead of his time. When General John F. Reynolds fell at the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg, it was Doubleday who took on the command of the troops during the first day. As the Union retreated at the end of the day and the two armies flowed through the streets, Abner was seen in the midst of the wounded and stragglers as he tried to learn more details of the action. He rode rapidly back to the front. His horse was covered with foam and the flushed face of the General bespoke the tremendous strain under which he was laboring. A subordinate officer described Abner, He handles his troops under fire with the same composure he would exhibit at a review or parade. (He is) a man of unquestioned bravery, cool and clear sighted on the battlefield.

The North wanted to restore Sumter to its rightful place in the Union and close the vital Confederate supply port of Charleston while the South needed to defend its birthplace and keep the supplies flowing--thus making Fort Sumter one of the most fervently attacked and most tenaciously defended pieces of real estate in the United or Confederate States of America throughout four years of war.
