March, 1852, six Oblate Fathers and one Lay Brother, accompanied by four Nuns of the Incarnate Word, two Ursuline Sisters, four Brothers of Mary, and eighteen Seminarians, bade adieu to "La Belle France" and went aboard the sailing vessel "La Belle Assise," at Havre, en route for Texas. "My native land adieu! adieul I cannot always stay with you, stay with you." The wharf is crowded, thousands are there, in expectation of an unwonted spectacle. The saintly Bishop Odin, in his episcopal robes, blesses the band of missionaries from the pier and then goes back to Paris, in the interest of his diocese. The ship leaves its moorings, the cannon booms, the Ave Maris Stella is sung by thirty-five voices, "Adieu ma belle France." The sacrifice is made joyfully, "Hilarem datorem diligit Deus." Some sing, "Partons pour la Syrie." I saw tears trickling down the cheeks of a tender-hearted seminarian, as he cast a last glance on the coast of France disappearing on the horizon. "Adieu, mother." Fifty-two days between the immensity of the firmament and the immensity of the ocean taught us to appreciate the fixity of mother earth. Once and again she importuned me to gather it together into a connected recital. Pressing duties of life allowed me no other time. I finished them in 1904. I have only two motives in printing them. But the story of the Rangers along the Mexican border between Texas statehood and the onset of the Civil War has been largely overlooked—until now. This engaging history pulls readers back to a chaotic time along the lower Rio Grande in the mid-nineteenth century. Texas Devils challenges the time-honored image of “good guys in white hats” to reveal the more complicated and sobering reality behind the Ranger Myth. Michael L. Collins demonstrates that, rather than bringing peace to the region, the Texas Rangers contributed to the violence and were often brutal in their injustices against Spanish-speaking inhabitants, who dubbed them los diablos Tejanos—the Texas devils. Bryan's account of the Jubilee services held at Shanghai, November, 1897, is added as an appendix, a fitting crown to the work so beautifully set out in this story. Seldom does a book so sweep heart and mind, its reading giving a kind of transfiguration experience. It is thrilling to think how, from its reading, missionaries will be born and how the enrichment of thought and feeling will come both in the home and in the churches.
