Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Literary Life It must not, however, be concealed, that the task of composition has been at times both of difficult and delicate execution. On the one hand, there has been such an excess of matter, or abundance of materials (from which to make a judicious selection), as to perplex me in the extreme; for a literary course of some thirty-five years is not one of ordinary occurrence. On the other hand, I have had to struggle with difficulties so as to avoid giving offence by the introduction of some names or circumstances in preference to others; and, above all, have my anxieties prevailed in bringing forward, by way of illustration, or evidence, the testimonies, in the form of letters, of the Living and the Dead. But, if my heart have not greatly deceived me, I am willing to believe that I have, in no one instance, wounded the feelings of the former, or tarnished the memories of the latter. The suppression of such evidence would have been childish, and unworthy of an individual who has mixed so long and so largely in the world as myself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Literary and Clerical Life, Vol. 1 of 2 I began these notes some years ago, before the pleasant rush of recent autobiographical literature had fairly set in. The work is somewhat auto biographical, but not a biography; I have gone as little as might be into merely personal details, which in my own case, except to a few, might prove extremely uninteresting, but have gathered up some of my impressions and experiences. Intending to make it a home work, I have excluded various chapters on foreign travel in various parts of France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, and Spain. I believe that any book that seeks honestly and fairly to set forth a personal experience may hope to have some measure of use and interest. One of my fair friends has informed me, in the dialect of the day, that I have hardly been. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections, Personal and Literary His youth showed again how much more inborn tendency has to do with one's life than any exter nal forces, such as guardianship, means, and what we call education. The thrush takes to the bough, wheresoever hatched and fledged. Many waters cannot quench genius, neither can the floods drown it. The story of Dickens's boyhood, as told by him self, is not more pathetic, nor is its outcome more beautiful, than the story of Richard Henry Stod dard's experiences, his orphanage, his few years' meagre schooling, his work as a boy in all sorts of shifting occupations, the attempt to make a learned blacksmith of him, his final apprenticeship to iron moulding, at which he worked on the East Side from his eighteenth to his twenty-first year. As Dr. Griswold put it, he began to mould his thoughts into the symmetry of verse while he moulded the molten metal into shapes of grace. Stoddard, how ever, afterward said that a knowledge of foundries was not one of the learned doctor's strong points. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years in Paris: Being Some Recollections of a Literary Life Although, in the writing of it, this book has grown to bulk which much surpasses that which was proposed at the outset, and although at all times what precept was kept in mind by which the severe Boileau proclaims it the great art of authorship to leave certain things unsaid, I am yet conscious as I read its pages over again that many people have been left unnamed who ought to have been named, and that many things have not been told which ought to have been told. I begin now to understand why it is that the writers of memoirs usually require several volumes for their narratives, and I can appreciate the truth of those words of the poet Baudelaire which Alphonse Daudet used often to quote in my hearing, "J'ai plus de souvenirs que si j'avais mille ans." The purpose of this explanatory note is to pay a collective tribute to those still living and to the memory of those who are dead, whose names are not recorded in friendship in these pages. To have written about all the distinguished people who by the privilege of their companionship and the graciousness of their hospitality have embellished the twenty years of my life in Paris would indeed have necessitated a record of many volumes. An almost Spartan simplicity and temperance, an austere morality, and, with all the Puritanic reserve of their habits, a warm affection and great benevolence towards their fellow creatures, made this small circle of highly educated literary people a remarkable and admirable one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Literary and Clerical Life, Vol. 2 of 2 The condition of health which I have mentioned, very much determined my course for all future years. Except for very occasional years in London, I have always lived south of London, principally on the coast, or very near it, contriving, however, to be in London a longer or shorter time each year. I became by means of my experience, in a small way, a kind of authority on climatology, and indeed contributed a chapter on the subject to a. Medical work. I know pretty well all the south coast of England, from Broadstairs to Penzance, and beyond to the Scilly Isles. I have stayed, more or less. "Memoirs" is a word which, as commonly used, includes books of very various kinds, ranging from St. Augustine's Confessions to the gossip of Lady Dorothy Nevill. Such books, however, have all one family likeness. They all of them represent life as seen by the writers from a personal point of view; and in this sense it is to the family of Memoirs that the present book belongs. But the incidents or aspects of life which a book of Memoirs describes represent something more than themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Friends Being Literary Recollections of Other Days My book of other Days, containing Chronicles and Memories of Actors, has been received by the public with gratifying favor, and that favor has impelled me to act on a suggestion, coming from several sources, that I should write a companion book, containing Chronicles and Memories of Authors. The result is this book of old Famnns. I was introduced into the companionship of authors early in life, having published my first book, - which led to acquaintance with some of them, - in 1854, and I have had friendly intercourse with many of them, extending over a period of more than fifty years. Some of my recollections of that intercourse are here expressed, with all the kind ness that is consistent with truth, and perhaps my readers will find a little pleasure in rambling with me along the grass-grown pathways of the Past, where the idols of my youthful enthusiasm and the comrades of my pen remain unchanged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable blend of memoir and criticism, James Wood, noted contributor to the New Yorker, has written a master class on the connections between fiction and life. He argues that, of all the arts, fiction has a unique ability to describe the shape of our lives and to rescue the texture of those lives from death and historical oblivion. The act of reading is understood here as the most sacred and personal of activities, and there are brilliant discussions of individual works - among others, Chekhov's story "The Kiss," W.G. Sebald's The Emigrants, and Penelope Fitzgerald's The Blue Flower. Wood reveals his own intimate relationship with the written word: we see the development of a provincial boy growing up in a charged Christian environment, the secret joy of his childhood reading, the links he makes between reading and blasphemy, or between literature and music. The final section discusses fiction in the context of exile and homelessness. The Nearest Thing to LifeÊis not simply a brief, tightly argued book by a man commonly regarded as our finest living critic - it is also an exhilarating personal account that reflects on, and embodies, the fruitful conspiracy between reader and writer (and critic), and asks us to reconsider everything that is at stake when we read and write fiction.
