Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN NYRB CLASSICS ORIGINAL Virginia Woolf called Max Beerbohm “the prince” of essayists, F. W. Dupee praised his “whim of iron” and “cleverness amounting to genius,” while Beerbohm himself noted that “only the insane take themselves quite seriously.” From his precocious debut as a dandy in 1890s Oxford until he put his pen aside in the aftermath of World War II, Beerbohm was recognized as an incomparable observer of modern life and an essayist whose voice was always and only his own. Here Phillip Lopate, one of the finest essayists of our day, has selected the finest of Beerbohm’s essays. Whether writing about the vogue for Russian writers, laughter and philosophy, dandies, or George Bernard Shaw, Beerbohm is as unpredictable as he is unfailingly witty and wise. As Lopate writes, “Today . . . it becomes all the more necessary to ponder how Beerbohm performed the delicate operation of displaying so much personality without lapsing into sticky confession.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is thirty-two years now since BohunLynch wrote his little book entitled Max Beerbohm in Perspective. As its subject was not quite fifty then and at the height of his creative power, the book naturally lacked the air of finality that one usually associates with studies of this kind. But even apart from the in evitable limitation imposed by the time of writing Bohun Lynch's book leaves much to be desired. It is an informal, sympathetic and well-written appreciation of certain selected aspects ofBeerbohm's art, rather than a careful and systematic analysis of all the then available facts. This is especially evident from the author's virtual neglect of such topics as Beerbohm's literary ancestry, his technique, and his place as a critic, and from the scant treatment accorded to his personality and to some of his works. Bibliographical documentation about the writings and caricatures of Sir Max Beerbohm is equally inadequate. The first important contribution in this field was made by A. E. Gallatin, whose Sir Max Beerbohm: Bibliographical Notes appeared in 1944. A revised version of part of this book, by A. E. Gallatin and L. M. Oliver, was serialized in the Harvard Library Bulletin in 1951, and published in 1952 as No. ill of the Soho Bibliographies under the title A Bibliography of the Works of Max Beerbohm.

Book excerpt: Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm (1872-1956) was an English parodist and caricaturist. His first book, The Works of Max Beerbohm, was published in 1896. Having been interviewed by George Bernard Shaw himself, in 1898 he followed Shaw as drama critic for the Saturday Review, on whose staff he remained until 1910. From 1935 onwards, he was an occasional radio broadcaster, talking about cars and carriages and music halls for the BBC. His wit is shown often enough in his caricatures but his letters contain a carefully blended humour-a gentle admonishing of the excesses of the day-whilst remaining firmly tongue in cheek. Beerbohm's best known works are: Yet Again (1909), A Christmas Garland (1912), a parody of literary styles, and Seven Men (1919), which includes Enoch Soames, the tale of a poet who makes a deal with the devil to find out how posterity will remember him. In 1911 he wrote Zuleika Dobson, or, An Oxford Love Story, his only novel. He also wrote And Even Now (1920). Contains: Dandies and Dandies, A Good Prince, 1880, King George the Fourth, The Pervasion of Rouge, Poor Romeo!, and Diminuendo.

Book excerpt: From 1880 to 1956, when John Osborne transformed the British theater world with Look Back in Anger, British playwrights made numerous lasting contributions and provided a foundation for the innovations of dramatists during the latter half of the 20th century. This reference profiles the life and work of some 40 British playwrights active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many of whom are also known for their work as novelists and poets. Included are figures such as W. H. Auden, Max Beerbohm, Noel Coward, T. S. Eliot, John Galsworthy, Graham Greene, D. H. Lawrence, W. Somerset Maugham, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde. Each entry provides a biographical overview; a list of major plays and summaries of their critical reception; a list of minor plays, adaptations, and productions; an assessment of the playwright's career; and archival and bibliographical information. Included in this reference book are alphabetically arranged entries for some 40 British playwrights active from 1880 through 1956. Entries are written by expert contributors, with each entry providing a biographical overview; a list of major plays, premieres, and significant revivals, along with a summary of the critical reception of these works; a listing of additional plays, adaptations, and productions; an assessment of the playwright's career and contributions, with reference to published evaluations in magazines, journals, dissertations, and books; a listing of locations housing unpublished archival material, if available; a selected bibliography of the dramatist's published plays and of essays and articles by the playwright on aspects of the theater; a selected bibliography of secondary sources; and, when available, a listing of previously published bibliographies on the playwright.
