Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My son, Mark Ostrander, was a vibrant and popular young man. In Osage, Iowa, high school, he was on the honor roll, and lettered in track, wrestling, and football. He was Homecoming King, loved to ski, and played drums in the Osage Precisionnaires Drum and Bugle Corp. He won many dance contests and went to Hollywood to compete on Deney Terrio's "Dance Fever" when he was just 18. In college, he was named to the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Dean's List and named to the cast for the production of M-A-S-H. He danced in the Community Theatre Production of '"Oklahoma." In May, he graduated with honors from NIACC when he received his Associate Degree in Science. In October of the following year, he enrolled in the University of Iowa to pursue Dentistry. When Mark was 21, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and his journey through life became a disaster at every turn. In and out of mental hospitals, he persevered and managed to pop back up with each setback. In 1988, at age 28, he graduated from Control Data Institute in Dallas, Texas, with a 96.1 GPA and received his Computer Technology degree. He had such high aspirations, but with every step forward there were always two steps back. At age 34, Mark was left disabled after he attempted to take his life. The 22 years that followed were filled with amazing determination and dedication by Mark, his family, and his friends as he recovered from his injuries. After spending many months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities in Texas, his options for a place to live were reduced to nursing homes. Outrageous errors, oversights and neglect were widespread in the nursing homes where Mark resided. The absence of training among nursing home personnel was not unusual and the staff members' horrendous lack of judgment led to unsafe circumstances. Poor communication between administration and staff resulted in dangerous situations and unsanitary practices promoted the spread of disease. In order to prevent mistakes from being made and to avert negligent care, it was extremely important that I closely monitored Mark's stay in each nursing home. He was often exposed to illegal practices like "dumping," unwarranted discharge, and retaliation. I learned what to expect from the nursing homes and wasn't afraid to ask questions. Mark's phenomenal determination to succeed and my constant vigilance were important factors which helped Mark achieve many steps toward his recovery. Mark loved his music and his computer, and toward the end of his rehabilitation, he had made great strides in his physical and mental recovery, despite having had to tolerate the many nursing home nightmares.

Book excerpt: Micronesians often liken the Pacific War to a typhoon, one that swept away their former lives and brought dramatic changes to their understandings of the world and their places in it. Whether they spent the war in bomb shelters, in sweet potato fields under the guns of Japanese soldiers, or in their homes on atolls sheltered from the war, Micronesians who survived those years know that their peoples passed through a major historical transformation. Yet Pacific War histories scarcely mention the Islanders across whose lands and seas the fighting waged. Memories of War sets out to the fill that historical gap by presenting the missing voices of Micronesians and by viewing those years from their perspectives. The focus is on Micronesian remembrances—the ritual commemorations, features of the landscape, stories, dances, and songs that keep their memories of the conflict alive. The inclusion of numerous and extensive interviews and songs is an important feature of this book, allowing Micronesians to speak for themselves about their experiences. In addition, they also reveal distinctively Micronesian cultural memories of war. Memories of War preserves powerful and poignant memories for Micronesians; it also demonstrates to students of history and culture the extent to which cultural practices and values shape the remembrance of personal experience.

When Jim hears a story of a hidden valley, way up north, where people say a miracle happened long ago, he wonders if this place could bring Mark a miracle too. But what draws Jim and many others to the valley is much more than a legend. An unknown force has brought them there for a reason. This inspiring story is about three sick children in need of a miracle, and the lengths to which loved ones will go to help them. It is a reminder that hope, faith, and prayer have power no matter who you are, from the poorest to the richest.

Book excerpt: All that glitters isn't gold . . . sometimes it's love. In the lush, sun-bright splendor of southern California, three women, three friends, search for the courage to dream, to trust, to love. But there are dark secrets and hidden betrayals that must first be overcome. A terrible accident has stolen Allison Fitzgerald’s dreams, and it has taught her that life is too precious—and too fragile—to waste. So when she meets a man who evokes a passion in her that she has never known before, she surrenders to his love without questioning his secretive past. Gifted and beautiful actress Winter Carlyle has learned, from painful experience, that the people she loves always leave her, and that it is far too dangerous to care, and that she is only liked when she is pretending to be someone she is not. Still, she is willing to risk everything for the doctor who sees beyond the pretense . . . But is he willing to risk everything for her? Emily Rousseau only feels safe, only feels free, when she is behind the lens of her camera, safe and free from the men who want her, and want to hurt her. The portraits she takes are works of art, and there is one man, unlike any other man she has ever known, who sees not only the talent in her work, but the loveliness in her. But can she accept the love, and face the demons, that will free her from her past? Praise for the novels of Katherine Stone: “Remarkably romantic and thoroughly enchanting.”—Rendezvous on Pearl Moon “Poignant . . . Cass is an intrepid heroine, but it is Chase who wins our hearts when he refuses to allow Cass’s seeming betrayal to stop him from protecting his beloved.” —Midwest Book Review on Bed of Roses “Fairytale elements mix with those of a present day romance for . . . thoroughly enjoyable results.”—Kirkus Reviews on Rainbows “With this tightly woven, suspenseful plot, peopled with memorable characters, Stone has produced another surefire hit.”—Booklist on Imagine Love “Sweeping drama . . . Her most emotionally charged and intricate story of love yet.”—Romantic Times on Imagine Love “Alluring . . . Fascinating . . . Book excerpt: “Men will die upon dogma, but not fall victim to conclusion.” —John Henry Newman In this exciting autobiography, Titch Laudrigan narrates his well-traveled and adventurous life and how he found that life is a constantly moving path. As the son of a career Air Force officer, Laudrigan grew up accustomed to moving from place to place and back again. Constantly relocating and always losing or making new friends was a norm in his young life. He enjoyed the travel and the thrill of living overseas, but he often wished to just be away from his abusive, dysfunctional family. When he was finally old enough to move, he did—and far away he went. From herding specialized food animals in the highlands of Central Mexico to backpacking in Europe to schooling in Paris and Britain to working as a Navy journalist, and more, Laudrigan has had a life well-lived, and he shares all in this memoir. A narrative of things seen and done, Titch Remembers gives insight into a rare life, indeed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sporadic Memories is a novel about a lifestyle that needs to be read about. Within the first few pages you will realize there has been a loss, it is not sad though; the narrator expresses with great enthusiasm the life they lived, which makes it nice during the times when it becomes difficult to read. By the first few pages I hope you can hear the narrator has been alive for a long time, explaining the way it is written? There is no distinction between the characters’ genders, which offers a personal experience for the reader. The part that remembers the time they gave bracelets to each other brings about another way of joining together in marriage ... following how their courtship developed, and the apple tree that is depicted throughout the novel using its fruit in traditional family recipes. It gets sad for a bit after this, but notice that it gets sad because there is so much more to why the one lost is worth writing about. It is partly a love story. You know for sure it is when you get to the parts about the piano played and songs written ... you should at first read to the first song. The memory at the exhibition and recalling times in the rain and snow are next. They traveled a lot together and you will read of a place if you read a little past the description of the surroundings of their home. If you read to the first birthday mentioned; you will find a recipe worth trying, a poem worth reading, and fireworks. The narrator is a playwright, so there is a play that is broken down throughout the novel ... it is a difficult read, but it is important in showing how the two brought their work together, and what positive influences they made upon those they met. Things are repeated to show how important positive repetition is, which helps to move past pain while remembering the passion. This novel is full of passion, carried throughout the life they had for each other, their work, and their friends ... you might want to read through first until you hear about their friends. This novel completes the story as the pages turn; putting certain pages together will bring the memories in order. It is an easy read. It is written poetically, which gives it justice. It begins the way it ends ... Sporadic Memories is a novel about a lifestyle that needs to be read about.
