Book excerpt: Bills Life story was his desire for his children and grandchildren to know him and even more than that, he wanted them to know Jesus as their personal savior. He studied the Bible and was very concerned about the liberal teachings coming from new translations and our governments lack of respect of Gods Word. Bill never knew his father because his father was killed, as he tells in his story, at the very young age of two. Although Bill was always around during the lives of his children, there was much of his younger days not spoken of. He loved reading of his heritage and had a desire to know his father and grandfathers. He wanted his children and grandchildren to know him and what his childhood was like. Maybe he was driven by his desire to know more about his own daddy or just wanted his loved ones to know where he came from. Whatever the reason, it was very important to Bill to be remembered. He wanted his grandchildren to know he was a singer and decided to record some CDs to be left behind. Wanting to be remembered and also wanting Jesus to be remembered, he named the gospel recording Remembering Him, and he recorded an old country classic, popular in our younger days, The w-RIGHT WORLD. As you read Bills MyLife, notice the time and datesit will tell you even more. If you read and listen closely, you will find a love story or maybe two or maybe even threeor is there more? Michael Carlton has a lot to say about needing the negative to know the positive. Pray for wisdom and understanding Bill wrote an original story of his life, which included many more names and happenings or memories special to him. It was too much for a short book; therefore, Bill condensed this book. It has not been altered in any way. At one time, while Bill was writing, sitting at the head of our dining-room table, which served as his office, he called to me (I was in the kitchen next room), What about the time [Ill not say what], how or what should I say? After a quiet thought and a sincere prayer and a deep breath, I answered, What is, is. Its your book. Write what you want. I turned and walked away, thinking, Whats done is done and cant be undone. I cant change the past. Thank God for his forgiveness, praise His Holy Name Jesus Christ and His shed blood. I appreciate you so much, thank you, Lord! Bills wife for 51 years, Helen

Book excerpt: From American master Richard Ford, a memoir: his first work of nonfiction, a stirring narrative of memory and parental love How is it that we come to consider our parents as people with rich and intense lives that include but also exclude us? Richard Ford’s parents—Edna, a feisty, pretty Catholic-school girl with a difficult past; and Parker, a sweet-natured, soft-spoken traveling salesman—were rural Arkansans born at the turn of the twentieth century. Married in 1928, they lived “alone together” on the road, traveling throughout the South. Eventually they had one child, born late, in 1944. For Ford, the questions of what his parents dreamed of, how they loved each other and loved him become a striking portrait of American life in the mid-century. Between Them is his vivid image of where his life began and where his parents’ lives found their greatest satisfaction. Bringing his celebrated candor, wit, and intelligence to this most intimate and mysterious of landscapes—our parents’ lives—the award-winning storyteller and creator of the iconic Frank Bascombe delivers an unforgettable exploration of memory, intimacy, and love.

Book excerpt: This is a story of the author's self-induced journey into and through hell on his way to finding and remembering a way "home" while stumbling upon the ultimate love which is unconditional in form. While preparing for this journey of remembering, he found himself conscious enough at times to realize and save the "gold nuggets" of spirituality he stumbled upon, hoping one day to share these with others. While the gold nuggets are spiritual in nature, it's a raw variety or a "street spirituality." Being a non-conformist and rebel at heart, he had to find some type of spirituality that would work for him and get him back on the path of remembering what he is here for in the human form. This is a brutally honest (and sometimes graphic) retelling of that journey of recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Mead sets down the sincere choosing of God which should result in closing with Christ and being genuinely converted. His text is Ecclesiastes 12:1, “Remember your Creator now in the days of your youth.” He directed the sermons to the youth of the church, but they are by no means linked only to them, and will make older sinners blush as well as younger ones. He explains that the two great duties of the Christian life are to cease to do evil, and to learn to do well. No man can be good that does not cease to be evil. In the words of the preacher from Ecclesiastes, he shows that this exhortation is to take up a very concerning duty, backed with a threefold argument. In the duty, first, the act, which is to “remember.” Secondly, the object to be remembered, “your Creator.” And, thirdly, the time when he must be remembered, “now.” Sincere converts to the Christian faith should wisely improve this present life, and carefully provide for a better one to come. The one that is truly faithful in one will in some measure be conscious in both, and both are pointed at in Mead’s text. The one that in the days of his youth remembers his Creator as he ought, rightly improves the present life and wisely provides for that which is to come. In doing so, he unites in his practice those duties that God has joined together in the precept, “remember your Creator now in the days of your youth.” This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: The "unputdownable" (Dave Eggers, National Book award finalist) story of the most infamous American con man you've never heard of: James Strang, self-proclaimed divine king of earth, heaven, and an island in Lake Michigan, "perfect for fans of The Devil in the White City" (Kirkus) A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Longlisted for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist for the Midland Authors Annual Literary Award A Michigan Notable Book A CrimeReads Best True Crime Book of the Year "A masterpiece." —Nathaniel Philbrick In the summer of 1843, James Strang, a charismatic young lawyer and avowed atheist, vanished from a rural town in New York. Months later he reappeared on the Midwestern frontier and converted to a burgeoning religious movement known as Mormonism. In the wake of the murder of the sect's leader, Joseph Smith, Strang unveiled a letter purportedly from the prophet naming him successor, and persuaded hundreds of fellow converts to follow him to an island in Lake Michigan, where he declared himself a divine king. From this stronghold he controlled a fourth of the state of Michigan, establishing a pirate colony where he practiced plural marriage and perpetrated thefts, corruption, and frauds of all kinds. Eventually, having run afoul of powerful enemies, including the American president, Strang was assassinated, an event that was frontpage news across the country. The King of Confidence tells this fascinating but largely forgotten story. Centering his narrative on this charlatan's turbulent twelve years in power, Miles Harvey gets to the root of a timeless American original: the Confidence Man. Full of adventure, bad behavior, and insight into a crucial period of antebellum history, The King of Confidence brings us a compulsively readable account of one of the country's boldest con men and the boisterous era that allowed him to thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An album-by-album celebration of the life and music of Mac Miller through oral histories, intimate reflections, and critical examinations of his enduring work. “One of my most vivid memories of him is the way he would look at you while he was playing you a song. He tried to look you right in the eyes to see how you were feeling about it.” —Will Kalson, friend and first manager Following Mac Miller’s tragic passing in 2018, Donna-Claire Chesman dedicated a year to chronicling his work through the unique lens of her relationship to the music and Mac’s singular relationship to his fans. Like many who’d been following him since he’d started releasing mixtapes at eighteen years old, she felt as if she’d come of age alongside the rapidly evolving artist, with his music being crucial to her personal development. “I want people to remember his humanity as they’re listening to the music, to realize how much bravery and courage it takes to be that honest, be that self-aware, and be that real about things going on internally. He let us witness that entire journey. He never hid that.” —Kehlani, friend and musician. The project evolved to include intimate interviews with many of Mac’s closest friends and collaborators, from his Most Dope Family in Pittsburgh to the producers and musicians who assisted him in making his everlasting music, including Big Jerm, Rex Arrow, Wiz Khalifa, Benjy Grinberg, Just Blaze, Josh Berg, Syd, Thundercat, and more. These voices, along with the author’s commentary, provide a vivid and poignant portrait of this astonishing artist—one who had just released a series of increasingly complex albums, demonstrating what a musical force he was and how heartbreaking it was to lose him. “As I’m reading the lyrics, it’s crazy. It’s him telling us that he hopes we can always respect him. I feel like this is a message from him, spiritually. A lot of the time, his music was like little letters and messages to his friends, family, and people he loved, to remind them of who he really was.” —Quentin Cuff, best friend and tour manager
