Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the History, Structure, and Theories of the Apostles Creed The first act of the Christian life is, "I believe." In this act, the soul awakes to the consciousness of a new life. It enters on a new creation; old things are passed away, behold all things are become new. It passes from death to life. It is delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God's dear Son. It is pardoned, justified, has peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, has access into this grace wherein it stands, and rejoices in hope of the glory of God. The love of God is poured out within it by the Holy Ghost. And now begins that marvellous inward history which, through sore conflicts, and "groanings which cannot be uttered," finds its true consummation at last, in "the manifestation of the sons of God." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: Its Origin, Its Purpose, and Its Historical Interpretation It will be seen that the notes deal largely with the Old Roman Symbol and not with the present text of the creed. This is due not only to the greater relative importance of the former, but also to the fact that my own inde pendent investigations have been confined to questions connected with the Older symbol, and I have not cared to burden the notes with second hand results. The conclusions touching the origin and history of the present text of the creed which are given in the latter part of the lecture are based wholly upon the investigations of others, especially Caspari and Kattenbusch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: In the Light of Modern Discussion I rejoice to believe that we are all getting nearer to Christ and therefore nearer to one another. In using the ancient creeds and seeking to understand them we need not be thought unbrotherly or divisive the Church has a common and precious inheritance. I am glad to adopt the words of the Unitarian, Dr E. H. Sears. In his book The Heart of Christ, he says: Those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as the supreme authority and guide, and enter more into his all-revealing mind, are making progress toward the harmonizing truths which he represents. However wide apart they may be at the start their progress is ever on converging lines. Essential truth becomes more and more central and manifest, the'non-essential falls away to its subordinate place, and orthodox and unorthodox move alike toward a higher and higher unity. It is not that one sect is making a conquest of the others, but Jesus Christ is making a conquest of us all There is no rea son then to be afraid to know what the Church believes. The addresses on the Apostles' Creed were given in Great St. Mary's, Cambridge, during Lent, 1919; the development of thought is essentially the same, but identity does not extend further. Book excerpt: "Exposition of the Apostles' Creed" by James Dodds While the disciples had Jesus with them, there was no occasion for a formal summary of the doctrines which His followers were called to accept and to maintain. However, after his death, written documentation was needed to help ensure apostles and disciples had proper rules to live by. This book explores a part of Christian history that's all too often untalked about.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed It is difficult to write a short history of the Apostles' Creed because, in its various stages of development, the Creed is bound up with the whole history of the Church from Apostolic times. To use one ancient interpretation of its Latin name, symbolum, it has been the banner carried at the head of the victorious army of Christ. As regimental banners display emblazoned the names of the great battles in which the regiment has won distinction, so do the creeds of particular Churches sum up in phrases added to the original form the history of dire confiicts in which Truth has painfully battled with Error. It is one thing to give the skeleton record of a series of campaigns with the dates and the names of commanders on both sides, and quite another to narrate the story of endurance and bravery which was shown on the toilsome march, and through night battles, and in the suffering of hardships, no less than in the clash of battle and the hour of victory. Just so we may in the compass of a few pages put together a record of skeleton creed-forms, with approximate dates and a few appropriate reflections. But this would be to leave the heart of the subject untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
