Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarkable Biography: Or the Peculiarities and Eccentricities of the Human Character Displayed At the time ofhis birth, his father who was an able workman at his business, was employed by Messrs. Winter and Kaye, of No. 14, Ludgate-hill, and could earn a decent and comfortable livelihood but, having a large family, his means were insufficient to 'pro cure education for all, consequently little Andrew received his only instructions at the hand of his revered parent; and he blesses Providence that he has been taught to read and write, since it has afforded him many opportunities of contemplating the Divine goodness, in the protection and prolongation of his existence, and enables him at this advanced period of life, to pay his grateful adorations to the, Creator of all things. He Speaks of his mother, as a good and affectionate wife, and a tender and indulgent parent, whose death he had to regret on the 14th of April, 1800, when she Was sixty-two years of age, and the subject of our memoir was thirty'; this was one of the first serious troubles of poor Andrew's life, which was follov'ved in five years after, by the dissolution of his father, in the seventy-seventh year of his age, on the 26th of May, 1805. Thus deprived of his natural protectors, who. With all his decrepitude and debilities, equally, if not more than equally, fostered and beloved him; bereft of the tender and indulgent hands of his anxious and affectionate parents. The Afterlife of Enclosure examines three canonical British writers—Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy—as narrators of this history, the long duration and diffuse effects of which required new literary forms to capture the lived experience of enclosure and its aftermath. This study boldly reconceives the realist novel, not as an outdated artifact, but as witness to the material and environmental dispossession of enclosure—and bearer of utopian energies. These writers reinvented a commons committed to the collective nature of the social world. Illuminating the common at the heart of the novel—from common characters to commonplace events—Carolyn Lesjak reveals an experimental figuration of the lost commons, once a defining feature of the British landscape and political imaginary. In the face of privatization, climate change, new enclosures, and the other forms of slow violence unfolding globally today, this book looks back to a literature of historical trauma and locates within it a radical path forward.
