Since then, these shows have become important platforms where ideas about Islam and religious authority in Pakistan are developed and argued. In Religious Television and Pious Authority in Pakistan, Taha Kazi reveals how these talk shows mediate changes in power, belief, and practice. She also identifies the sacrifices and compromises that religious scholars feel compelled to make in order to ensure their presence on television. These scholars, of varying doctrinal and educational backgrounds—including madrasa-educated scholars and self-taught celebrity preachers—are given screen time to debate and issue religious edicts on the authenticity and contemporary application of Islamic concepts and practices. In response, viewers are sometimes allowed to call in live with questions. Kazi maintains that these featured debates inspire viewers to reevaluate the status of scholarly edicts, thereby fragmenting religious authority. By exploring how programming decisions inadvertently affect viewer engagements with Islam, Religious Television and Pious Authority in Pakistan looks beyond the revivalist impact of religious media and highlights the prominence of religious talk shows in disrupting expectations about faith.

The institutional structures of white supremacy—slavery, Jim Crow laws, convict leasing, and mass incarceration—require a commonsense belief that black people lack the moral and intellectual capacities of white people. It is through this lens of belief that racial exclusions have been justified and reproduced in the United States. Televised Redemption argues that African American religious media has long played a key role in humanizing the race by unabashedly claiming that blacks are endowed by God with the same gifts of goodness and reason as whites—if not more, thereby legitimizing black Americans’ rights to citizenship. If racism is a form of perception, then religious media has not only altered how others perceive blacks, but has also altered how blacks perceive themselves. Televised Redemption argues that black religious media has provided black Americans with new conceptual and practical tools for how to be in the world, and changed how black people are made intelligible and recognizable as moral citizens. In order to make these claims to black racial equality, this media has encouraged dispositional changes in adherents that were at times empowering and at other times repressive. From Christian televangelism to Muslim periodicals to Hebrew Israelite radio, Televised Redemption explores the complicated but critical redemptive history of African American religious media.

The authors represented in this collection are professors of religion, sociology, and his-tory, and are all part of a new wave of scholars with fresh orientations toward the study of southern religion. The essays cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging chronologically from John Boles's work on white-black relations in antebellum biracial churches to William Martin's treatment of what he calls the electronic church of the 1980s - the television-audience congregations who follow evangelists such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. The book encompasses a wide range of points of view, socioeconomic classes, and denominations. In addition to C. Eric Lincoln's essay on the history of the black church in America, there are J. Wayne Flynt's on the social gospel among southern Protestants from 1890 to 1920, David Edwin Harrell's on plain-folk religion in the South from 1835 to 1920, Randall M. Gen writes on the sectional splits in the major denominations prior to the Civil War, and in his introduction and conclusion to the collection Samuel S.
