Book Synopsis Equal in Monastic Profession by : Penelope D. Johnson
Download or read book Equal in Monastic Profession written by Penelope D. Johnson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the manner in which medieval nuns lived, Penelope Johnson challenges facile stereotypes of nuns living passively under monastic rule, finding instead that collectively they were empowered by their communal privileges and status to think and act without many of the subordinate attitudes of secular women. In the words of one abbess comparing nuns with monks, they were "different as to their sex but equal in their monastic profession." Johnson researched more than two dozen nunneries in northern France from the eleventh century through the thirteenth century, balancing a qualitative reading of medieval monastic documents with a quantitative analysis of a lengthy thirteenth-century visitation record which allows an important comparison of nuns and monks. A fascinating look at the world of medieval spirituality, this work enriches our understanding of women's role in premodern Europe and in church history.
Book Synopsis Rites of Religious Profession by : Edward Foley
Download or read book Rites of Religious Profession written by Edward Foley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rites of religious profession mark the initiation of women and men into the various religious communities of the church. These public liturgies of the church manifest and shape the relation of these women and men to the church and to the world. How are the rites of religious profession to be understood, prepared, and celebrated? Edward Foley offers an overview of their history and a reflection on the theology of these rites. He then shows how to approach these liturgies and bring them to life as celebrations of the church. We learn how much the rites themselves tell us about the formation of religious women and men, and how and the place these communities have in the church. This volume also contains the entire official text of the Rite of Religious Profession. This includes all revisions to this text made through 1988.

Book Synopsis Christian Librarianship by : Gregory A. Smith
Download or read book Christian Librarianship written by Gregory A. Smith and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the current library literature assumes that professional library service is necessarily neutral-detached from the librarian's philosophical or religious views. By contrast, contributors to this collection assert that librarianship is best practiced as an outworking of spiritual conviction. Accordingly, they discuss principles for integrating Christian faith and librarianship within various contexts, and reflect on professional issues from biblical and theological perspectives. This text will prove beneficial to Christians working in all types of libraries, whether religious or secular. This compilation of 16 essays is divided into two main parts, the first on theory and the second on practice. The first part includes chapters such as A Rationale for Integrating Christian Faith and Librarianship, The Master We Serve: The Call of the Christian Librarian to the Secular Workplace; and The Impact of the Christian Faith on Library Service. Chapters in the second part include Library Encounters Culture, A Christian Approach to Intellectual Freedom in Libraries and Keeping Sunday Special in the Contemporary Workplace Culture. Contributors include William Fraher Abernathy, Rod Badams, Donald G. Davis, Jr., John Allen Delivuk, Kenneth D. Gill, Graham Hedges, D. Elizabeth Irish, James R. Johnson, Roger W. Phillips, Gregory A. Smith, Stanford Terhune, John B. Trotti, John Mark Tucker and Geoff Warren.

Book excerpt: In 1967, seven Muslim physicians arrived in the United States from various countriesIndia, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt, and Afghanistanfor advanced training. They found themselves in a new culture with few Muslims around. They formed an organization where they shared common concerns, supported each other, and maintained their identity, faith, and culture. Thus began the journey of the Islamic Medical Association (IMA). Serving Faith, Profession, and Community, by author Faroque Ahmad Khan, captures the essence of that journey, including how this was accomplished, what some of the challenges were, and who the key individuals involved in organizing and laying the foundation of IMA (now called the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA)) were. Describing the major contributions American Muslim physicians have made toward the health and well-being of Americans, Serving Faith, Profession, and Community chronicles the organizations first fifty years and sets goals and plans for the future.
Book Synopsis Religion as a Profession by : Hans Schilderman
Download or read book Religion as a Profession written by Hans Schilderman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a conceptual and empirical study of the religious profession. It takes as its point of departure professionalisation theory that is discussed and applied to a profession in mainstream religion, in this case Dutch Catholic ministry. The book entails a well-documented empirical study of attitudes of clergy and lay personnel in the Dutch Roman-Catholic Church regarding the pastoral profession. Their attitudes towards church authority, apostolicity, sacramental efficacy, accession to the office, and spiritual role are described extensively. The research clarifies the extent to which these religious attitudes act as a positive or negative motif to engage in policies that are aimed at a professional development of the occupation. The book offers an excellent insight into basic characteristics of a religious profession.
