Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descriptive and evaluative annotations of more than 1,000 books and articles in religious education and related fields are featured in this guide. Since religious education draws necessary guidance from other disciplines, pertinent literature is canvassed from theology, philosophy, and history of education; behavioral studies of religion and education; and multidisciplinary treatments. Special care has been taken to include materials that represent the interfaith and international aspects of the field. A bibliographical essay that interprets and evaluates positions and trends is included in each category. A resource for scholars, students, historians, and researchers. Educational theory is explored as it has influenced and provided insights for religious education. The vast literature in the theory and practice of religious education is dealt with in several categories. The section on theory explores basic issues, important positions, and major figures. The section on administration deals with planning, organization, management, and supervision. Program, curriculum, and method are considered together because they so often overlap in the literature. Since religion is a persistent concern in schools and in institutions of higher education, special sections are devoted to the issues involved and the proposals put forward. A final section covers reference works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five doctoral students from around the world recently set out to forge a new path toward a theology of mission. As they blazed a new trail, they discovered the footprints of God--evidence that God was their trial guide. Charles Van Engen led this group of mission practitioners, pastors, teachers, and mission executives as they set out to discover answers to important questions, such as "What is theology of mission?" and "What is missiology?" The team used a new approach to answer these questions, employing narrative to integrate personal story, community stories, cultural stories, and biblical stories. Each writer brings his or her own unique context to bear on these important questions through personal story and by highlighting the work of a major missiologist who has impacted their life and work. By drawing from personal stories, the authors show how human factors affect missiology. All of the chapters are set within a unique theological framework created by Charles Van Engen that focuses on mission of the way, mission in the way, and mission on the way. This framework reveals that mission must be "of the way" (Christ-centered), "in the way" (happening among the peoples and cultures of the world), and "on the way" (moving forward over time through God's people as they anticipate Christ's present and coming kingdom). If you are concerned about connecting the Bible, theology, and ministry with the complexity and variety of contexts facing Christians today, then you will want to join this journey to discover the footprints of God. As Van Engen says, you will be encouraged to "think theologically about mission, and missiologically about theology."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion has had notable and renewed prominence in contemporary public and political life. Religious questions have also been freshly examined in philosophy and theology, the natural sciences, the social sciences, psychology, phenomenology, politics and the arts. These fields reflect complex, multi-disciplinary understandings of religion, some hostile, some accommodating. For religious education this has all contributed to its own international renaissance. Religious education, in ensuring it is contemporary, shares with these fields the same criticality, the same distance between the study of religion and the religious life. Yet what are the grounds of this modern religious education? Through a systematic historical and contemporary cross-disciplinary analysis, answering this question is the ambitious task of the book. Chapters include: philosophy, theology and religious education the natural sciences and religious education the social sciences and religious education psychology, spirituality and religious education phenomenology and religious education the politics of religious education the aesthetics of religious education. The central problem of all modern religious education remains this: what are the grounds of religious education when religious education is no longer grounded in the religious life, in the life of the holy? Although this primarily appears to be an epistemological problem, it soon becomes a moral and existential one. The book will be of key interest to teachers, theorists and researchers working in religious education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education: A Comprehensive Text Book This Text Book is the outcome of a wide demand for a complete Handbook, covering fully all phases of Religious Education in the Church. There was no such book hitherto extant. It took a library of some thirty or more volumes to cover the necessary field, as laid down in the Standard Course for teacher-training set forth by the Joint Commission on Sunday Schools. Such reading was overwhelm ing, unnecessary (for often but a few pages or precepts of a writer applied directly to Religious Education), and costly in the purchase of so many volumes. The author prepared a smaller book, Sunday School Teaching, a compilation of authorities covering 175 pages, in 1903, which has gone through three large editions in five years, being the Guide Book for the training of several thousand Sunday School teachers, of all religious bodies. Even day school educators found it suggestive and illuminat ing. It will be continued in the market. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning in a Musical Key examines the multidimensional problem of the relationship between music and theological education. Lisa Hess argues that, in a delightful and baffling way, musical learning has the potential to significantly alter and inform our conception of the nature and process of theological learning. In exploring this exciting intersection of musical learning and theological training, Hess asks two probing questions. First, What does learning from music in a performative mode require? Classical modes of theological education often founder on a dichotomy between theologically musical and educational discourses. It is extremely difficult for many to see how the perceivedly nonmusical learn from music. Is musicality a universally human potential? In exploring this question Hess turns to the music-learning theory of Edwin Gordon, which explores music's unique mode of teaching/learning, its primarily aural-oral mode. This challenge leads to the study's second question: How does a theologian, in the disciplinary sense, integrate a performative mode into critical discourse? Tracking the critical movements of this problem, Hess provides an inherited, transformational logic as a feasible path for integrating a performative mode into multidimensional learning. This approach emerges as a distinctly relational, embodied, multidimensional, and non-correlational performative-mode theology that breaks new ground in the contemporary theological landscape. As an implicitly trinitarian method, rooted in the relationality of God, this non-correlational method offers a practical theological contribution to the discipline of Christian spirituality, newly claimed here as a discipline of transformative teaching/learning through the highly contextualized and self-implicated scholar into relationally formed communities, and ultimately into the world.
