Book excerpt: L'objectif de cette thèse est de démêler les rapports entre culture, religion et politique dans le cas des Églises camerounaises de la région lyonnaise. Après avoir resitué les populations d'origine qui ont fourni l'émigration camerounaise vers Lyon (Ière partie), l'auteur examine les grands moments de l'évangélisation du Cameroun (IIe partie). L'arrivée de la Mission Baptiste de Londres pendant la période coloniale allemande en 1845, avec Alfred Saker, fut le point de départ de l'une des tentatives les plus intensive et les plus variée de l évangélisation de l'Afrique. Sont ici retracées l'histoire et les tribulations des différentes Missions (celle de Bâle, des Presbytériens américains, des Pères Pallotins, etc.), puis de leur relève après la guerre de 1914 et le changement de colonisateur. Une large part est accordée à la montée en puissance des Églises « Natives » et à l'émergence des Églises camerounaises indépendantes ainsi qu'aux rapports entre Églises, administration coloniale et nationalisme. La IIIe partie explore les paradoxes des pratiques religieuses des Camerounais de Lyon : en dépit de la position ambiguë de leurs Églises par rapport au pouvoir politique, les fidèles y retrouvent une ambiance familière qui les rattache au pays, un espace de retrouvailles et d'entraide communautaire, un cadre rituel qui leur permet d'organiser, à leur façon, les événements familiaux et les turbulences de la modernité. Book excerpt: C’est à Bonamikengué, dans la banlieue de Douala, qu’est née la première communauté chrétienne du Cameroun, appelée Bethel. C’est dans cette localité qu’est également né Samuel D. Johnson, l’auteur de cet ouvrage qui traite de la naissance et du développement des communautés baptistes au Cameroun. Dans cette étude, à la fois historique et théologique, l’auteur nous présente les acteurs qui ont oeuvré au processus de formation de cette Église. D’abord les quatre sociétés missionnaires venues d’Europe : la Baptist Missionary Society (BMS) de Londres ; la Mission de Bâle (MB) ; la Mission Baptiste de Berlin (MBB) et la Société des Missions Évangéliques de Paris (SMEP). À cet apport missionnaire de l’extérieur s’est ajouté celui, décisif, des Camerounais eux-mêmes en vue de l’évangélisation de leur pays. L’histoire étudiée commence en 1841 et s’achève avec la mise en place de l’Église baptiste autochtone, la Native Baptist Church (NBC), en 1949. Entre ces deux dates s’est opéré un travail qui a mêlé missionnaires et autochtones et qualifié par Samuel D. Johnson de « joint-venture ». Cette rencontre est examinée avec soin dans les périodes précoloniale et coloniale. L’auteur, écrit Théodor Ahrens dans la préface, se demande quelles étaient les motivations qui ont conduit les sociétés missionnaires de Grande-Bretagne, d’Allemagne, de Suisse et de France ainsi que leurs missionnaires à aller au Cameroun ? De quel milieu venaient ces missionnaires ? Quels intérêts les guidaient ? Les stratégies d’évangélisation des sociétés missionnaires et des missionnaires blancs sont examinées en détail à la lumière des différents fonds d’archives. L’ouvrage cherche à montrer ce qu’a signifié le christianisme pour ceux qui se le sont approprié comme pour ceux qui l’ont rejeté. Quels étaient dans ces processus divers et éclectiques les leaders d’opinion et les décideurs ? Quelles étaient leurs raisons de s’associer au christianisme et comment l’ont-ils compris et interprété ? Quels bouleversements le christianisme a-t-il produits chez ceux qui l’ont adopté et comment les autochtones ont-ils essayé de s’en accommoder ?

Book excerpt: Following the launching of jihad against Sarkin Gobir and other Hausa chiefs by Uthman dan Fodio, a renowned Muslim reformer, Yola became one of the focal points for Uthman's Movement south of the Lake Chad region. The leader was Modibbo Adama (1809-1847) and the emirate he formed was called Adamawa. The study analyses the factors which came into play in the creation and maintenance of the emirate out of a vast array of segmented units of authority. By the middle of the 19th century, Europeans started visiting the region in a general drive to abolish slave trade from its sources and substitute it with legitimate trade. Not contented with mere trade, European expeditions competed with one another to colonize the region for their respective governments. Lamido Zubeiru (1890-1901) refused to submit, but the British, French and Germans through European diplomatic channels partitioned the emirate in 1893 and 1894. The threat of Mahdism and the consolidation of Rabeh's power over Bornu and neighbouring kingdoms provided the Europeans additional reasons for waging war against the emirate and to overthrow almost a century of Fulani hegemony. The principal sources are oral tradition preserved in local chronicles and contemporary reports of European travellers, soldiers, administrators and Royal Niger Company officials.

Many returned home with stories of distant lands and at least some of the objects they collected during their journeys. And those who did not travel eagerly acquired wondrous materials that arrived from faraway places. Objects traveled various routes—personal, imperial, missionary, or trade—and moved not only across space but also across cultures. Histories of the early modern global culture of collecting have focused for the most part on European Wunderkammern, or "cabinets of curiosities." But the passion for acquiring unfamiliar items rippled across many lands. The court in Java marveled at, collected, and displayed myriad goods brought through its halls. African princes traded captured members of other African groups so they could get the newest kinds of cloth produced in Europe. Native Americans sought colored glass beads made in Europe, often trading them to other indigenous groups. Items changed hands and crossed cultural boundaries frequently, often gaining new and valuable meanings in the process. An object that might have seemed mundane in some cultures could become a target of veneration in another. The fourteen essays in Collecting Across Cultures represent work by an international group of historians, art historians, and historians of science. Each author explores a specific aspect of the cross-cultural history of collecting and display from the dawn of the sixteenth century to the early decades of the nineteenth century. As the essays attest, an examination of early modern collecting in cross-cultural contexts sheds light on the creative and complicated ways in which objects in collections served to create knowledge—some factual, some fictional—about distant peoples in an increasingly transnational world.
