Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relief Work Among the Aegean Islands As a certain amount of work has already been done at Mitylene, I would recommend that the first group to go out be sent to Chios. As regards serving the smaller islands' mentioned in my report, the first four of these could be served from Mitylene, Oinousai from the island of Chios, and Ikaria from the island of Samos, provided we have our own boat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report, Department of Civilian Relief: Exclusive of the Districts of the Aegean Islands and Eastern Macedonia Acting under this resolution, Major Oakley was placed in charge of the Commission's activities in Macedonia and I was similarly placed in 'charge of the work in the Aegean islands. Owing to lack of sufficient personnel and supplies, we were unable to take up an extended work in Epirus; but certain relief work was undertaken there, principally in connection with the hospitals, and this will be described in Major Black's report on Hospitals in Greece. An account of all the activities of the Commission in Eastern Macedonia, irrespective of the Departments underwhose supervision they were carried out, first under the direction of Major Oakley and later, on Major Oakley's departure, under that of Major Dewing, will be found in the final report on Macedonian and Bulgarian stations, to which I refer you; likewise the work in the Aegean islands, under my leadership, has been fully covered in my final report on the island stations of that district. I will therefore confine myself, in this report, to giving an account of the work of this Department in the other parts of Greece. The work of the Department of Civilian. Relief was, naturally, incomparably greater in Eastern Macedonia and the Aegean islands than in all the rest of Greece together; but the account would be incomplete if our very considerable activities in the three largest cities of Greece, Athens, Salonica, and Patras, and in the other centers where systematic relief was extended, should go unrecorded. On February when Major Barnes was obliged to return to the United States, I took over, at your request, the direction of the Department of Civilian Relief, as well as continuing in charge of the Commission's activities in the Aegean islands. For fuller information the reader is referred to such comprehensive works as Ross's Reisen auf den griechischen Inseln, Pashley's Travels in Crete, Conze's Reise auf den Inseln des Thrakischen Meeres, and Mr. Bent's The Cyclades. These (with the exception of the last-named, which was not published when I visited the central islands) were the constant companions of my journeys, and I take this opportunity of acknowledging the service which they have rendered me, both as a source of information in travelling, and as an aid in compiling this book. The three journeys which are here described were undertaken at considerable intervals, but no great changes have taken place in those regions since the first was made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Aegean Intrique If these stories should serve as an incitement to every pater-familias actual or potential to address to his children an Apologia pro Vita Sud 1914-1918, otherwise called An Account of what Daddy did in the Great War they would set, I confess, a pernicious example: the world itself could not contain the books that should be written, or, what is worse, the public would not stomach them. And so, if I venture upon a narrative of some of my doings, my justification is that my experiences have been largely peculiar to myself and not a replica of those which tens of thousands of others can recount, and my work that of a comparatively free agent rather than of one unit in a controlled and disciplined mass. For, let me avow it at once, my part in the war cannot be deemed, in the common acceptance, warlike: I have not been under fire; I have not encountered submarine or mine; I have not so much as seen an enemy in uniform and at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aegean Days But, if many of these pages seem steeped in literary or historic lore, it may be pleaded that the Aegean atmosphere IS so saturated with the memories of a great Past that one cannot escape them if he would. More than that, the solid monuments of every age challenge you at every turn and the stately figures of legend and history enter into your life for the time being well - nigh as really as do the men and women with whom you talk and traffic. To under stand the living Greek one must know old Greek life' and know it well - well enough, at least, not to insist on too much of survival. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When in 1821, the Greeks rose in violent revolution against the rule of the Ottoman Turks, waves of sympathy spread across Western Europe and the United States. More than a thousand volunteers set out to fight for the cause. The Philhellenes, whether they set out to recreate the Athens of Pericles, start a new crusade, or make money out of a war, all felt that Greece had unique claim on the sympathy of the world. As Byron wrote, 'I dreamed that Greece might Still be Free'; and he died at Missolonghi trying to translate that dream into reality. William St Clair's meticulously researched and highly readable account of their aspirations and experiences was hailed as definitive when it was first published. Long out of print, it remains the standard account of the Philhellenic movement and essential reading for any students of the Greek War of Independence, Byron, and European Romanticism. Its relevance to more modern ethnic and religious conflicts is becoming increasingly appreciated by scholars worldwide. This new and revised edition includes a new Introduction by Roderick Beaton, an updated Bibliography and many new illustrations.
