Book excerpt: The large service interruptions of power supply in the transmission system have significant impact on modern society. The aim of the power system engineers is to prevent and mitigate such events with optimal decisions in design, planning, operation and maintenance. Due to the rapid growth in the power demand and competitive power market scenario, the transmission and distribution systems are frequently being operated under heavily loaded conditions. This tends to make failure of components more frequent in the power system necessitating large downtime to repair or replace the equipment. A majority of the service interruptions are happening due to lack of proper planning and operation of power system. Therefore, complete reliability assessment in generation, transmission and distribution systems is needed at the planning stage. The reliability assessment in smart grids is very much beneficial to the power operator and reduces the risk of grid failure due to failure of major components in power systems. This chapter is confined to composite power system reliability assessment. The composite power system combines both the generation and transmission systems' adequacy. The generation system in the composite power system includes both conventional and renewable sources. The composite power system reliability assessment is quite difficult due to the large number of equipment, interconnected network topology and uncertainties in generation capacity. The reliability assessment concentrates mainly on the use of probabilistic states of components in generation and transmission systems to evaluate the overall reliability. This analysis will result in a cost-effective system configuration to provide continuous power supply to the consumers at reasonable cost. The reliability level of the system is measured by the defined indices. One of these indices is the probability of average power availability at load bus. This reliability assessment mainly focuses on development of methods to evaluate the probability of average power availability at load buses for a specified system configuration. This chapter discusses the two main techniques called node elimination method and modified minimal cut set method.

Book excerpt: The last two decades have brought about significant changes in the resource planning environment of electric power utilities throughout the world. The conventional generation technologies that have been the backbone of every electric utility i.e., coal, hydro, nuclear, oil and natural gas, are being re-examined to address environmental concerns and resource utilization. The research described in this thesis focuses on the adequacy and economic assessment of non-utility generation (NUG) and demand-side management (DSM) initiatives within a typical power system. The main objective was to examine and extend the ability of the contingency enumeration approach to evaluate the economic reliability benefits of incorporating NUG and DSM options separately or jointly in composite system adequacy assessment. Two test systems were employed in the evaluations. The studies undertaken in this thesis demonstrate the need for accurate load model representations which clearly reflect the mix of customer sectors at each bus. Chronological hourly load curves were developed for each load bus in the test systems recognizing the individual load profiles of the customers. The adequacy and economic implications of demand-side management initiatives in the test systems were examined at each load point in the composite generation and transmission configuration. This thesis illustrates the development of techniques by which system planners and operators can incorporate reliability cost/worth assessment power system applications. Focus is placed in the thesis on the utilization of reliability cost/worth concepts in integrated resource planning in the form of NUG additions and DSM initiatives. Methods for the joint implementation of NUG and DSM options in a composite power system are presented and examples from the studies conducted are used to illustrate the procedures. Studies are presented which illustrate the impacts of NUG additions and DSM initiatives on the test system planning reserve ma.

Book excerpt: Electric power networks are complex systems because of their geographic spread and the consequent need for interconnections and integration of different components such as generators, transformers, lines, reactors, relays, and loads. Therefore, power utilities seek to ensure an acceptable degree of reliability in planning and operations, and accordingly, need information on component outages while satisfying the growing demand in order to ensure the availability of the system and prevent downtimes. Power systems of today are facing major challenges because of the rapid increase in penetration of energy resources (ERs) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEV). This thesis focuses on the evaluation of composite system reliability using direct probabilistic analysis techniques. The research presents the mathematical foundations, evaluation procedures, and reliability and risk indices associated with composite power system reliability evaluation using the minimal cut set calculations. The concept of minimal cut sets is applied to evaluate two sets of reliability and risk indices, system indices and nodal indices. System indices are essential for system planners and operators to determine the likelihood of interruption of supply, while nodal indices provide useful information on significant load points. The performance of the system under outage condition of generators, transmission lines, or both, is examined by conducting an appropriate power flow study. An optimal power flow (OPF) model is solved to find the system and nodal minimal cut sets and the associated indices. The thesis presents a novel composite system reliability based planning for ERs with clustering techniques based approaches to determine the optimal location, size and year of installation of ERs in the system. The K-means clustering and Fuzzy C-means clustering techniques are applied to the set of reliability indices, Load Not Served per Interruption (LNSI), which are determined using nodal minimal cut sets. The nodal minimal cut sets are obtained using an OPF based approach. Once the optimal sizes and locations of ERs are obtained, the earliest year of their penetration into the system is determined using an adequacy check algorithm. The thesis further presents a novel method to detect the critical components of composite power systems under steady-state conditions and short-term operations in order to help planners make economic decisions on new investments in generation capacities and transmission lines upgrades, and also to help operators maintain the delivery of electricity during system failure and disturbance events. Each component is ranked based on minimal cut set outage probability and the consequent loss of load arising from the outages of components belonging to a minimal cut set. Finally, the thesis presents a novel framework to evaluate the impact of PEV charging loads on composite power system reliability. A Smart-OPF model combined with a minimum cut set approach is proposed to evaluate the system reliability indices. Demand response (DR) is included in the proposed procedure and its impact on system reliability indices is studied. The procedure to determine the critical components of the power system in the presence of PEV loads and DR is also proposed.

Book excerpt: The analysis of experimental data resulting from some underlying random process is a fundamental part of most scientific research. Probability Theory and Statistics have been developed as flexible tools for this analyis, and have been applied successfully in various fields such as Biology, Economics, Engineering, Medicine or Psychology. However, traditional techniques in Probability and Statistics were devised to model only a singe source of uncertainty, namely randomness. In many real-life problems randomness arises in conjunction with other sources, making the development of additional "softening" approaches essential. This book is a collection of papers presented at the 2nd International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS’2004) held in Oviedo, providing a comprehensive overview of the innovative new research taking place within this emerging field.

Book excerpt: Amid a plethora of challenges, technological advances in science and engineering are inadvertently affecting an increased spectrum of today’s modern life. Yet for all supplied products and services provided, robustness of processes, methods, and techniques is regarded as a major player in promoting safety. This book on systems reliability, which equally includes maintenance-related policies, presents fundamental reliability concepts that are applied in a number of industrial cases. Furthermore, to alleviate potential cost and time-specific bottlenecks, software engineering and systems engineering incorporate approximation models, also referred to as meta-processes, or surrogate models to reproduce a predefined set of problems aimed at enhancing safety, while minimizing detrimental outcomes to society and the environment.

The reliability evaluation tool used is a computer program called MECORE (Monte Carlo simulation and Enumeration approach for COmposite system Reliability Evaluation). This tool can perform such functions as least-cost probabilistic planning, independent power producer location and sizing, ranking of system component importance, and maintenance planning. The paper presents two applied examples. The first involves comparison of three basic system planning alternatives for meeting increased load demands in the Vancouver South Metro system at satisfactory reliability with the minimum investment. The second example involves identification of the best location and size of non-utility generators connected to the area transmission system, based on reliability and economic criteria.

Book excerpt: Adverse weather such as hurricanes can significantly affect the reliability of composite power systems. Predicting the impact of hurricanes can help utilities for better preparedness and make appropriate restoration arrangements. In this dissertation, the impact of hurricanes on the reliability of composite power systems is investigated. Firstly, the impact of adverse weather on the long-term reliability of composite power systems is investigated by using Markov cut-set method. The Algorithms for the implementation is developed. Here, two-state weather model is used. An algorithm for sequential simulation is also developed to achieve the same goal. The results obtained by using the two methods are compared. The comparison shows that the analytical method can obtain comparable results and meantime it can be faster than the simulation method. Secondly, the impact of hurricanes on the short-term reliability of composite power systems is investigated. A fuzzy inference system is used to assess the failure rate increment of system components. Here, different methods are used to build two types of fuzzy inference systems. Considering the fact that hurricanes usually last only a few days, short-term minimal cut-set method is proposed to compute the time-specific system and nodal reliability indices of composite power systems. The implementation demonstrates that the proposed methodology is effective and efficient and is flexible in its applications. Thirdly, the impact of hurricanes on the short-term reliability of composite power systems including common-cause failures is investigated. Here, two methods are proposed to archive this goal. One of them uses a Bayesian network to alleviate the dimensionality problem of conditional probability method. Another method extends minimal cut-set method to accommodate common-cause failures. The implementation results obtained by using the two methods are compared and their discrepancy is analyzed. Finally, the proposed methods in this dissertation are also applicable to other applications in power systems.

Book excerpt: This research proposes an efficient reliability modeling and simulation methodology in power systems to include photovoltaic units, wind farms and storage. Energy losses by wake effect in a wind farm are incorporated. Using the wake model, wind shade, shear effect and wind direction are also reflected. For solar modules with titled surface, more accurate hourly photovoltaic power in a specific location is calculated with the physical specifications. There exists a certain level of correlation between renewable energy and load. This work uses clustering algorithms to consider those correlated variables. Different approaches are presented and applied to the composite power system, and compared with different scenarios using reliability analysis and simulation. To verify the results, reliability indices are compared with those from original data. As the penetration of renewables increases, the reliability issues will become more important because of the intermittent and non-dispatchable nature of these sources of power. Storage can provide the ability to regulate these fluctuations. The use of storage is investigated in this research. To determine the operating states and transition times of all turbines, Monte Carlo is used for system simulation in the thesis. A conventional power system from IEEE Reliability Test Systems is used with transmission line capacity, and wind and solar data are from National Climatic Data Center and National Renewal Energy Laboratory. The results show that the proposed technique is effective and efficient in practical applications for reliability analysis.
