Book Synopsis The Urban Fantastic in Nineteenth-Century European Literature by : Patricia García
Download or read book The Urban Fantastic in Nineteenth-Century European Literature written by Patricia García and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Urban Fantastic in Nineteenth-Century European Literature explores transnational perspectives of modern city life in Europe by engaging with the fantastic tropes and metaphors used by writers of short fiction. Focusing on the literary city and literary representations of urban experience throughout the nineteenth century, the works discussed incorporate supernatural occurrences in a European city and the supernatural of these stories stems from and belongs to the city. The argument is structured around three primary themes. “Architectures”, “Encounters” and “Rhythms” make reference to three axes of city life: material space, human encounters, and movement. This thematic approach highlights cultural continuities and thus supports the use of the label of “urban fantastic” within and across the European traditions studied here.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work brings together the study of political and literary thought in response to revolution in order to present an alternative view of the strength of liberalism generally and progressivism in particular. It re-examines the achievements of progressive thought about politics, history, nationhood, and literature, investigating the basis of the philosophical dispute between Conservative and left Liberals. The strong presence of progressive thought in Spain is affirmed. The study also underlines the importance for literary historians of understanding more sympathetically the contribution of Conservative Liberal thought to a recognizable Liberal Romanticism.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to identify Ros de Olano's specific innovations and departures from Romanticism through a comparative study of his work and its precedents and contemporaries throughout Europe, with a view to later developments. It explores his literary engagement with the legacy of transcendental idealism and the autobiographical traditions. His privileging of incident and episode over more conventional narrative, his favouring of irreconcileability over resolution is explained and placed in a detailed context. In searching for alternatives to his literary problems, he makes a remarkable contribution to Spanish prose literature.

Book Synopsis Madame Bovary (New Edition) by : Gustave Flaubert
Download or read book Madame Bovary (New Edition) written by Gustave Flaubert and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madame Bovary is the French writer Gustave Flaubert's debut novel. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was a notorious perfectionist and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the precise word"). Long established as one of the greatest novels ever written, the book has often been described as a "perfect" work of fiction. Henry James writes: "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment." Giorgio de Chirico said that in his opinion "from the narrative point of view, the most perfect book is Madame Bovary by Flaubert".
Download or read book The Time Ship written by Enrique Gaspar and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. G. Wells wasn't the only nineteenth-century writer to dream of a time machine. The Spanish playwright Enrique Gaspar published El anacronópete—"He who flies against time"—eight years before Wells's influential work appeared. The novel begins at the 1878 Paris Exposition, where Dr. Don Sindulfo unveils his new invention—which looks like a giant sailing vessel. Soon the doctor embarks on a voyage back in time, accompanied by a motley crew of French prostitutes and Spanish soldiers. The purpose of his expedition is to track down the imprisoned wife of a third-century Chinese emperor, believed to possess the secret to immortality. A classic tale of obsession, high adventure, and star-crossed love, The Time Ship includes intricately drawn illustrations from the original 1887 edition, and a critical introduction that argues persuasively for The Time Ship's historical importance to science fiction and world literature.
