This research volume is the first of a set of three Springer books on Lazare Nicolas Marguérite Carnot’s (1753–1823) remarkable work: Essay on Machines in General (Essai sur les machines en général [1783] 1786). The other two forthcoming volumes are: Principes fondamentaux de l’équilibre et du mouvement (1803) and Géométrie de position (1803). Lazare Carnot – l'organisateur de la victoire – in Essai sur le machine en général (1786) assumed that the generalization of machines was a necessity for society and its economic development. Subsequently, his new coming science applied to machines attracted considerable interest for technician, as well, already in the 1780’s. With no lack in rigour, Carnot used geometric and trigonometric rather than algebraic arguments, and usually went on to explain in words what the formulae contained. His main physical– mathematical concepts were the Geometric motion and Moment of activity–concept of Work . In particular, he found the invariants of the transmission of motion (by stating the principle of the moment of the quantity of motion) and theorized the condition of the maximum efficiency of mechanical machines (i.e., principle of continuity in the transmission of power). While the core theme remains the theories and historical studies of the text, the book contains an extensive Introduction and an accurate critical English Translation – including the parallel text edition and substantive critical/explicative notes – of Essai sur les machines en général (1786). The authors offer much-needed insight into the relation between mechanics, mathematics and engineering from a conceptual, empirical and methodological, and universalis point of view. Fin qui tutto semplice. Agli inizi del ventesimo secolo arriva la FISICA MODERNA, che poi tanto moderna non è, visto che ha più di 100 anni.La Fisica moderna si suddivide in due grandi branche: la relatività di Einstein e la fisica Quantistica.La relatività di Einstein, si rivolge ad oggetti in movimento a velocità paragonabili a quelle della luce (Relatività ristretta o speciale) ed entità di grandi dimensioni nel campo del macrocosmo (Relatività Generale). La Relatività, pur essendo classificata come Fisica moderna, continua ad essere una teoria "deterministica". La fisica quantistica, invece, studia la realtà infinitesima (microcosmo), dove la natura ha un comportamento molto bizzarro: si compone di particelle infinitesime disordinate, difficilmente rappresentabili singolarmente, anche se nel complesso poi creano un ordine sorprendente.Una molecola d'acqua costituita da una moltitudine di elementi infinitesimi (atomi, protoni, neutroni, elettroni, quark, ....) uniti fino a formare ad esempio "il mare", si mostra a noi di un ordine, una bellezza ed una eleganza senza precedenti.La fisica quantistica è una teoria di tipo "indeterministica", ovvero studia la materia nel suo comportamento pressappoco come l'uscita di un numero in un lancio di dadi.Nonostante entrambe le teorie abbiano raggiunto una condizione nella modellazione dei fenomeni fisici senza eguali, molti sono i fisici ancora al lavoro nella ricerca di una teoria unitaria che comprendi lo studio dell'infinitamente piccolo (Fisica Quantistica) e lo studio dell'infinitamente grande (Teoria della Relatività).I due campi della fisica moderna si contrappongono nei concetti deterministici della Relatività e nei concetti indeterministici della Fisica Quantistica.Ai tempi della formazione della Teoria della Relatività, la Teoria quantistica non aveva ancora raggiunto la maturità dei giorni d'oggi; Einstein lavorò comunque ad una teoria unitaria dei campi che comprendesse una rappresentazione conciliata dei fenomeni quantistici e gravitativi, però questa volta senza successo.Ad oggi una tale teoria denominata "Teoria del tutto" continua a non esistere, nonostante le numerose proposte, tra le quali la più nota è la famosa Teoria delle Superstringhe.Con la presente esposizione, ho cercato di trattare i temi con un approccio innovativo rispetto a molti altri trattati che spesso risultano troppo "divulgativi" per una corretta comprensione delle teorie oppure in alternativa presentano una elevata dose di "matematica universitaria". Per quanto possibile è stato utilizzato un linguaggio sufficiente ad essere interpretato con competenze matematiche e fisiche che si apprendono in un liceo, in modo da far comprendere principalmente i concetti senza però tralasciare le rigorose formule e dimostrazioni matematiche.Il presente testo non si arroga la prerogativa di essere esaustivo nell'interpretazione della teoria quantistica e della relatività di Einstein, ma è certamente utile per acquisire nozioni al fine di poter comprendere in visione scientifica i testi in commercio di carattere divulgativo sull'argomento e comunque creare ottimi presupposti per futuri approfondimenti di carattere universitario.Ho preferito separare in due ben distinte sezioni le due teorie della fisica moderna: la prima parte sarà dedicata alle due teorie sulla Relatività e la seconda parte alla teoria sulla Fisica Quantistica.

Book excerpt: This book presents a historical and scientific analysis as historical epistemology of the science of weights and mechanics in the sixteenth century, particularly as developed by Tartaglia in his Quesiti et inventioni diverse, Book VII and Book VIII (1546; 1554). In the early 16th century mechanics was concerned mainly with what is now called statics and was referred to as the Scientia de ponderibus, generally pursued by two very different approaches. The first was usually referred to as Aristotelian, where the equilibrium of bodies was set as a balance of opposite tendencies to motion. The second, usually referred to as Archimedean, identified statics with centrobarica, the theory of centres of gravity based on symmetry considerations. In between the two traditions the Italian scholar Niccolò Fontana, better known as Tartaglia (1500?–1557), wrote the treatise Quesiti et inventioni diverse (1546). This volume consists of three main parts. In the first, a historical excursus regarding Tartaglia’s lifetime, his scientific production and the Scientia de ponderibus in the Arabic-Islamic culture, and from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, is presented. Secondly, all the propositions of Books VII and VIII, by relating them with the Problemata mechanica by the Aristotelian school and Iordani opvsculvm de ponderositate by Jordanus de Nemore are examined within the history and historical epistemology of science. The last part is relative to the original texts and critical transcriptions into Italian and Latin and an English translation. This work gathers and re-evaluates the current thinking on this subject. It brings together contributions from two distinguished experts in the history and historical epistemology of science, within the fields of physics, mathematics and engineering. It also gives much-needed insight into the subject from historical and scientific points of view. Book excerpt: This volume is presented as a companion study to my translation of Galileo's MS 27, Galileo's Logical Treatises, which contains Galileo's appropriated questions on Aristotle's Posterior Analytics - a work only recently transcribed from the Latin autograph. Its purpose is to acquaint an English-reading audience with the teaching in those treatises. This is basically a sixteenth-century logic of discovery and of proof about which little is known in the present day, yet one that arguably guided the most significant research program of the seventeenth century. Despite its historical and systematic importance, the teaching is difficult to explain to the modern reader. Part of the problem stems from the fragmentary nature of the manuscript in which it is preserved, part from the contents of the teaching itself, which requires a considerable propadeutic for its comprehension. A word of explanation is thus required to set out the structure of the volume and to detail the editorial decisions that underlie its organization. Two major manuscript studies have advanced the cause of scholarship on Galileo within the past two decades. The first relates to Galileo's experimental activity at Padua prior to his discoveries with the telescope that led to the publication of his Sidereus nuncius in 1610. Much of this activity has been uncovered by Stillman Drake in analyses of manuscript fragments associated with the composition of Galileo's Two New Sciences, fragments now bound in a codex identified as MS 72 in the collection of Galileiana at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence.
