Book excerpt: The Virginia Highway Research Council has proposed a study of the skid resistance of bituminous surfaces incorporating relatively hard and expensive aggregates. The hardness of the aggregates to be used aluminum oxide (Exolon) and calcined kaolin -- is expected to contribute appreciably to the lasting skid resistance of the surfaces. Since these hard aggregates are expensive, this study was undertaken to explore the possibility of using them in the sprinkle method of resurfacing pavements, which requires less high quality aggregate than does paving with conventionally designed mixes. Inasmuch as the entire study should cover a period of approximately two years, with the author being involved only in the first part, this report presents only the results of the preliminary work. Final results and evaluations will be reported by Council personnel when substantial data have been collected. In the preliminary work, small test beams were fabricated and implanted in newly resurfaced pavements. Periodic skid values are to be obtained with the British portable tester. The texturing of newly resurfaced pavements has also been proposed and attempted. A solvent was used in conjunction with normal traffic wear to produce a coarse surface and hopefully a high skid value.

Book excerpt: Standard pavement types and experimental surfaces on roads throughout Kentucky were evaluated in terms of skid resistance and effects of traffic, wear, and polishing. Friction-versus-speed gradients and the relationships between locked-wheel and incipient friction were determined. Asphaltic concrete pavements on high-speed, four-lane roads were found to be significantly more skid resistant than on two-lane highways and somewhat more skid resistant than concrete surfaces (especially those containing calcareous gravel aggregates). Sand-asphalt surfaces containing significant proportions of limestone sands showed inadequate level of friction for the traffic sustained. Several experimental sand asphalts without limestone sands exhibited greater skid resistance; Kentucky rock asphalt surfaces remain the most skid resistant of all surfaces investigated.

Book excerpt: Cores from concrete pavements that had been exposed to rain while plastic and specimens prepared in the laboratory and exposed to artificial rain showers were tested for abrasion, skid resistance, and scaling. Companion not-rained-on cores and laboratory specimens were similarly tested. The results indicated that average skid resistance measured with the British Pendulum Tester (BPT) was similar on both rained-on and not-rained-on cores and specimens. Full-scale tire skid numbers were about 10% higher on not-rained-on untraveled pavement sections than on adjacent rained-on sections. Scaling caused by freeze-thaw exposure and abrasion loss determined with the U.S. Corps of Engineers Method of Test for Resistance of Concrete or Mortar Surfaces to Abrasion (Procedure CRD-C52-54) were consistently higher on rained-on than on comparable not-rained-on cores and specimens. Abrasion loss was higher on untraveled pavements than on those that had been in use for several years. Also, abrasion loss was higher on specimens that had been exposed to heavier rain intensity, longer rain duration, and deeper texturing.
