Book excerpt: Although the study of wall pressure fluctuations (WPFs)has a long and venerable history, relatively little is known about the nature of the source terms responsible for the wall pressure. This study takes advantage of the three-dimensional velocity fields available from turbulence simulations to try to answer some long-standing questions about the nature of WPFs. Which parts of the boundary layer generate the various wave number regions of the wall pressure? What are the dominant source terms? What are the relative magnitudes of the mean-shear (MS) and turbulence-turbulence (TT)wall pressures? What physical processes in the boundary layer generate the wall pressure?

Book excerpt: This experimental study was carried out at a free-stream Mach number of 0.6 and a Reynolds number per foot of 3.45 x 106. The magnitudes of the wall-pressure fluctuations agree with the Lilley-Hodgson theoretical results. Space-time correlations of the wall-pressure fluctuations generally agree with Willmarth's results for longitudinal separation distances. The convection velocity of the fluctuations is found to increase with increasing separation distances, and its significance is explained. Measurements with the longitudinal component of the velocity fluctuations indicate that the contributions to the wall-pressure fluctuations are from two regions, an inner region near the wall and an outer region linked with the intermittency.

Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the ERCOFTAC Workshop on Progress in Wall Turbulence: Understanding and Modelling, that was held in Lille, France from June 18 to 20, 2014. The workshop brought together world specialists of near wall turbulence and stimulated exchanges between them around up-to-date theories, experiments, simulations and numerical models. This book contains a coherent collection of recent results on near wall turbulence including theory, new experiments, DNS and modeling with RANS, LES. The fact that both physical understanding and modeling by different approaches are addressed by the best specialists in a single workshop is original.

Book excerpt: Measurements made on some of the characteristics of the turbulent pressure field at the wall of a cylindrical pipe yielded root-mean-square pressure levels, power spectra, longitudinal space-time correlations, and convection velocity over a limited range of Reynolds number. The root-mean-square pressure levels were proportional to the dynamic pressure and when nondimensionalized by use of the dynamic pressure were observed to be independent of the Reynolds number and approximately equal to 0.008 over the Reynolds number range examined. The measurements indicate the existence of an apparent downstrea c nvection of the pressure field at a rate which is approximately the mean discharge velocity of the pipe flow. The pressure field in addition to being convected was also dispersed. Estimates of the scale of the turbulence were obtained. A limited statistical analysis of the pressure time history indicates that the amplitude variation is Gaussian. (Author).

Book excerpt: Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 2: Complex Flow-Structure Interactions, Second Edition, enables readers to fully understand flow-induced vibration and sound, unifying the disciplines of fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, vibration, acoustics, and statistics in order to classify and examine each of the leading sources of vibration and sound induced by various types of fluid motion. Starting from classical theories of aeroacoustics and hydroacoustics, a formalism of integral solutions valid for sources near boundaries is developed and then broadened to address different source types, including hydrodynamically induced cavitation and bubble noise, turbulent wall-pressure fluctuations, pipe and duct systems, lifting surface flow noise and vibration, and noise from rotating machinery. Each chapter is illustrated with comparisons of leading formulas and measured data. Combined with its companion book, Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 1: General Concepts and Elementary Sources, the book covers everything an engineer needs to understand flow-induced sound and vibration. This book will be a vital source of information for postgraduate students, engineers and researchers with an interest in aerospace, ships and submarines, offshore structures, construction, and ventilation. Presents every important topic in flow-induced sound and vibration Covers all aspects of the topics addressed, from fundamental theory, to the analytical formulas used in practice Provides the building blocks of computer modeling for flow-induced sound and vibration

Book excerpt: This document consists of the text and viewgraphs of a paper presented at the ONR Workshop on Nonequilibrium Turbulence held at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, from 10-1 2 March 1993. This workshop was the first step of an ONR Accelerated Research Initiative (ARI) to establish the state-of-the-art for theory, computation, and experimentation relevant to turbulence in a nonequilibrium state, or, more generally, to turbulence in complex flows. The overall goal of the initiative is to understand the behavior of turbulence in such complex conditions in order to advance our prediction and control capabilities. When a cylinder in axial flow is sufficiently long and thin, the growth of the boundary layer results in its thickness exceeding the radius of the cylinder such that the three-dimensional effects due to transverse curvature cannot be neglected. With this condition, the wall of the cylinder provides less constraint on the outer flow and motion of eddies than is experienced in an equilibrium flat plate boundary layer, introducing an avenue for enhanced inner-layer/outer-layer interaction and modified turbulence activity. In this paper, we present results of measurements of the fluctuating wall pressure and turbulent streamwise velocity in the turbulent boundary layer on a cylinder in axial flow to identify the coherent structures that contribute to the fluctuating pressure at the wall. Determining the influence of transverse curvature on the relationship between the wall pressure and velocity field allows examination of its effect on the structure of equilibrium boundary layer turbulence.

Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic equations well describe averaged parameters of turbulent steady flows, at least in pipes where boundary conditions can be estimated. The equations might outline the parameters fluctuations as well, if entry conditions at current boundaries were known. This raises, in addition, the more comprehensive problem of the primary perturbation nature, noted by H.A. Lorentz, which still remains unsolved. Generally, any flow steadiness should be supported by pressure waves emitted by some external source, e.g. a piston or a receiver. The wave plane front in channels quickly takes convex configuration owing to Rayleigh's law of diffraction divergence. The Schlieren technique and pressure wave registration were employed to investigate the wave interaction with boundary layer, while reflecting from the channel wall. The reflection induces boundary-layer local separation and following pressure rapid increase within the perturbation zone. It propagates as an acoustic wave packet of spherical shape, bearing oscillations of hydrodynamic parameters. Superposition of such packets forms a spatio-temporal field of oscillations fading as 1/r. This implies a mechanism of the turbulence. Vorticity existing in the boundary layer does not penetrate in itself into potential main stream. But the wave leaving the boundary layer carries away some part of fluid along with frozen-in vorticity. The vorticity eddies form another field of oscillations fading as 1/r2. This implies a second mechanism of turbulence. Thereupon the oscillation spatio-temporal field and its randomization development are easy computed. Also, normal burning transition into detonation is explained, and the turbulence inverse problem is set and solved as applied to plasma channels created by laser Besselian beams.
