Book excerpt: Traffic-associated fatigue damage is one of the major distresses in which flexible pavements fail. This type of distress is the result of many thousands--or even millions of wheel loads passing over a pavement. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's pre-publication draft of NCHRP Research Report 982: Relationships Between the Fatigue Properties of Asphalt Binders and the Fatigue Performance of Asphalt Mixtures details these relationships and makes several conclusions and recommendations.

Cracking typically occurs within the asphalt binder phase of asphalt mixtures. Thus, asphalt binder fatigue resistance is critical in determining overall pavement fatigue performance. One procedure commonly used to characterize asphalt binder fatigue resistance is the time sweep test, which consists of repeated torsional loading of a cylindrical specimen in the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). Generally, apparent changes in material properties with respect to number of cycles of loading are used to define fatigue failure of the asphalt binder. Results of this test have been shown to correlate well with asphalt mixture fatigue performance. However, the mechanisms responsible for changes in material properties during fatigue testing in the DSR were previously not well understood. Results in this study demonstrate that fracture can account for changes in loading resistance of asphalt binders during time sweep testing. Under cyclic torsional loading of cylindrical specimens, macro fracture is shown to manifest in the form of edge fracture. Edge fracture is a circumferential crack starting at the periphery of a cylindrical sample that propagates inward as loading is applied, reducing the effective sample size. Digital visualization of the fractured specimens allowed for determination of the fractured and intact sample area. Predictions of fracture propagation based on measurements of loading resistance and fracture mechanics concepts agreed favorably with actual measurements based on visualization. Furthermore, the fracture morphology and progression of crack growth of asphalt binders matched those observed for other materials under similar loading conditions. Based on these results, fatigue damage characterization of asphalt binders can be improved by incorporating fracture mechanics into an analysis framework for DSR fatigue test results. An analysis framework based on fracture principles is presented. The proposed model allows predicting fatigue life at any loading amplitude using the results of a single fatigue test. Additionally, it is demonstrated that time-temperature superposition is applicable to fatigue crack propagation of asphalt binders, allowing for efficient prediction of fatigue performance at multiple temperatures. The model is validated using a comparison between asphalt mixture and binder fatigue test results.

Book excerpt: A primary objective for the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) A-003A contract was to extend and verify the results obtained by other SHRP contractors on the performance-related characteristics of asphalt binders in paving mixes. This report specifically addresses validation of the following: 1) binder properties proposed by the A-002A contractor to predict asphalt-aggregate mix performance in terms of fatigue, permanent deformation, and thermal cracking; and 2) conditioning procedures that produce binder properties representative of those in a pavement immediately after construction and after several years of service. While water sensitivity requirements are not included in the binder specification, validation efforts in the water-sensitivity area are also described. Materials used in the investigation included 8 to 16 asphalt binders and 2 to 4 aggregates obtained from the SHRP Materials Reference Library.

Book excerpt: One of the main concerns with the application of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the asphalt concrete pavement is fatigue cracking due to the stiffness increase with the addition of aged and stiff RAP binder. The purpose of this study is to evaluate fatigue performance of asphalt binder and mixtures with different RAP percentages (0, 15, 25, 35 and 40 %). Among these, 35 and 40 % RAP mixes are considered as high RAP content. This study describes the results of laboratory fatigue response of asphalt mixtures and extracted binders containing RAP to define the effect of RAP on the fatigue performance. To achieve this objective, mixes and binders were tested using the beam fatigue test and the time-sweep test, respectively. Test results were analyzed using two different fatigue approaches, reduction in stiffness and dissipated energy criteria. Results showed that a higher initial stiffness and initial dissipated energy initiate the fatigue failure faster. Since both binders and mixes show an increase in the stiffness and energy consumed per loading cycle with the addition of RAP, resulting mixes containing higher RAP have a very short fatigue life. Also, the fatigue endurance limit decreases drastically with the addition of RAP in the mix. The results comparing two different RAP sources showed that the RAP source has more prominent effect on the mix fatigue performance than the binder fatigue performance. Finally, the traditional fatigue life prediction model is modified to incorporate the effect of RAP in the fatigue equation. The modified regression model predicted reasonable fatigue life of the mixture with a coefficient of determination (R2) close to 1. The measured and predicted fatigue life results were found close to each other for both mix and binder containing RAP.

Book excerpt: Several different types of modifiers are increasingly being used to improve the performance of asphalt binders or to achieve desired mixture production characteristics (e.g., Warm Mix Asphalt). However, current Superpave performance specifications do not accurately reflect the performance characteristics of these modified binders. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the inherent fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt binders in the form of a matrix with rigid particle inclusions. The underlying rationale for this approach was to subject the binders to a state of stress that is similar to the one in a full asphalt mixture. This was achieved by fabricating and testing composite specimens of the asphalt binders and glass beads with a specified gradation. Four asphalt binders with similar true temperature grades but different modifiers were used in this study. The viscoelastic and fatigue cracking characteristics of the binders were measured using the glass bead-binder composite specimens in a dynamic shear rheometer at an intermediate temperature. The results demonstrate that the four asphalt binders modified using different methods had different damage characteristics despite the fact that these four binders were rated to have a similar performance grade based on the Superpave specifications. Fatigue cracking characteristics of the glass bead-binder test specimens used in this study were qualitatively very similar to the fatigue cracking characteristics of full asphalt mixtures using the same binders. The rank order of fatigue cracking resistance for the four glass bead-binder mixtures compared reasonably well to the rank order of fatigue cracking resistance for the full asphalt mixtures that incorporated these asphalt binders.

Asphalt binder is a very important component of asphaltic mixture. The fatigue performance of asphalt binder also greatly affects that of asphaltic mixture. Asphalt binder's fatigue characteristics are affected by external conditions, such as temperature and loading rate. It is warranted to study the effects of these external conditions on fatigue of asphalt binder and take them into account. New fatigue tests and properties have been proposed to characterize the fatigue behavior of asphalt binders, such as monotonic constant shear-rate tests. This study investigated the effects of temperature and shear rate on fatigue properties of asphalt binder. Two asphalt binders were tested with a range of temperature and shear rates. It was found that time-temperature superposition principle also applies to critical strain energy density and shear strength of asphalt binders. The values of shift factors for building the master curves of critical strain energy and shear strength are comparable.

Book excerpt: The adhesiveness between aggregate and asphalt binder is believed to affect the life cycle of asphalt pavements, mainly in the presence of water. One of the most common asphalt pavement distresses is fatigue cracking. The objective of this article is to investigate the relationship between adhesion properties and fatigue life of asphalt mixtures. The asphalt bond strength test was used to measure adhesion (pull-off tensile strength) at two different moisture conditioning states: unconditioned (or dry) and conditioned in distilled water for 24 h at 40°C. The test consists of measuring the pull-off pressure required to break an aggregate-binder interface, called the pull-off tensile strength. For the fatigue damage characterization of the mixtures, controlled crosshead sinusoidal tension-compression tests were used, associated with the Simplified Viscoelastic Continuum Damage modeling protocol. Four asphalt mixtures were investigated. They share the same aggregate gradation but differ in aggregate source (two different sources) and the presence or absence of an anti-stripping agent. The mixture with pure asphalt binder showed higher values of pull-off tensile strength than mixtures with asphalt binder doped by an anti-stripping agent. However, the analysis of the pull-off tensile strength ratio (comparison between unconditioned and moisture-conditioned specimens) showed that the addition of anti-stripping agent provided significant moisture damage resistance in the aggregate-binder interface. Results also show that mixtures with asphalt binder modified by anti-stripping agent had higher simulated fatigue life than mixtures with pure asphalt binder. Excellent correlations were obtained between the strain amplitude required to obtain a given @ Nf (strain amplitude @ Nf ) with pull-off tensile strength, which confirms that the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures is related to the adhesion between aggregate and asphalt binder.

Book excerpt: A result of the Strategic Highway Research Program's asphalt research is the development of performance-based specifications for asphalt binders and mixtures to control 3 distress modes: rutting; fatigue cracking; and thermal cracking. The SHRP A-005 project developed detailed pavement performance models to support these binder and mixture specifications and performance-based mixture designs. This report documents the findings of this extensive research effort and provides supporting data for the performance-based specifications and mixture design procedure called SUPERPAVE. The A-005 contract developed and used a sophisticated, mechanistic-based pavement performance model to define the relationships between asphalt binder and mixture properties and pavement distress. A comprehensive pavement performance model was developed that predicts the amount of fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and rutting in asphalt concrete pavements with time, using results from the accelerated laboratory tests. The pavement performance models for each distress were also used to confirm the relevant binder and mixture properties established by other SHRP contractors. The model has 3 parts: a mixture evaluation model; a pavement response model; and a pavement distress model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt pavement cracking is the most prevalent distress in pavements. In flexible pavements, fatigue cracking is a major cause of deterioration and can significantly reduce the service life of pavements [1]. Fatigue cracking is caused by traffic loading and can be accelerated by aging of the asphalt, freeze-thaw cycles, and poorly designed asphalt concrete mixture. Fatigue resistance of asphalt mixes could be improved by adding Polymer Modified Asphalt Cement (PMAC) [2]. In particular, the use of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) was found to be an efficient way to increase the fatigue life of mixes [3]. However, the primary issue is the lack of consistent performance testing methods to determine fatigue performance. In addition, the relationship between the PMAC properties and mixture performance is not fully understood. This thesis will focus on the evaluation of asphalt mixes with PMAC using the 4 point-bending beam (4PB) test to determine the fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. The classical fatigue “WÖHLER'' curve and “DGCB” damage rate method, which was developed at Département Génie Civil et Bâtiment in Lyon, have been used to evaluate and characterize the fatigue of the asphalt mixes in this study. In general, it was found that the fatigue life (Nf50%) was improved when Polymer Modified Asphalt Cement was used, and the polymer content increased. Both fatigue analysis methods, by WÖHLER curve and the DGCB method, showed that the addition of SBS polymer improved the fatigue life and reduced the damage from fatigue loading. Finally, some recommendations were made with regards to fatigue testing.
