Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine whether there is a relationship between specific coaching leadership styles and athlete intrinsic motivation within Division III college baseball and softball players. In addition, the study also aimed to see what male and female student-athletes prefer in their coaching leadership behaviors. The study consisted of 21 (N=21) people, 19 student-athletes between 18-21 and two coaches. The Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) and Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II) were both utilized in order to determine the relationships. Results showed there is no significant relationship between leadership styles of coaches and athlete intrinsic motivation. In addition, results show that male student-athletes prefer training & instruction and female student-athletes prefer positive feedback in their coaches’ leadership behaviors. Future studies could look into the relationship of leadership styles and athlete intrinsic motivation in DI and DII athletes. A larger sample size of both coaches and many different team sports are two areas to be also further examined.

Book excerpt: This concurrent, embedded mixed methods study used predominantly quantitative analyses to examine coach expectations and behaviors on female athletes' intrinsic motivation to play softball. Qualitative methods in the form of structured, open-ended questions were used to enhance the data by examining athletes' perceptions of coaching behavior and changes in motivation and competence levels. A cluster sampling technique was used to randomly select 20 Division I softball teams competing in the United States. The resulting quantitative participant sample included 174 female collegiate athletes ranging in age from 18-22 years old, and 20 male and female head coach participants ranging in age from 24-60 plus years. Qualitative procedures involved inductive content analysis of interview responses from 41 female collegiate softball athletes. A structured interview protocol was followed to answer the research questions of how do female athletes' perceive head coaches affect intrinsic motivation to play softball for their current team, and specifically, what types of coaching behaviors do athletes perceive to alter their motivation to play softball? Results of this study indicate coaches do form expectations about athletes' performance ability, and coaching behaviors differed between expectancy groups. Competence and motivation levels remained constant over the course of the study, but expectancy groups were motivated differently. Low expectancy athletes were more extrinsically motivated, and showed trends of higher levels of amotivation than high and average expectancy athletes. High expectancy athletes showed trends indicating more intrinsic motivation overall. Low expectancy athletes perceived more ignoring, or non-rewarding, behaviors than other athletes. Athletes experienced a decrease in encouragement and corrective instruction from pre- to post-study. Overall, athletes reported aspects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship affected competence and motivation the most. Relationships characterized by open, direct, clear communication were the biggest positive influence on motivation and competence. Other coach strategies including emphasis of athlete's personal best, actions display confidence in the athlete's performance ability, and encouragement after performance attempts emerged as important factors enhancing athlete self-perception variables. Relationships characterized by unclear or no communication had the biggest negative influence on motivation and competence.

One hundred sixty-one Division I collegiate tennis players completed questionnaires of the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS), Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), and Sport Commitment Model Scale (SCMS). The results indicated that both perceived coaching behaviors, as well as an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation, were determinants of their sport commitment level. However, the findings did not confirm that an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation had a stronger influence on their sport commitment, than perceived coaching behaviors. In addition, the amount of scholarship provided to athletes positively contributed to their sport commitment. Based on the results, this study also discussed practical implications as well as provided directions for future research.

In addition, further analysis examined perceptions between student-athletes and head coaches based on the student-athletes' gender and academic year in school. The study included 121 NCAA Division I, team sport student-athletes and their respective head coaches from two institutions in the Midwest. One of the institutions was a medium sized, four-year, co-educational private university and the second was a large sized, four-year, coeducational public university. The first research question examined the demographic profile of the collegiate student-athletes participating in this study. The second research question studied the relationship between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and their respective head coaches' perceptions of these behaviors. Using Pearson product-moment correlation, three significant relationships existed between student-athletes and their head coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act. The third research question undertook paired samples t-tests to investigate the difference between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Paired samples t-tests revealed significant differences between student-athletes and head coaches for each practice, Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The fourth research question explored the difference between how NCAA Division I female and NCAA Division I male student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. The researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the question. ANOVAs revealed statistically significant differences for the practices of Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Paired samples t-tests revealed statistically significant differences for both genders with all Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. The final question studied the difference between how NCAA Division I student athletes, by academic year in school, perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Similar to the fourth question, the researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the data. ANOVAs revealed seven significant differences for four of the practices, Model the Way, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. In addition, paired samples t-tests showed differences in 18 out of a possible 20 cases involving academic year in school and The Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. In conclusion, scores between student-athletes and coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act showed a small, positive relationship; therefore, as student-athletes' scores increased so did their head coaches' scores. ANOVAs revealed significant mean differences in scores between female student athletes and their respective head coaches to male student-athletes and their head coaches. For all five practices, paired samples t-tests showed that the difference between mean student-athletes scores and mean head coaches scores were significant and that gender was not a differentiator when comparing scores for the practices. The independent variable with the most influence was academic year in school. Six-of-the-seven significant findings revealed smaller mean differences in scores between the upper-level student-athletes and coaches compared to lower-level student-athletes and coaches. Finally, significant differences existed in 18 of 20 possible cases comparing the mean scores of student-athletes to their head coaches for the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership when examining student-athlete academic year in school.

Book excerpt: Throughout the sport and exercise psychology literature, one topic that has been given increased attention is the leadership of athletes. Prior work has focused on the coach as a primary source of leadership for athletes and how that leadership can affect various student-athlete outcomes (Coleman, 1961; Gould, Chung Smith, & White, 2006; Smoll & Smith, 1989, 2006). These investigations have provided a wealth of information regarding coaches' influence over athletes in a number of different domains, such as motivation (Eccles,1996; Jowett, 2008; MacLean, 2012; Mageau & Vallerand, 2003), persistence (Calvo et al., 2010; Ryan & Deci, 2000), and performance (Gearity & Murray, 2011; Gillet, Vallerand, Amoura, & Baldes, 2010). Lacking the same depth of examination is the relationship between coaches and other educational leaders in an athlete's life that would provide much needed insight into their performance in an academic setting.More specifically, there is almost no research examining the relationships between coaches and teachers as they "co-lead" student-athletes. Given that teachers have been identified as one of the prime drivers of student achievement (Darling-Hammond, 1997) and coaches have been identified as one of the critical influences on student behavior (Smith, Smoll & Cummings, 2009) the lack of empirical evidence for the leadership dyad of teacher-coach on student-athlete outcomes is unfortunate. Seizing the opportunity to advance our understanding of the relationship dynamics and ecology of leaders in the inner-city high schools (Khalifa, 2012) will provide a more nuanced and comprehensive picture of the environment being established for Minority student-athletes.If educators (teachers and coaches) are similarly connected by the common goal of producing a successful student-athlete, a careful examination of their relationships is clearly in order. In other words, if we can begin to understand what the leaders think about each other-which is undoubtedly related to the way they treat each other-then we start to gain further insight into the relational ecology within which the minority student-athlete flourishes or flounders (Khalifa, Dunbar, & Douglas, 2013). Therefore, the overarching goal of my dissertation work is to address this gap in the literature by investigating the mutual perceptions of and behaviors between teachers and coaches as a precursor to understanding minority student-athlete outcomes in inner-city environments.

Book excerpt: "Recent literature suggests that coaches play a significant role in creating a climate that fosters self-determined motivation among athletes. Coaching style influences athlete perception, motivation, and performance. Research supports that an autonomy-supportive coaching style is an effective motivational tool for coaches, whereas a controlling coaching style is ineffective. Previous research has shown that an autonomy-supportive interpersonal style increases self-determined motivation among athletes. However, previous research typically includes only one interpersonal coaching style. In addition, there is minimal research looking at needs satisfaction mediating the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation through the SDT continuum. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with high school athletes' motivation as well as needs satisfaction. High school athletes from the Western region of North Carolina (n=162) completed the Coach Behavior Scale in Sport, Controlling Coach Behavior Scale, Behavior Regulation in Sport Questionnaire, and the Basic Needs Satisfaction Sport Scale. Correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze relationships among coaching behaviors, needs satisfaction, and motivation. The hypotheses were 1) autonomy-supportive coaching behavior is positively related to higher forms of self-determined motivation and needs satisfaction, 2) controlling coaching behavior is negatively related to self-determined forms of motivation and needs satisfaction, and3) needs satisfaction mediates the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation. As predicted, autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with higher forms of self-determined motivation (intrinsic: r=.463; integrated: r=.512; and identified: r=.558), whereas controlling coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with more extrinsic forms of motivation (external: r=.411 and amotivation: r=.279). Autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively correlated with all three needs (competence: r=.479, autonomy: r=.583, and relatedness: r=.582), and in turn, the three needs positively predicted higher forms of self-determined motivation. Multiple regression results indicate that the relationships of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with motivation are partially mediated by perceived needs satisfaction, but the relationships differed for different forms of motivation. Evidence for mediation was strongest for intrinsic motivation, and for integrated motivation and identified motivation, autonomous coach behavior added to the prediction suggesting the relationship was not fully mediated by needs satisfaction. For external regulation, controlling coaching behavior was a strong direct predictor with no evidence of mediation. The results indicate that autonomy-supportive coaching behavior predicts need satisfaction and enhances athlete motivation whereas controlling coaching behavior reduces self-determined motivation. Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship among coach leadership factors, perceived motivational climate, and athlete psychosocial outcomes. Servant leadership is a concept growing in interest and popularity in many domains (Anderson, 2005; Drury, 2004; Rieke, Hammermeister, & Chase, 2008). This research examined the impact of coach servant leadership on perceived motivational climate and athlete psychosocial outcomes among 260 female high school club soccer players. Coaches and athletes assessed coach servant leadership using the RSLP-S (Hammermeister et al., 2008). Athletes answered surveys on perceived motivational climate and a range of psychosocial outcomes, including ability to cope with stress, sport confidence, ability beliefs, intrinsic motivation, motivational orientations, trait anxiety, and individual and team satisfaction. Hierarchical Linear Models were set up to test individual hypotheses. Findings revealed that coaches' servant leadership perceptions differed for coaches and athletes. As a result, coach-perceived servant leadership did not predict increments in motivation climate or athlete psychosocial outcomes. However, the athlete-perceived coach servant leadership enhanced prediction efficiency for perceived mastery climate and most of the positive psychosocial outcomes. While the addition of athlete-perceived servant leadership predicted increments in mastery climate in the HLM model, only the trust/inclusion subscale was significant. If athletes perceive a coach as trustworthy and inclusive, they were more likely to perceive a mastery climate. Additionally, coaches who were older and had higher license levels within US Youth Soccer created a stronger mastery climate. The discrepancy between athlete and coach perceptions is consistent with research in social psychology (Harms and Crede, 2010) and sport (Smith & Smoll, 1999) where leaders such as coaches seem to be inaccurate judges of their own behaviors. Thus, these findings suggest that it may be important for coaches of this age group to find ways to develop perceptions of trust and inclusion among their athletes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to a) examine the correlational relationships between Canadian university athletes' perceptions of coach leadership behaviours and their perceptions of positive developmental outcomes (e.g., life skills) and negative experiences related to university sport, and b) explore how coach leadership behaviours and the associated developmental outcomes and negative experiences were described by both coaches and athletes. Data for this dissertation were collected over four stages. In Stage One, an online survey was used to collect data from a pan-Canadian sample (n = 605) of university athletes. In Stage Two, semi-structured open-ended interviews were conducted with fifteen university athletes. In Stage Three, semi-structured open-ended interviews were conducted with fourteen university coaches. In Stage Four, an online survey was used to collect data from a second pan-Canadian sample of university athletes (n = 498). Five articles were written to address the purpose of this dissertation. In Article One, data from two pan-Canadian samples of athletes were used to modify and confirm a new measurement tool known as the University Sport Experience Survey (USES). The USES provides a reliable and factorially-valid instrument for measuring development in university sport. In addition, Article One provided the first operational definitions of the positive developmental outcomes and negative experiences that could be reliably and validly assessed in a university sport context. Article Two qualitatively explored athletes' perceptions of the developmental outcomes associated with their participation in university sport, as well as their perceptions of transfer. Results provided additional support for certain USES categories to be used for understanding positive development within the context of Canadian university sport programs. Further, results suggested university sport programs offer rich opportunities for developing skills, qualities, experiences, and relationships needed to become functioning members in our society. In Article Three, quantitative survey data were used to assess the cross-sectional relationships between athletes' perceptions of their coaches' leadership behaviours and outcomes from the USES. Coach leadership behaviours were conceptualized within the Full Range Leadership Model and assessed using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Findings showed that transformational coaching was generally related to positive developmental outcomes and inversely related to athletes' negative experiences in sport. Moreover, coaches' passive/avoidant behaviors were commonly related to athletes' negative experiences in university sport. Contrary to expectations, passive/avoidant coaching behaviors were also positively related with a number of positive developmental outcomes. Article Four qualitatively assessed athletes' perceptions of who they believed was responsible for their positive development within the university sport context. Athletes specified other athletes, the head coach, the coaching staff, and their parents as the people who influenced their positive development within the context of university sport. Notably, athletes felt they themselves were the ones who contributed the most to their own development. Article Five qualitatively explored coaches' perceptions of and strategies for fostering their athletes' positive development through university sport. The coaches believed there were inherent conditions surrounding university sport that facilitated positive development. However, the coaches maximized their athletes' development by establishing a support network, building team culture, and empowering their student-athletes by teaching them fundamental skills related to self and social regulation. Together, the five articles make novel theoretical and practical knowledge contributions to the field of positive development through sport, and set a precedence for positive development research in university sport, as well as other emerging adult sport contexts.

The relationship between players' perceptions of the motivational climate and players' intrinsic motivation was also examined. This study was intended to provide evidence of how the coach's goal orientation affects the motivational climate perceived by players, and how perceived motivational climate influences intrinsic motivation. High school coaches and their players were contacted and participated in this study. Coaches (n = 18) and players (n = 187) filled out the Task and Ego in Sport Questionnaire and the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2. In addition, players filled out the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory.
