Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed a considerable upsurge of clinical and research interest in the problems of developmentally and physically the fields of psychology, disabled persons. Indeed, professionals from special education, rehabilitation, psychiatry, and social work have all directed attention to the development and implementation of evaluation and remedial programs. The heightened activity in this area is in part a result of early assessment research with these popUlations, which provided preliminary evidence of difficulties in social and emotional adjustment in many disabled individuals. In response to these findings, many intervention efforts have been implemented to deal with these issues and improve the life situation of the disabled. Also, there were indications that developmentally and physically disabled children often were deprived of adequate educations. As a result, legal and legislative initiatives have been enacted in recent years to make public education available to all students irrespective of disability. Central to all therapeutic and psychoeducational endeavors with the disabled is psychological evaluation. Only through careful and com prehensive psychological evaluation can areas of deficit as well as strengths be identified. Once treatment targets and goals have been ascertained, psychological evaluation is needed to determine the efficacy of intervention strategies. However, the field of psychological evalua tion, in general, and with disabled persons, in particular, has become highly specialized. This is largely a function of the changing roles of psychological evaluators.

Book excerpt: A compelling and compassionate case study approach to a broad range of neuropsychological disorders Neuropsychological Assessment and Intervention for Childhood and Adolescent Disorders focuses on the neuropsychological assessment and evidence-based practices available for assessing and treating children living with the etiological and neurological components of various disorders. Each chapter provides one or more case studies along with helpful background information, assessment results, and recommendations based on assessment data. Bridging science and practice, the book reviews the scientific literature, research on clinical implications, and evidence-based treatment of such disorders as: Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Specific Language Impairment/Dysphasia Autism Spectrum Disorders Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Tourette Syndrome Traumatic Brain Injury Childhood Cancer Epilepsy Cerebrovascular Disease Low Birth Weight Environmental Toxin Exposure Neurotoxins, Pregnancy, and Subsequent Disorders Chromosomal Anomalies Neurocutaneous Disorders Metabolic Disorders Each case study complements the content of each chapter by illustrating how the assessment process can inform intervention efforts for children. In addition, the cases humanize the effects of various disorders and demonstrate the usefulness of neuropsychological information in treatment and intervention planning, especially within children's educational and social contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comprehensive reference for informative WISC-V assessment Essentials of WISC-V Assessmentprovides step-by-step guidance for administering, scoring, and interpreting the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V). Packed with practical tips for more accurate assessment, this informative guide includes numerous case studies that illustrate a range of real-world issues. Special attention is devoted to the assessment of individuals who have significant learning difficulties, such as learning disabilities, and who speak English as a second language. The WISC-V is a valuable assessment tool, but it must be administered and scored appropriately to gain meaning from score interpretation. This book gives you an in-depth understanding of the WISC-V assessment and interpretive process to assist practitioners in: Conducting efficient and informative WISC-V assessments Utilizing WISC-V in cross-battery and neuropsychological assessment Applying WISC-V in the identification of specific learning disabilities Utilizing WISC-V in nondiscriminatory assessment of English language learners Writing theory-based WISC-V reports Linking WISC-V findings to interventions based on individual performance As the world's most widely-used intelligence test for children, the WISC-V is useful in diagnosing intellectual disabilities and specific learning disabilities, as well as in identifying giftedness. In this volume, sample reports demonstrate how WISC-V assessment results may be linked to interventions, accommodations, modifications, and compensatory strategies that facilitate positive outcomes for children. Essentials of WISC-V Assessment is the all-in-one practical resource for both students and practitioners. The book can be used on its own or with companion software (purchased separately) that provides a user-friendly tool for producing psychometrically and theoretically defensible interpretations of WISC-V performance, and may be used to develop interventions based on each child's strengths and weaknesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpret the WISC–V to help diagnose learning disabilities and to translate profiles of test scores to educational action The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Fifth Edition (WISC–V) is a valuable tool for assessing children and adolescents with learning disorders—and Intelligent Testing with the WISC–V offers the comprehensive guidance you need to administer, score, and interpret WISC–V profiles for informing diagnoses and making meaningful educational recommendations. This essential resource provides you with cutting-edge expertise on how to interpret the WISC–V, which has an expanded test structure, additional subtests, and an array of new composites. Intelligent Testing offers valuable advice from experienced professionals with regard to clinically applying the WISC–V in an effort to understand a child's strengths and weaknesses—and to create a targeted, appropriate intervention plan. Ultimately, this book equips you with the information you need to identify the best theory-based methods for interpreting each child's profile of test scores within the context of his or her background and behaviors. Intelligent Testing provides a strong theoretical basis for interpreting the WISC–V from several vantage points, such as neuropsychological processing theory and the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) model, yet it permits you to interpret children's profiles using simple, straightforward steps. The most frequently used IQ test in the world, the WISC–V (like previous versions of the WISC) plays an integral role in evaluating children for learning and intellectual disabilities, developmental and language delays, and gifted and talented classifications. As such, understanding how to use the latest version of WISC is extremely important when assessing children and adolescents ages 6 to 16 years. Explore all aspects of both the conventional WISC–V and WISC–V Digital Read objective, independent test reviews of the WISC–V from independent, highly-respected expert sources Review 17 clinical case reports that spotlight experiences of children and adolescents referred to psychologists for diverse reasons such as reading problems, specific learning disabilities, ADHD, intellectual giftedness, and autistic spectrum disorders Learn how a broad-based, multi-faceted approach to interpretation that calls upon several scientific concepts from the fields of cognitive neuroscience, clinical and school neuropsychology, neuropsychological processing, and the CHC model, can benefit children by providing meaningful recommendations to parents, teachers, and often to the children and adolescents themselves Use the results of WISC–V as a helping agent to assist in creating the best intervention plan, rather than allowing test results to dictate placement or labeling Intelligent Testing with the WISC–V is an indispensable resource for professionals who work with the WISC–V, including school psychologists, clinical psychologists, educational diagnosticians, and more.
