Abstract: While much is known about the achievement of high ability students, much less research has focused on their lower ability peers. In addition, although academic self-concept, locus of control and learning approaches have been demonstrated to be important personal variables that influence learning outcomes, less effort has been made to integrate these variables simultaneously to understand the complexity of low-achievement. The present research aimed to not only identify key causes of the low-achievement of academically disadvantaged students, but also provide appropriate and productive enhancement approaches to foster low-achieving students'' school success by conducting a pioneering longitudinal experimental study particularly in mainland China. The participants were low-achieving junior secondary students who had recently enrolled in Secondary Vocational Education (SVE) in mainland China (total N = 724). It was found that compared with normal- and high-achieving students in mainstream secondary education, students in SVE were characterized with less achieving motives, less internal-oriented control beliefs and particularly lower academic self-concepts. In addition, the academic self-concept of SVE students was found to be the most significant predictor of their academic achievement (p< .001) compared with achieving approach (p< .05) and locus of control (p> .05). These findings, in light of the 3P learning model, revealed the likely major role of academic self-concept in affecting academic achievement among adolescent students in SVE. In particular, Study 2, a comparative study, confirmed that vocational students had the lowest English self-concept of the groups studied. Hence, the focus of Study 3 (a longitudinal intervention) was on English self-concept. By incorporating recent advances in Western feedback enhancement approaches and the construct-validity approach to fully explore the intervention effects, Study 3 demonstrated that the researcher-administered treatments (performance feedback and combined feedback) in natural classroom settings successfully enhanced participants'' English self-concept, the targeted facet. Importantly, both the competence and affect components within the English self-concept of targeted students also gained statistically significant improvements from the two feedback treatments, compared with those of students who received no particular treatment. An interesting finding was that the two feedback treatments appeared similarly significant in changing the competence component of English self-concept. However, the internally-focused performance feedback was less effective in changing the affect component of English self-concept compared with the combined feedback. Non-significant transfer effects were found on untargeted facets of academic self-concept among participants receiving only the performance feedback. A slightly significant transfer effect was found on Chinese self-concept (one control facet) among participants receiving the combined feedback, indicating the power of the combined feedback to influence a facet that is closely related to the targeted facet. The present findings provided important cross-cultural empirical evidence to support sound within-network validity of the feedback intervention in a vocational setting. Impressively, the English achievements of st

Section I: presents the background of the study and introduces the topic along with relevant related aspects Section II: discusses Academic Performance and Self-Perception among students and the relationship between these two facets of students' academic life Section III: presents the reciprocal relationship between Academic Self-Concept and Academic Achievement among students Section IV: deals with self-perceptions of personal agency such as Self-Efficacy and SelfRegulation and its influence on students' Academic Performance Section V: presents the self-regulation strategies used in this study such as Goal Setting, Mindfulness Practice and Cognitive Instructional Strategy using Graphic Organizers Section VI: outlines the theoretical backdrop of learning processes and academic achievement Section VII: outlines the conceptual frame work and the need for the present study highlighting the key objectives. Section I: Background of the study The Indian school education system in the last few decades has gone on to make their mark in diverse fields of national and international life. There are diverse aspects of our educational system, particularly the school system that are lacking to make a significant impact. It is characterized by inflexibility where learning is unconnected with the students' 2 life and this in turn has led to the neglect of students' present abilities and increase in their difficulties (NCERT, 2006). The National focus Group of the NCERT (2006) further points out that the Indian School Education System is a monolithic system that has resulted in a set of practices for the development of curriculum, syllabus and textbooks rather focused on the requirements of the examination system than the child's learning requirement, aims of education and the socioeconomic and cultural contexts of learners. It further highlights the fact that educational practices in school are a dull routine, characterized by bored teachers and students, and a rote system of learning. Performance in academics requires all aspects of the students' wellbeing such as psychological behavioral, emotional, physical and social. Students who are physically and psychologically stable and strong tend to perform better when compared to those who are not. In other words, those who are experiencing psychological problems face difficulties in their academic performance. Hence, psychological stability turns out to be an important predictor of high academic achievement. Understanding aspects of the self, particularly of students who are low achievers is critical, due to the large number of children who are left behind and the social ramifications that result from poor education. In a country like India, with a population over a billion, the demand the school going population places on the limited resources, government policies and the type of delivery all gain special significance when the students' academic life and career is taken into consideration. With a huge demand of good quality education and delivery that the school going population places on the government and private players, it is quite possible that students, who fail, fall back. It is all the more so, if students have difficulties in learning. It is therefore imperative and of critical importance to have a clear understanding of the barriers that impact students' education so that successful school based interventions can be,

A convenient sample of 712 primary students ranging from primary 4 to 6 responded to the survey questionnaire. Children Hope Scale (CHS; Snyder, Hoza et al., 1997), Self-descriptive Questionnaire 1 (SDQ 1; Marsh, 1988) and Academic Achievement Score (AAS) were used to study hope and its relationships with self-concept and academic achievement. One-way ANOVA analysis, correlation analysis, univariate tests, post hoc test and multiple regression analysis were conducted to examine hope among Chinese primary students and its relationships to self-esteem and academic achievement. The findings showed that female students statistically excelled male students in the CHS, SDQ 1 and AAS scores. More importantly, the findings indicated there was gender difference in hope among Chinese children. It questioned previous finding that there was no gender difference in the CHS. This contradictory finding implies that cultural factor plays a role in children's hope. Second, although CHS was successful in predicting academic achievement, the amount of the variance they explained was very small. Pathway failed to predict unique variance of academic achievement. These findings imply that cultural difference in attributing success may exist. Third, academic self-esteem was proven more powerful than CHS in predicting students' academic achievement. IIIImplications for research and practice in developmental guidance were discussed.
