Therefore, a majority of population will return to a community college for retraining and personal growth (McCabe, 2003). Since the turn of this century, many studies have been conducted to examine the success and challenges of the relatively new community college system. One of the most significant challenges is the large percentage of the U.S. population requiring remedial coursework. Fifty-five percent of students entering Florida's postsecondary system require remediation. Of this large remedial population, only 51% will complete their preparatory classes. Students who do complete classes take an average of two years to finish preparatory classes and move on to college-level work. It is hypothesized that learning styles information will empower students with knowledge about their study habits and positively effect academic achievement. This research first examined the quantitative effect that learning styles information had on student achievement. The second qualitative phase of the study examined students' perceptions of learning styles information. Three Introductory Algebra (MAT 0024) courses at a large suburban community college were intensively studied during one spring semester. Due to the size of the study (N=69), results obtained in the quantitative portion were not significant enough to accept the hypotheses. Responses in focus groups showed that students generally felt that learning styles information was useful and half the class used the information to modify how they studied. Half of the students in the control group modified their study habits in response to knowing more about their learning style. Although the qualitative data was supportive of the usefulness of learning styles information in the classroom the quantitative data did not support the hypotheses that learning styles information improves achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant relationship between learning styles and student learning outcomes in an online college mathematics course. Specifically, the study was guided by two research questions focused on (a) the extent to which learning styles had a predictive relationship with student achievement in an online college mathematics course and (b) the extent to which various learning styles among mathematics students in online versus face-to-face courses predicted mathematics achievement. The population for this study consisted of the 779 college mathematics and algebra (CMA) students who were enrolled in a private multimedia university located in the southeast. A total of 501 students were enrolled in the online class, i.e., the experimental group, and 278 students enrolled in the face-to-face class comprised the control group. All students completed (a) an initial assessment to control for current mathematics knowledge, (b) the online Grasha-Reichmann Student Learning Styles Scales (GRSLSS) Inventory, and (c) 20 questions selected from the NAEP Question Tool database. Hierarchical linear regressions were used to address both research questions. A series of ANCOVA tests were run to examine the presence of any relationships between a given demographic and course modality when describing differences between student test scores while controlling for prior academic performance. The results indicated that predominant learning style had no apparent influence on mathematics achievement. The results also indicated that predominant learning style had no apparent influence on mathematics achievement for online students. When examining demographics alone without respect to modality, there was no significance in course performance between students in various ethnicity, gender, or age groups.

Book excerpt: Abstract:Little research has been conducted that examines the learning style and personality type preferences of Extension Community Development Educators. This descriptive correlational study examines the relationship between learning style and personality type preferences of Extension Community Development program professionals in Ohio. In addition, the study explores the presence of relationships of learning style and personality type preferences to primary work assignment, length of tenure, academic major, educational attainment, age, and gender. More than 56 percent of the 67 Extension Community Development program professionals involved in this study favored a field dependent learning style, as measured by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT). The mean GEFT score for the sample was 10.40, below the national mean of 11.4. Females were more field dependent. Subjects with academic backgrounds in the physical sciences were more field independent. Subjects with longer tenure in Extension were more field dependent. Nearly 24 percent of study participants indicated a preference for the ISTJ personality type as measured by the Personal Style Inventory (PSI). Males were more than three times more likely to prefer gathering information using their senses (sensing). Twice the number of female subjects (18) preferred gathering information through use of their unconscious (intuition) over males (9). Males preferred reacting to information with logic (thinking). Females preferred reacting to information with personal reflection and consideration for others (feeling). There was a negligible level of association between learning style and personality type subscales. The GEFT and PSI were used to gather data from Ohio State University Extension Community Development program professionals that attended district-level program meetings, completed the instruments, and provided usable data. While study results were generalized only to those providing usable data, a sampling of non-respondents revealed that non-respondent characteristics did not vary significantly from the accessible population.
