Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Relations of the United States with Sweden" is author Knute Emil Carlson's doctoral thesis presented to the University of Pennsylvania. This book is a thorough examination of the relationship between the United States and a Scandinavian nation of significantly less global influence. Author Knute Carlson's study is a history of the relationship between Sweden and the United States. While the author's research examined the bond between the two nations up until the period of the First World War, this text presents only the early history of the nations. The work is focused on four major areas, each of which is dedicated a separate chapter. Part one examines the negotiations between the two nations to establish a free trade port in St. Bartholomew as early as 1784. Part two details a proposed alliance of neutral states during the Napoleonic Wars that was instigated by Sweden. The third chapter looks at the Straslund Claims and further land arrangements between the two countries. Finally, part four details the commercial relationship of Sweden and the United States. The text concludes with a detailed bibliography. Knute Emil Carlson's work is a brief but interesting examination of the relationship between a developing world power and a nation that would have seemed quite distant during the eighteenth century. At the time of its original publication little research existed examining the relations between Sweden and the United States, and thus this work served to fill a gap in the literature. Modern students of history will certainly find Carlson's research to be a compelling read. "Relations of the United States with Sweden" is a well crafted dissertation. Carlson was clearly a keen student of history, and this book benefits greatly from his enthusiasm and passion for the subject. For students and scholars of U.S. history, particularly as it relates to the nation's relationship with other countries, the author's work remains a valuable read. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Has Sweden Done for the United States is a short title authored by Lars P. Nelson. This work provides a brief history of relations between the Scandinavian nation and the United States. Sweden and the U.S. are not two countries that are immediately thought to share a strong connection. While the two nations have long been friendly with one another, many individuals would have a difficult time naming one significant instance in which the countries directly worked together. The purpose of Nelson's book is thus to demonstrate that there is a long history of cooperation between Sweden and America. The book begins by examining the establishment of a trading company in Sweden that was authorized to work in what is now the United States. From there, the book examines early agreements between the two nations, Sweden's stance on the American Revolution, important diplomatic figures, and several more topics. At a mere thirty-eight pages, Nelson's overview merely scratches the surface of the subject matter. The author has managed to include a surprising amount of factual information into this title, however the essay reads more like a single chapter in a book than a fully realized work. The title is however a good starting point on the subject matter and will perhaps encourage readers to pursue further studies. The titular question posed by What Has Sweden Done for the United States? is indeed answered in Lars P. Nelson's book. For readers interested in a quick overview of the subject, or for those researching the topic but unsure where to begin, Nelson's work is a satisfying read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diplomatic Relations of the United States With Sweden and Norway, Vol. 7 At the time of the American Declaration of Independence Norway was governed as a province of Denmark, and remained under Danish domination until May 17, 1814, when she declared herself an independent kingdom to be governed by a constitu tional monarchy.1 By the treaty of Kiel, January 14, 1814, the allied powers had virtually granted Norway to Sweden in return for assistance against Napoleon,2 and as time wore on, it became increasingly evident that they would not recognize the complete independence of Norway. The Norwegian patriots were there fore glad to accept the ofier of Charles John Bernadette, Crown Prince of Sweden, to recognize the constitution of Norway on the condition that that kingdom should submit to a loose union with Sweden. By the act of November 4, 1814, the union was acknowl edged by the Norwegian Storthing.3 According to a Speech of the King to the Swedish Rigsdag, perfect equality was to obtain between the two kingdoms, but this perfect equality, was, nevertheless, not established in practice, as diplomacy and for eign affairs, as well as the representation of both kingdoms at for eign courts, remained in the hands of the Swedish Government. But this was a practice based on no express right, as no such privilege was granted Sweden by the Act of Union. 4 Our relations with Norway were, therefore, prior to 1814 bound up with our relations with Denmark, and between 1814 and 1905 they were conducted with Sweden and Norway as a unit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report Upon the Commercial Relations of the United States With Foreign Countries for the Year 1879, Vol. 2 During the current year there has been a considerable decrease in the import trade and in the duties paid into the treasury. Emigration - In consequence of the dull times here and the revival of business in America, emigration has again received an impulse. Up to this date persons have this year left this port for the United States. Lumber. - The staple of this district is lumber, of which England consumes the greater part. As at present the shipments of timber, con sist principally of very narrow boards, the price of which are quoted very low in London, there is no profit for Norwegian exporters. Railroads. - In July last a new railroad line, connecting Norway with Sweden, over Fredrikshald, was opened by the King. The first train crossing the frontier was drawn by one of the four American engines ordered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works at Philadelphia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norway and the Union With Sweden IN order to understand the differences, which, especially of late, have reached a critical point in the political relations between Norway and Sweden, it is necessary to know something of the earlier history of the two peoples, and the circumstances under which the Union between them came to be established and under which it has developed. The purpose of this little book is to give readers abroad, who know little about the early history of the Norwegians, a concise and authentic account of the most important circum stances and events, which, with almost logical con sistency, have led up to the present crisis. The book does not in any way claim to contain anything new or original. It treats of matters about which a great deal has been and will still be written. I have tried, rather, to the best of my ability to state everything on the basis of the most trustworthy and most recognised authorities, and have obtained the counsel and assistance of leading men of the most divergent general political views.
