Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurable properties of asphalts that contribute to the durability of pavements were tested. A Weissenberg rheogoniometer was chosen and modified to measure the rheological properties. An extensive laboratory testing program was made to determine the rheological and other physical and chemical properties of samples of asphalts used during the construction of a series of road sections. A field inspection of the 22 road sections provided information on pavement performance for use in the correlation with the laboratory data on the asphalts.

Book excerpt: The central tenet of this paper is that a proper level of bearing capacity is essential to good asphalt pavement performance. Methods for designing pavements with increased bearing capacity and methods for measuring this property are recommended. Since the bearing capacity of asphalt pavements is seldom determined, the fact is often overlooked that many pavement failures that are attributed to stripping, inferior asphalt quality, and inferior stone quality are actually structural failures due to inadequate bearing capacity. Increased truck tire pressures menace many pavements which were designed to traditional standards but which have bearing capacities too low to cope with the higher stresses. The only practical way to save these pavements from premature failure is to lower the stresses or tire pressures on them during hot weather.

It is essential to identify the rheological properties of the asphalt binder responsible for this type of distress. An asphalt durability research project began with the construction of six test pavements in Pennsylvania in September 1976 using AC-20 asphalt cements from different sources.

Book excerpt: This work deals with conventional and new relationships between various viscoelastic properties of road bitumen, determined under different test modes, such as constant stress, constant deformation or cyclic load. Approximate formulas have been derived for prediction of the rheological properties of asphalt based on its standard parameters such as penetration and softening point. The work is intended for researchers and engineers in road paving industry. It may be also of interest for teachers and Civil Engineering students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the research conducted for the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), a set of new testing methods to characterize the rheological, failure, and durability properties of asphalt binders has been developed. These methods utilize testing devices that are either completely new or have been used before only for research purposes. The methods also call for measuring mechanical response parameters that are not very common for asphalt pavement engineers nor for many asphalt producers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the following points: (1) The viscoelastic nature of asphalts and its relation to pavement performance; (2) the types of conventional measurements that are used now and the fundamental problems with them; (3) the concept behind selecting the new test methods and the new characteristic properties; and (4) how the new measured properties compare to the conventional properties. The paper addresses these points by providing theoretical-conceptual background about the conventional and new tests and by comparing new and conventional data measured for a large number of asphalts that vary in their source and their grade. The comparison clearly identifies the advantages of the new testing methods and the need to implement the proposed testing and specification system.

Book excerpt: Modeling techniques were employed to establish the relationship between the rheological properties (G* and ?) of asphalt binders and asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Results of this study indicate that the complex modulus and phase angle of the mixture can be represented by the same parameters obtained from the binder under the conditions of material linearity. This relationship is independent of frequency (or loading time) and temperature. For typical dense graded asphalt mixtures, the relationship is not significantly affected by the characteristics of both the asphalt binder and the aggregate. The relationship between the complex moduli of the asphalt binder and mixture can be mathematically modeled by the generalized power function. This function is more precise than the Heukelom and Klomp model (HK expression) and bilogarithm linear model (BL approximation), particularly at low and high modulus values. The generalized power function can differentiate asphalt binder as a viscoelastic liquid and asphalt mixture as a viscoelastic solid under the action of shear loading. The relationship of the phase angles, as an integrated part of rheological property of a viscoelastic material, between asphalt binders and mixtures can be modeled by a modified haversine function. This function completes the modeling of rheological properties as a whole for the first time and also reflects the fundamental material difference between the binder and the mixture in viscoelastic theory. Characterizing the asphalt mixture properties through the binder properties not only can save tremendous efforts in testing an asphalt mixture, but also can simplify the pavement performance prediction.
