Book Synopsis Abraham in the New Testament by : John Eifion Morgan-Wynne
Download or read book Abraham in the New Testament written by John Eifion Morgan-Wynne and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, John Morgan-Wynne examines the very different ways in which Paul’s epistles, Hebrews, James, Luke-Acts, John’s Gospel, and Matthew’s Gospel utitiize the critical figure of Abraham, the father of the people of Israel. He explores the question of the extent to which various New Testament authors developed something already present in the tradition and the extent to which they molded their depiction of Abraham to suit their own purposes in novel and creative ways. The book also considers how the diverse New Testament depictions and interpretations of the patriarch affect the preaching of the Abrahamic tradition today.
Book Synopsis Eschatology in Galatians by : Yon-Gyong Kwon
Download or read book Eschatology in Galatians written by Yon-Gyong Kwon and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2004 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Paul's own statement about the Galatian crisis, Yon Kwon demonstrates that the letter is about Paul's pastoral engagement with the backsliding Galatians rather than his theological altercation with his opponents. Paul deals with the crisis in Galatia by reminding the Galatians of the implications of their present deviation for their future - the 'not yet' -, instead of affirming the blessings already realized in Christ by keeping in step with the Spirit - the 'already'.

Book Synopsis Abraham in the Old Testament and Early Judaism by : John Eifion Morgan-Wynne
Download or read book Abraham in the Old Testament and Early Judaism written by John Eifion Morgan-Wynne and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, John Morgan-Wynne carefully examines the pivotal figure of Abraham in the Old Testament and Early Judaism. Our earliest literary evidence concerning Abraham is the stream of tradition known as J, the so-called Yahwist source (ca tenth century BCE), and also the Elohist stream of tradition (ninth to eighth century, or perhaps earlier). The subsequent eclipse of the Abrahamic tradition in the south is probably accounted for by the stress on the Davidic monarchy. However, Abraham's profile begins to rise again during and after the Babylonian exile when Jewish theologians had to come to terms with the traumatic events of the fall of the northern and southern kingdoms. He is frequently discussed in many non-canonical, early Jewish writings as he became a figure of identification, a pre-eminently righteous man, and an example to imitate, as Jews came to terms with being a subject people and with persecution.
Book Synopsis The Justification of God by : John Piper

Book excerpt: John Piper presents a careful, reasoned study of the doctrine of election. He dissects Paul's argument to highlight the picture of God and his righteousness painted in Romans 9. Undergirded by his belief that the sovereignty of God is too precious a part of our faith to dismiss or approach weak-kneed, Piper explores the Greek text and Paul's argument with singular deftness.

Book Synopsis Paul and the Creation of Christian Identity by : William S. Campbell
Download or read book Paul and the Creation of Christian Identity written by William S. Campbell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-03 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dominant interpretation of the Antioch incident Paul is viewed as separating from Peter and Jewish Christianity to lead his own independent mission which was eventually to triumph in the creation of a church with a gentile identity. Paul's gentile mission, however, represented only one strand of the Christ movement but has been universalized to signify the whole. The consequence of this view of Paul is that the earliest diversity in which he operated and which he affirmed has been anachronistically diminished almost to the point of obliteration. There is little recognition of the Jewish form of Christianity and that Paul by and large related positively to it as evidenced in Romans 14-15. Here Paul acknowledges Jewish identity as an abiding reality rather than as a temporary and weak form of faith in Christ. This book argues that diversity in Christ was fundamental to Paul and that particularly in his ethical guidance this received recognition. Paul's relation to Judaism is best understood not as a reaction to his former faith but as a transformation resulting from his vision of Christ. In this the past is not obliterated but transformed and thus continuity is maintained so that the identity of Christianity is neither that of a new religion nor of a Jesus cult. In Christ the past is reconfigured and thus the diversity of humanity continues within the church, which can celebrate the richness of differing identities under the Lordship of Christ.
Book Synopsis Paul and the Law (2nd Edition) by : Heikki Raisanen
Download or read book Paul and the Law (2nd Edition) written by Heikki Raisanen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Anyone who has studied Paul knows that probably the most complex problem he develops is his view of the law and its purpose. The beauty of Raisanen's work is that he recognizes and respects this complexity without himself becoming too dense to understand. Raisanen finds that Paul's radicalized, negative criticism of the law is peculiar to him, unparalleled in the NT and without precedent in Jewish thought. With careful, patient examination of various contexts, Raisanen leads his readers to see that Paul has an oscillating, even inconsistent view of the law. . . . This book is well-written in clear, readable English. It is an important book, recommended to any serious student of Paul. Its strength is in Raisanen's willingness to abandon preconceptions of what Paul's view on the law should be according to some consistent plan and in allowing Paul to speak for himself."" -- Mary Ann Getty in The Catholic Biblical Quarterly, 1985, No. 47
Book Synopsis Q and the History of Early Christianity by : Christopher M. Tuckett
Download or read book Q and the History of Early Christianity written by Christopher M. Tuckett and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging examination of the key issues in Q studies. After seeking to establish the existence of Q, Tuckett proceeds to analyze the characteristic features of the Q material. He explores not only what we can learn about the possible 'theology' of Q, but also what we can learn about the social situation of the Christians who valued and preserved this material. There are discussions of John the Baptist in Q, the eschatology and Christology of Q, along with the nature of the polemic in Q. Tuckett also attempts to determine how far Q is a wisdom text and how far it reflects Cynic ideas. This work will be of interest to all New Testament scholars and students interested in the Q tradition, the earliest history of Jesus traditions and early Christianity in general.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Medieval Europe 1 by : James Graham-Campbell
Download or read book The Archaeology of Medieval Europe 1 written by James Graham-Campbell and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of The Archaeology of Medieval Europe will together comprise the first complete account of medieval archaeology across Europe. Archaeologists from academic institutions in fifteen countries are collaborating to produce these two books of sixteen thematic chapters each. In addition, every chapter will feature a number of 'box-texts', by specialist contributors, highlighting sites or themes of particular importance. The books will be comprehensively illustrated throughout, in both colour and b/w, including line drawings and specially commissioned maps. This ground-breaking set, which is divided chronologically into two (Vol. 1 extending from the Eighth to Twelfth Centuries AD, and Vol. 2 from the Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries - to appear 2008), will enable readers to track the development of different cultures, and of regional characteristics, throughout the full extent of medieval Catholic Europe. In addition to revealing shared contexts and technological developments, the complete work will also provide the opportunity for demonstrating the differences that were inevitably present across the Continent - from Iceland to Italy, and from Portugal to Finland - and to study why such differences existed.
Download or read book Peter written by Robert H. Gundry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A STUNNING, PROVOCATIVE PERSPECTIVE ON THE DISCIPLE PETER AS DEPICTED BY MATTHEW ""In this highly controversial work on Peter, Robert Gundry's intellectual gifts and remarkable powers of analysis are displayed to an even higher degree than in his previous publications. . . One need not agree with Gundry's conclusions to acknowledge that the penetrating exegesis presented here and the nature of the argumentation as a whole demand serious reflection and engagement. Those who pay close attention to this brief but unusually weighty book will not be able to read Matthew in quite the same way that they did before."" --MOISES SILVA author of Biblical Words and Their Meaning ""Peter, long thought to be 'prince of the apostles' and one of the heroes of the Gospel of Matthew, is shown here to be neither. This extraordinarily closely argued volume by Robert Gundry offers a compelling case that Matthew constructs the figure of Peter as a failed disciple and an apostate. . . A courageous book that will require scholars to reassess how the Peter of Matthew came to be, in Gundry's words, 'airbrushed' and turned into a model of disciple and central figure in ecclesiastical memory."" --JOHN S. KLOPPENBORG University of Toronto ""If Bob Gundry is known for anything, it is for his dogged pursuit of the meaning of Scripture. Here he once again provides fresh, penetrating analysis--in the present case, leading to an unsettling conclusion. Provocative, as he can often be, Gundry is never boring but always instructive and well worth a careful reading."" --DONALD A. HAGNER Fuller Theological Seminary ROBERT H. GUNDRY is scholar-in-residence and professor emeritus of New Testament and Greek at Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California. His other books include A Survey of the New Testament (now in its fifth edition), Mark: A Commentary on His Apology for the Cross, and Matthew: A Commentary on His Handbook for a Mixed Church under Persecution.
