Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete Field Handbook Cement as it is received on the work, is well known as a fine, almost impalpable grayish powder. The one necessity, which on construction work becomes almost second nature, is to keep the cement dry in handling and storing. Portland Cement is an artificial mixture in certain well defined proportions established by practice, of lime, silica, alumina and other substances in minor quanti ties. Lime, mixed and calcined with clay, has the property of setting under water. A natural cement is made from rocky conglomerates which may contain the approximate quantities required, and which varies in its properties as the constituents of the natural de posits vary in proportion. Portland cement on the other hand is an exact artificial composition in pro portions determined by analysis and experiment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inspector's Handbook of Reinforced Concrete With the strides made in the past few years in the reinforced concrete building construction, the de mand for inspectors or clerks of the works having experience in this construction has been far greater than the supply. Those architects or engineers who have specialized in this construction have had applications from inspectors continually who wish to avail themselves of contact with this work under the direction of specialists. The authors' experience in selecting men to represent their firm in this capacity has led them to publish this little volume with the hope that it would fill a place in the literature on reinforced concrete not covered by existing books. Personal contact with the inspectors and their view point of various details of the work convince us of the necessity of such a book of instruction. While not endeavoring to inform the inspector of all his duties, this volume is written to point out the essentials gov erning the construction of this class of buildings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook on Reinforced Concrete: For Architects, Engineers, and Contractors The book is divided into four parts: Part I gives a general but concise resume of the subject from a practical standpoint, bringing out some of the difficulties met with in practice, and suggest ing remedies. Under Part II is compiled a series of tests justifying the use of various constants and coefficients in preparing the tables under Part III, as well as bearing out the theory of elasticity. Part III contains a series of tables from which it is hoped the designer may obtain all necessary information to meet the more common cases in practice. It was not intended to cover the more intricate designs, as this is a feature that requires considerable thought and time, both of which may be profitably applied. Part IV treats of the de sign of trussed roofs from a practical standpoint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kahn System Standards: A Handbook on Reinforced Concrete When, in the late 60s, Monier, a French gardener, began making flower pots, boxes and small water tanks out of concrete and imbedded wire in the material to increase its strength and decrease its weight and bulk, he little thought that forty years later the principle he employed would be used throughout the entire world in the erection of millions upon millions of dollar's worth of construction work. There has been no class of structures, no line of the building trades which has not been affected by reinforced concrete, and many ot them have been revolutionized. The story of the development and growth of the use of this form of construction has filled volumes, while here it can only be touched upon briefly. Concrete Defined Concrete is a rock-like substance formed by the mixture of cement, sand, stone and water. It is the result of the cementing together, through chemical action between the cement and water, of various sizes of stone so proportioned with the other material that all voids within the resulting mass are filled. Reinforced Concrete Defined Reinforced concrete is exactly what the name implies. It is concrete in which steel has been imbedded to give additional strength and elasticity. Plain concrete, when used in the form of pillars and posts, is capable of carrying heavy direct loads through its great compressive strength. But when it is subjected to a direct pull, that is, to tensile strains, it is weak. For example, if a plain concrete beam is subjected to a load it will break apart at the bottom just as a piece of chalk would under like conditions, being unable to resist the tension in the lower portion of the beam. In order to overcome this, reinforcing steel is used to give proper tensile strength and elasticity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Elementary Design As a guide to the selection of proper constants in design ing, much of the report of the Joint Committee is given without change, and frequent references to the same are made throughout the book. The nomenclature is, usually, made up of initials of the words indicated, and for this reason it was thought best to use St rather than f, for the tensile stress in the steel. In general, the nomenclature is that in common use. Several designs of reinforced concrete structures are worked out in detail with particular reference to the proper sequence of computation. The principles of economy in design are set forth and the diagrams in use lead to the proper selection of steel and concrete dimensions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete IN the following pages the author has endeavoured to place before engineers, architects and others a complete treatment of the subject of reinforced concrete in so far as is possible at the present day. It is hoped that the book, which is believed to be the first of the kind to appear in the English language, will be found useful by the many engineers and architects who already take an interest in this form of construction, and who wish to investigate it, and that it may also be the means of bringing to the notice of others a material whose usefulness and economy in suitable cases are beyond dispute. All the subject matter has been so arranged as to facilitate reference as much as possible. The several systems used up to the present have been placed in alphabetical order, so that any particular one may be readily found when desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete, Theory and Practice Much has been written upon the subject of reinforced concrete, and the design of structures in this material no doubt still affords opportunity for invention and improve ment. New systems, new bars, new details of various kinds are constantly being patented in many countries, but the leading features and ideas remain the same. Generally speaking, one may say that there are as many systems as there are specialists, each naturally insisting upon the superiority of his own favourite ideas.
