Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete Field Handbook Cement as it is received on the work, is well known as a fine, almost impalpable grayish powder. The one necessity, which on construction work becomes almost second nature, is to keep the cement dry in handling and storing. Portland Cement is an artificial mixture in certain well defined proportions established by practice, of lime, silica, alumina and other substances in minor quanti ties. Lime, mixed and calcined with clay, has the property of setting under water. A natural cement is made from rocky conglomerates which may contain the approximate quantities required, and which varies in its properties as the constituents of the natural de posits vary in proportion. Portland cement on the other hand is an exact artificial composition in pro portions determined by analysis and experiment. Book Synopsis Design of Concrete Structures with Stress Fields by : Aurello Muttoni
Download or read book Design of Concrete Structures with Stress Fields written by Aurello Muttoni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 17 2 STRESS FIELDS FOR SIMPLE STRUCTURES 2. 1 INTRODUCTION In this chapter the behavior and strength of simple structures made of rein forced or prestressed concrete is investigated with the aid of stress fields. In particular, the webs and flanges of beams, simple walls, brackets, bracing beams and joints of frames are investigated. By this means, the majority of design cases are already covered. In reality, all structural components are three-dimensional. Here, however, components are considered either directly as two-dimensional plate elements (i. e. the plane stress condition with no variation of stress over the thickness of the element) or they are subdivided into several plates. Since two-dimensional structural elements are statically redundant, it is pOSSible for a particular loading to be in equilibrium with many (theoretically an infinite number of) stress states. If the lower bound method of the theory of plasticity is employed, then an admissible stress field or any combination of such stress fields may be selected. In chapter 4 it is shown that this method is suitable for the design of reinforced concrete structures, and the consequence of the choice of the final structural system on the structural behavior is dealt with in detail. The first cases of the use of this method date back to Ritter [6] and Morsch [4], who already at the beginning of the century investigated the resultants of the internal stresses by means of truss models.

Book Synopsis Reinforced Concrete and the Modernization of American Building, 1900-1930 by : Amy E. Slaton
Download or read book Reinforced Concrete and the Modernization of American Building, 1900-1930 written by Amy E. Slaton and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the proliferation of reinforced-concrete construction in the United States after 1900, historian Amy E. Slaton considers how scientific approaches and occupations displaced traditionally skilled labor. The technology of concrete buildings—little studied by historians of engineering, architecture, or industry—offers a remarkable case study in the modernization of American production. The use of concrete brought to construction the new procedures and priorities of mass production. These included a comprehensive application of science to commercial enterprise and vast redistributions of skills, opportunities, credit, and risk in the workplace. Reinforced concrete also changed the American landscape as building buyers embraced the architectural uniformity and simplicity to which the technology was best suited. Based on a wealth of data that includes university curricula, laboratory and company records, organizational proceedings, blueprints, and promotional materials as well as a rich body of physical evidence such as tools, instruments, building materials, and surviving reinforced-concrete buildings, this book tests the thesis that modern mass production in the United States came about not simply in answer to manufacturers' search for profits, but as a result of a complex of occupational and cultural agendas.

This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete as a construction material goes through both physical and chemical changes under extreme elevated temperatures. As one of the most widely used building materials, it is important that both engineers and architects are able to understand and predict its behavior in under extreme heat conditions. Brief and readable, this book provides the tools and techniques to properly analysis the effects of high temperature of reinforced concrete which will lead to more stable, safer structures. Based on years of the author’s research, Reinforced Concrete at Elevated Temperatures four part treatment starts with an unambiguous and thorough exposition of the mechanical behaviors of materials at elevated temperature followed by a discussion of Temperature field of member sections, Mechanical behaviors of members and structures at elevated temperature, ending with Theoretical analysis and practical calculation methods. The book provides unique insight into: Coupling thermal-mechanical constitutive relation of concrete Exceptional analyses of beams and columns of rectangular section with three surfaces and two adjacent surfaces exposing to high temperature Measurement and analysis of redistribution of internal forces of statically indeterminate structure during heating-loading process Finite element analysis and calculation charts for two-dimensional temperature field of structural members Finite element analysis and simplified calculation method for reinforced concrete structure at elevated temperature With this book, engineers and architects can effectively analyze the effect of high temperature on concrete and materials which will lead to better designs of fire resistant and damage evaluation and treatment after fire. Tools and techniques for analyzing the effects of high temperature on concrete and reinforcement materials Measurement and analysis of redistribution of internal forces of statically indeterminate structure during the heating-loading process Finite element analysis and calculation charts for two-dimensional temperature field of structural members Finite element analysis and simplified calculation method for reinforced concrete structure at elevated temperature
