Book excerpt: This guide is intended for use by architects, engineers, contractors, building officials, and manufacturers. Its purpose is to present, in a single source, information that can help those individuals design, specify, and construct with factory-reinforced panels of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC). In this guide, introductory information on AAC is first presented, followed by a description of its manufacture, guidance on structural design using reinforced panels, and guidance on construction with such panels. The body of this guide ends with an extensive background chapter on the material characteristics of AAC, and the structural behavior and design of AAC elements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large format, print editons of this book, with full colour photos ilustrating the text descriptions, can be purchased at www.mybestseller.co.uk/M.Keating This is the story of our house build in Germany. This book is intended as a birds-eye view of the work, not a guide to absolutely everything involved with the process. I wrote it is to inform you, the prospective self-builder, on the work involved, in order to help you decide whether this is something you feel you could do yourself. It will not be physically possible to do absolutely everything by yourself, you will still occasionally need a helper or two and the building process may vary slightly in other countries due to availability of specific materials, but the basic procedures in the book remain valid. When we signed the contract for our building materials we were given a German book on self-building with AAC. I didn't speak German and could not find an appropriate English language book, so I decided to photo-document our entire construction process and write a book on it. Many of these photos are included in this book to aid to full comprehsion of the house build (there are no photos in the e-book).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excessive deflections and cracking have been identified in a number of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) roof planks and there is evidence of initiation of reinforcement corrosion. However, there is no evidence so far to suggest that RAAC planks pose a safety hazard to building users. This paper describes the difficulties experienced in service with RAAC roof planks designed before 1980. It gives guidance on their identification and initial assessment in buildings. It suggests that roofs incorporating RAAC planks, that were designed before 1980, are inspect6ed and their condition assessed. Although no specific examples of excessive deflections of floors have been reported, it may be wise to inspect RAAC components within floors. This paper does not apply to beam and block floors and walls which contain autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks in their construction or to any other AAC components.

Book excerpt: This chapter discusses design for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)/autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) sandwich panels for structural applications. The chapter first presents the finite element analysis (FE) of FRP/AAC panels. The FE results are compared with the experimental results showing acceptable agreement. Next, analytical models are presented to predict the deflection and strength of the panels. Finally, design graphs have been developed to help in designing the floor and wall panels made from FRP/AAC panels. Also, those panels have been compared to the commercially used reinforced AAC panels demonstrating that FRP/AAC panels offer a relatively cost-effective solution for longer life cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a multi-disciplinary research on a number of material and structural characteristics of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete or AAC. AAC is claimed to have favorable construction, structural and environmental qualities, with great potential to becoming a more commonly used building material; it is light weight, non-combustible, resource efficient, and has acoustic isolating and thermal insulating properties. These characteristics affect different aspects of a construction project, in terms of cost, workability, time, carbon footprint and more. The purpose of this research is to study AAC as a building material to potentially substitute wood or conventional CMU for low-rise residential buildings in Southern California. The book concludes that AAC possesses desirable characteristics, such as light weigh, and higher R-value in comparison with other building materials, and some undesirable characteristics, such as lower shear strength in comparison to conventional reinforced CMU. Taking into account the findings of this book, AAC has unique qualities and potentials worth considering, depending on the requirements of any particular project.
