Book excerpt: Examining human-animal relations among the reindeer hunting and herding Dukha community in northern Mongolia, this book focuses on concepts such as domestication and wildness from an indigenous perspective. By looking into hunting rituals and herding techniques, the ethnography questions the dynamics between people, domesticated reindeer, and wild animals. It focuses on the role of the spirited landscape which embraces all living creatures and acts as a unifying concept at the center of the human and non-human relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive presentation of health and diseases in reindeer and caribou, or just Rangifer, a key Circumarctic species with broad social and ecological value. It is an essential reference for anyone interested in the biology and health of wild or semi-domesticated reindeer and caribou, and is more broadly relevant for those with interests in other species of free-ranging and captive cervids. Beginning with a general introduction to Rangifer as a species, it then focuses on Rangifer "health" as a concept and describes the determinants of health at an individual and population level. Chapters cover a range of topics from nutrition and feeding to stress, non-infectious and infectious diseases, meat hygiene, capture and restraint, diagnosis and treatment of health issues, and finally, potential impacts of climate change on health of Rangifer. Reindeer and Caribou: Health and Disease compiles extensive research and experience-based information on issues ranging from drug doses for chemical immobilization, blood chemistry values, and raising an orphaned calf. In addition, it contains hundreds of high quality colour illustrations that contribute to its value as a diagnostic resource for recognizing various parasites, pathogens and signs of disease, both in live and dead animals. Each chapter is followed by a comprehensive list of references and a list of contact information for all the contributors, identifying world experts in the different areas of health for this circumpolar and fascinating species. This book is compulsory reading and an indispensable resource for anyone dealing with health in reindeer and caribou, including veterinarians, wildlife biologists and managers, reindeer herders/game ranchers, zoological husbandry personnel, and students with wildlife health.

One can almost taste the camp grub he describes, whether prepared for or by him, smell the scents of the hunting camps and cabins and feel the bitter cold of the 1992 fall hunt or the Delta sheep hunt snowstorm. The descriptions of his many hunting experiences make the reader feel like they were there with him in the wild or on a flight to the next adventure. I can't wait for the sequel! Mike Fleagle, Former Chairman - Alaska Board of Game Pete Buist is undoubtedly the epitome of the outdoorsman in the truest meaning of the term. Trapper, hunter, master guide, firefighter are just some of his accomplishments; in a nutshell, a lifetime of adventure and excitement lived in the manner that makes me envious and at the same time filled with admiration. While guiding Pete in South Africa, it did cross my mind that I would have relished doing a hunt with our roles reversed and basking in the experience of a life well-lived. Pete Tumkulu "Buist has applied his knowledge, experience, and eloquence to add the title of Author to his other accomplishments and has produced a well-written, enjoyable read capable of transporting the reader to those wild places. John" Madala" Barnes Professional Hunter - South Africa The real "trophies" of a life spent outdoors are the stories. Indeed, storytelling is a foundational skill of the seasoned hunter, and Pete's "seasoning" reaches into a stratosphere most of us will never see. I became friends with Pete in 2008, and after only a couple of days of immersing myself in his storytelling prowess, I said, "Pete, you really need to write a book." And here it is. Pete's recall, precise detail, wit, and humor are extraordinary as he takes you along on countless adventures. These entertaining stories are definitely worth the price of admission. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denésuliné hunters range from deep in the Boreal Forest far into the tundra of northern Canada. Henry S. Sharp, a social anthropologist and ethnographer, spent several decades participating in fieldwork and observing hunts by this extended kin group. His daughter, Karyn Sharp, who is an archaeologist specializing in First Nations Studies and is Denésuliné, also observed countless hunts. Over the years the father and daughter realized that not only their personal backgrounds but also their disciplinary specializations significantly affected how each perceived and understood their experiences with the Denésuliné. In Hunting Caribou, Henry and Karyn Sharp attempt to understand and interpret their decades-long observations of Denésuliné hunts through the multiple disciplinary lenses of anthropology, archaeology, and ethnology. Although questions and methodologies differ between disciplines, the Sharps’ ethnography, by connecting these components, provides unique insights into the ecology and motivations of hunting societies. Themes of gender, women’s labor, insects, wolf and caribou behavior, scale, mobility and transportation, and land use are linked through the authors’ personal voice and experiences. This participant ethnography makes an important contribution to multiple fields in academe while simultaneously revealing broad implications for research, public policy, and First Nations politics.
