In an environment where everything has to be fabulously grotesque, extravagantly diverse, intensely scary, or extremely marginal, what should 21st-century discipleship look like? All of us have our conceptualizations of the good old days and the "old-time religion" of the past. At the same time, we must be mindful that societal norms are changing all the time, and as they shift, so do the needs and expectations of those who are hungry for a word of hope. Not only are God's people hungry, but they are also curious about how to survive when things are topsy turvy. As disciples, we must be in a position to provide new answers to old questions - all based on the word of God. That might involve looking at the world through new lenses. For these reasons, modern-day disciples continually discern new ways to reach out boldly to those in need of hope. Some people might say disciples should do "whatever it takes" to feed God's wonderfully amazing variety of sheep. But caution is in order. Taking our cues from the medical profession, no matter what approach we deploy, in the body of Christ we must "first, do no harm." When we think about this Hippocratic Oath, part of the Code of Ethics in the medical profession, we ask this question: Shouldn't disciples also have such a code? We are obligated to develop a critical awareness of the impact of what we do on the outcomes we desire and the people we serve. The reality is that we must be accountable for our choices and ensure the integrity of our approaches to discipleship. As 21st-century disciples, we are responsible for planning our efforts systematically and carefully to reach an audience that spans millions of miles and seven continents. The Internet provides a promising approach to achieving this goal.

I have been a Christian most of my life, since I was a small child. I grew up in a lower middle class home in Billerica, Massachusetts. My parents were very strict Christian people. Being the oldest of four children, my upbringing in the 1960 s and 70 s was very strict by today s standards. Being naive to the many things of the world, I made a lot of mistakes. I have been through 5 divorces. One was of my choosing the others were filed by my ex-spouses. I was not an abusive man, but certainly principled. I certainly learned (very slowly), God s way isn t compromising. I graduated High School in Billerica, MA in 1981. After one year of college with no direction, I joined the Marine Corps Reserve, and went to Parris Island, Marine Corps boot camp, in the summer of 1982. That fall I went back to college as an undeclared major, and discovered I had no idea what I wanted to do. I left college in spring of 1983 and worked full time, running a carwash, until finally becoming a full time Police Officer in 1987, in Durham, NH. I have spent a total of almost 10 years in law enforcement, 7 years in the Marine Corps reserves, 20 years as an optician, and the list goes on. I have been a deacon in a church, Sunday school teacher, a life group leader, life group leader coach, and ordained minister. I am presently married to the sixth and final Mrs Hilpert, who truly is the most amazing wife I could have asked for. God definitely worked a miracle for me to have been blessed with her at this stage of my life.

Book excerpt: This book examines the factors that facilitate the inclusion of women on high courts, while recognizing that many courts have a long way to go before reaching gender parity. Why did women start appearing on high courts when they did? Where have women made the most significant strides? To address these questions, the authors built the first cross-national and longitudinal dataset on the appointment of women and men to high courts. In addition, they provide five in-depth country case studies us to unpack the selection of justices to high courts in Canada, Colombia, Ireland, South Africa, and the United States. The cross-national lens and combination of quantitative analyses and detailed country studies examines multiple influences across region and time. Focusing on three sets of explanations —pipelines to high courts, domestic institutions, and international influences- analyses reveal that women are more likely to first appear on their country's high court when traditional ideas about who can and should be a judge erode. In some countries, international treaties, regional emulation, and women's international NGOs play a role in disseminating and linking global norms of gender equality in decision-making. Importantly, while informal institutions and reliance on men-dominated networks can limit access, women are making substantial strides in their countries' highest courts where the supply grows, and often where selectors have incentives to select women. Further, sustained pressure from advocacy organizations-at the local, national, and global levels-contributes to some gains.
