This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BackgroundFor decades in-patient rehabilitation has been and still is a constituent component within the individualised guidance concept of patients with RA. Because of significantly improved drug therapy over the recent years, priorities and objectives of stationary rehabilitation of RA-patients have changed. Which patients will benefit the most of an in-house rehabilitation and treatment?MethodWith consent of the members of the Austrian Rehabilitation Task Force a mailing containing a survey was sent out to all of them (n=12, mainly Medical Directors in medical rehabilitation centres). The survey had been taken using standardized questions to find out which patients would profit and gain benefits from an in-house rehabilitation. All the answers were merged in form and content to be ranked by significance within a meeting of the Task Force via voting.ResultsStationary rehabilitation is most beneficial to patients with 1. Functional deficits, 2. Training needs, 3. Jeopardized working ability, 4. Health care deficits because of distance to residence, 5. Short term disease, 6. Accompanying psychosocial stressors, 7. Inadequate or insufficient complianceDiscussionThe members of the Task Force do recommend a inpatient rehabilitation for each and every patient diagnosed with RA as soon as possible after finally stating the diagnosis for him/her to be provided with fundamental knowledge regarding their condition. Further in-house treatments should follow as the disease progresses u2013 especially if functional deficits increase or their working ability is jeopardized as a side effect of the illness. Individual concomitant factors such as comorbidities and general rehab-aptitude of the patient must be taken into consideration upon medical indication of treatment. There is a necessity for patients with high disease activity to optimize medication prior to stationary rehab. Patients with a lack of compliance should only have the opportunity for an in-house rehabilitation with pointing it out as a u201clast chanceu201d for change.A thorough and complete transmission of all relevant information will help secure a treatment quickly and focused on his/her needs.ConclusionEven in times of better and improved drug therapy patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis will profit from an in-house rehabilitation.Careful and targeted selection of patients with the appropriate timing within the progression of the disease can only be done after comprehensive analysis and evaluation of concomitant factors.

Book excerpt: This book clearly explains when and how different rehabilitation techniques should be applied in the aging patient, thereby enabling readers to identify and apply those rehabilitation strategies that will maximize quality of life and functional independence in individual cases. It is specifically designed for ease of consultation and rapid retrieval of the information most relevant to clinical practice. Prominence is given to the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation, with discussion of a very wide range of aspects of rehabilitation in different disease settings. The breadth of coverage is illustrated by the attention paid to less commonly addressed topics such as visual and hearing rehabilitation, the role of robotics and 3D imaging techniques, variations in approach among health care systems, and rehabilitation in end-of-life care. The authors are international academic experts in their fields, guaranteeing a high scientific standard throughout. This manual will be an invaluable tool and source of knowledge for geriatricians and physiatrists but will also appeal to a wider range of clinicians, practitioners, and students.

It details information on the effect of ageing on musculoskeletal and immune systems and specifies impact of a variety of inflammatory and degenerative rheumatic disorders on the elderly. The clinical diagnostic approach to an older individual with musculoskeletal complaints is a cornerstone of this book, which includes also insights into the most important comorbidities for this age and discusses in depth available treatments and rehabilitation tools. The symptoms, imaging features and recommendations on the interpretation of specific laboratory tests for rheumatic diseases in geriatrics are also covered. This book encompasses traditionally associated with older age conditions including temporal arteritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, osteoarthritis, as well as common systemic autoimmune diseases that can produce atypical manifestations in the elderly. It will enable the readers to develop a thorough understanding of how to deal with these patients in their clinical practice. Rheumatic Disease in Geriatrics: Diagnosis and Management systematically describes how to diagnose and treat geriatric patients with a variety of rheumatic conditions and is a valuable resource for all medical professionals involved.
