Book excerpt: This book is aimed at exploring the socioeconomic assessment of the project-affected people of the Tehri hydro project. The Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad, first conducted a socioeconomic study for the THDC in 1993, which aimed at the families to be rehabilitated and those already rehabilitated. The first socioeconomic study carried out a benchmark survey to evaluate the project and its impact and to build a socioeconomic profile of the households to understand the conditions before and after the R and R. The survey also documented the perceptions, views, and suggestions of the rehabilitated households. The present book is a follow up to the previous study, and it compares with the results of the first survey to understand any changes. The main aim of the book is to understand the socioeconomic conditions of the households rehabilitated and resettled up to the year 2008.

Book excerpt: One of the most controversial issues of the water sector in recent years has been the impacts of large dams. Proponents have claimed that such structures are essential to meet the increasing water demands of the world and that their overall societal benefits far outweight the costs. In contrast, the opponents claim that social and environmental costs of large dams far exceed their benefits, and that the era of construction of large dams is over. A major reason as to why there is no consensus on the overall benefits of large dams is because objective, authoritative and comprehensive evaluations of their impacts, especially ten or more years after their construction, are conspicuous by their absence. This book debates impartially, comprehensively and objectively, the positive and negative impacts of large dams based on facts, figures and authoritative analyses. These in-depth case studies are expected to promote a healthy and balanced debate on the needs, impacts and relevance of large dams, with case studies from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses ten issues pertaining to energy and the environment, such as climate change, fossil fuels, endangered species, and renewable energy, and examines how these issues are affecting countries around the world. In the industrial age, first powered by coal and then more often by oil, environmental degradation nearly inevitably followed resource exploitation and energy production. This book examines environmental issues in specific countries around the world as well as solutions some of these countries have discovered in order to help save the environment. This volume includes 10 chapters, each addressing a specific issue relating to energy and the environment as it pertains to a variety of countries, including toxic chemicals, pollution, deforestation, and climate change. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the issue. Following the chapter introduction, each chapter highlights that issue in eight countries and provides historic perspective. This work provides an overview for high school students and college students at the undergraduate level on 10 important topics that address matters relating to energy and the environment in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people actively engaged in India's water sector would deny that the Indian subcontinent faces serious problems in the sustainable use and management of water resources. Water resources in India have been subjected to tremendous pressures from increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, and modern agricultural methods. The inadequate access to clean drinking water, increase in water related disasters such as floods and droughts, vulnerability to climate change and competition for the resource amongst different sectors and the region poses immense pressures for sustainability of water systems and humanity. Water Security in India addresses these issues head on, analyzing the challenges that contemporary India faces if it is to create a water-secure world, and providing a hopeful, though guarded, road-map to a future in which India's life-giving and life-sustaining fresh water resources are safe, clean, plentiful, and available to all, secured for the people in a peaceful and ecologically sustainable manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am presenting this study on behalf of the millions and millions of citizens of India who eagerly are waiting to witness the transition from darkness to lightness. Many more cyber cities are the dreams of Indians. Politics Vs Economics , is the prime mover for any national development in the World. I believe every stakeholder is contributing to develop and sustain the Indian Power Sector within the limitations and restrictions of scope and availability. Policy, regulation, legislation , controls, monitoring, implementation, projects, institutions, structures, frameworks, services, finances, revenues, losses, profits, and so on are struggling to excel with infinite permutations and combinations. Research & Development (R&D) in India is not to be neglected in core sectors. R&D is a continual tool towards betterment of the complete supply chain of electricity supply. Ministry of New & Renewable Energy is taking initiatives to conduct solar training programmes. Power Consumption Vs Power Conservation, the balance can be made only by awareness , education and training programmes throughout the World. Energy is always a Global issue. Will Green Energy dominate the Power Sector in India? I believe, Learning by criticism brings in excellence. We all should thank this type of debate, discussions, brainstorming and analysis . It brings out innovations and refinement in thinking and decision making. The perception of constructive criticism should be to find avenues for strengthening the Indian Power System. I am grateful to all the analysts in the energy and power sector who have sacrificed their valuable time in researching and innovating better ways of improving the power systems in the world. I am equally indebted to the great scientists , educationists and reformists who have lived their lives to light the world. I am obliged to understand their pain in transforming the darkness of the world into lightness forever. I hope every reader should participate in saving electrical energy . This book, Energy Crisis in India, is a drive to alleviate the energy crisis. I sincerely request my readers and their associates to join me and the nation in saving energy . Finally from the bottom of my heart we will all remain indebted to the , People who Power the World..
