Book excerpt: This book was written by many outstanding investigators who have spent decades to study different aspects of blood‐tissue barrier function. They have summarized some of the latest and fascinating development in their fields of research including the blood‐brain barrier, the blood‐retinal barrier, the gut barrier, the blood‐biliary barrier, the blood‐follicle barrier, the blood‐epididymis barrier, the blood‐testis barrier, the tight junction barrier in general as well as barriers in the female reproductive tract. Included are also chapters that focus on topics that are physiologically applicable to all blood‐tissue barriers. Many of these chapters also include information on specific human diseases, such as pathological changes of the gut barrier that cause bowel disorders resulting from inflammation of the epithelial lining in the intestine, and infertility in men as a result of disruption of the blood‐epididymal and/or blood‐testis barriers; and on new therapeutic approaches (e.g., drug delivery across the blood‐brain and the blood‐retinal barriers).

Book excerpt: Rapid advances have taken place in various aspects of reproductive biology during the last decade. These advances have centered around several organ systems that comprise the reproductive system and encompass molecular events and structure-function relationships. It becomes important to review these advances in knowledge, at periodic intervals, with respect to feedback systems and regulatory loops that control reproductive processes in vivo. Towards this end, a workshop entitled "Functional Correlates of Hormone Receptors in Reproduction" sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health was held in October 1980. The proceedings of the workshop were published by Elsevier Biomedical/New York. This workshop was followed by two workshops sponsored by the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health entitled "Role of Peptides and Proteins in Control of Reproduction" in February 1982 and published by Elsevier Biomedical and "Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Reproduction" in October 1985 and published by Plenum Press. It was, therefore, timely to review the current state of knowledge regarding the regulation of ovarian and testicular function by bringing together scientists working in separate and discrete aspects of reproduction to review the functional implications of their research on the regulation of function within the same tissue and also in relationship to feedback systems and regulatory loops with other tissues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge of the physiology of the endocrine system and hormone synthesis and release, transport, and action at the molecular and cellular levels. It presents essential as well as in-depth information of value to both medical students and specialists in Endocrinology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. Although it is well established that the endocrine system regulates essential functions involved in growth, reproduction, and homeostasis, it is increasingly being recognized that this complex regulatory system comprises not only hormones secreted by the classic endocrine glands but also hormones and regulatory factors produced by many organs, and involves extensive crosstalk with the neural and immune system. At the same time, our knowledge of the molecular basis of hormone action has greatly improved. Understanding this complexity of endocrine physiology is crucial to prevent endocrine disorders, to improve the sensitivity of our diagnostic tools, and to provide the rationale for pharmacological, immunological, or genetic interventions. It is such understanding that this book is designed to foster.

This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By far the majority of women presenting with a breast complaint will be diagnosed as having a benign rather than malignant condition. Despite this, clinical and research interest has always favoured breast cancer, and few publications have attempted to cover benign breast disorders as an independent entity focusing instead on benign breast disease in relation to breast cancer and none provide the complete and pragmatic coverage found in this text.Hughes, Mansel and Webster's Benign Disorders and Diseases of the Breast represents the distillation of over 35 years of clinical experience and research in the Cardiff Clinic and is unique in its depth of coverage of the entire spectrum of benign breast complaints. The third edition of this critically acclaimed book provides practical and detailed management guidelines. Relevant investigations are discussed and clear advice is given for the most effective treatment strategies in each condition, including dealing with treatment failures and recurring problems. The underlying pathology and physiology are also discussed from the clinician's viewpoint to help understand clinical presentations and response to treatment.
