Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent surge of interest in recombinant DNA research is understandable considering that biologists from all disciplines, using recently developed mo lecular techniques, can now study with great precision the structure and regulation of specific genes. As a discipline, molecular biology is no longer a mere subspeciality of biology or biochemistry: it is the new biology. Current approaches to the outstanding problems in virtually all the traditional disci plines in biology are now being explored using the recombinant DNA tech nology. In this atmosphere of rapid progress, the role of information exchange and swift publication becomes quite crucial. Consequently, there has been an equally rapid proliferation of symposia volumes and review articles, apart from the explosion in popular science magazines and news media, which are always ready to simplify and sensationalize the implications of recent dis coveries, often before the scientific community has had the opportunity to fully scrutinize the developments. Since many of the recent findings in this field have practical implications, quite often the symposia in molecular biology are sponsored by private industry and are of specialized interest and in any case quite expensive for students to participate in. Given that George Wash ington University is a teaching institution, our aim in sponsoring these Annual Spring Symposia is to provide, at cost, a forum for students and experts to discuss the latest developments in selected areas of great significance in biology. Additionally, since the University is located in Washington, D. C.

Download or read book Eucaryotic Gene Regulation written by Richard Axel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eukaryotic Gene Regulation covers the aspects and mechanisms of gene regulation of selected eukaryotes, such as yeast, Drosophila, and insect. This book is organized into eight parts, encompassing 52 chapters. The majority of the chapters are presented in an experimental manner containing an abstract, methods, results and discussion, and conclusion. This book first gives a short overview of the evolutionary role of interspersion in eukaryotic genes. It then presents considerable chapters on control of gene expression in yeast; gene mutation and isolation; structure and function; and analysis. Part III focuses on genetic and DNA sequence analysis in Drosophila. It includes discussions on allelic complementation and transvection, genetic organization, histone gene, and gene transcription. Part IV examines cell lineage; gene expression and sequences; and protein synthesis of insects, sea urchin, and mammalian cells. This is followed by discussions on structure and expression of specific eukaryotic genes from chicken, rat, rabbit, and human. Topics on the transfer of genetic information within and between cells and the structure and function of chromosome are significantly considered in Parts VI and VII. Genes evaluated in these sections include heavy chain immunoglobulin, light chain, beta-globin, and dihydrofolate reductase. Furthermore, this book describes the in vitro transcription and the factors involved; internal organization and mechanism of assembly of nucleosome; and chromatin structure. The concluding section focuses on aspects of viral genome expression including gene regulation, synthesis, processing, and alternative RNA splicing. Research biologists, geneticists, scientists, teachers, and students will greatly benefit from this book.
Book Synopsis Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes by : Michael F. Carey
Download or read book Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes written by Michael F. Carey and published by CSHL Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the genome era, the analysis of gene expression has become a critical requirement in many laboratories. But there has been no comprehensive source of strategic, conceptual, and technical information to guide this often complex task. Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes answers that need. Written by two experienced investigators, Michael Carey and Stephen Smale at the UCLA School of Medicine, and based in part on the Gene Expression course taught at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, this book directly addresses all the concerns of a laboratory studying the regulation of a newly isolated gene and the biochemistry of a new transcription factor. This important and unique book is essential reading for anyone pursuing the analysis of gene expression in model systems or disease states.
Book Synopsis Untranslated Gene Regions and Other Non-coding Elements by : Lucy W. Barrett
Download or read book Untranslated Gene Regions and Other Non-coding Elements written by Lucy W. Barrett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now compelling evidence that the complexity of higher organisms correlates with the relative amount of non-coding RNA rather than the number of protein-coding genes. Previously dismissed as “junk DNA”, it is the non-coding regions of the genome that are responsible for regulation, facilitating complex temporal and spatial gene expression through the combinatorial effect of numerous mechanisms and interactions working together to fine-tune gene expression. The major regions involved in regulation of a particular gene are the 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions and introns. In addition, pervasive transcription of complex genomes produces a variety of non-coding transcripts that interact with these regions and contribute to regulation. This book discusses recent insights into the regulatory roles of the untranslated gene regions and non-coding RNAs in the control of complex gene expression, as well as the implications of this in terms of organism complexity and evolution.

Book Synopsis Regulation of Transcription and Translation in Eukaryotes by : Ekkehard K.F. Bautz

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the 24th Mos bach Colloquium on "Regulation of Transcription and Trans lation in Eukaryotes" which was held April 26-28, 1973, in Mosbach, Germany, under the auspices of the Gesellschaft fiir Biologische Chemie. To the three of us (H. KERSTEN, P. KARLSON and myself) who were commissioned with the invitation of speakers, it was a difficult decision as to whether we should attempt to cover with some twenty contributions as many aspects of this broad topic as possible, or to sacrifice the intellectually perhaps more pleasing but more specula tive concepts and to concentrate on a few aspects of gene expression in reasonable detail. We unanimously decided on the latter course, leaving such important and timely topics as for example, hormone action, cyclic AMP and reverse transcription to the proceedings of other symposia, and con centrating on the four questions which are most basic to an understanding of the mechanisms of transcription and trans lation and for which fragmentary but nonetheless reliable experimental results have become available within the last few years. These are the structure of chromatin, the syn thesis of messenger RNA, the structure of the active ribo some, and the role of initiation factors in protein synthesis.
Book Synopsis Transfer and Expression of Eukaryotic Genes by : H.S. Ginsberg
Download or read book Transfer and Expression of Eukaryotic Genes written by H.S. Ginsberg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transfer and Expression of Eukaryotic Genes documents the progress in our understanding of the transfer and expression of eukaryotic genes. This book covers topics organized around three themes: gene expression and its regulation; in vivo gene transfer and development; and viral gene and oncogene systems. This text is divided into three sections encompassing 25 chapters and begins with an overview of the molecular basis of gene expression, with emphasis on transcription complexes that account for transcription control in eukaryotic genes. It then turns to experiments that assess the in vitro stimulatory effect of the SV40 72-bp repeat on specific transcription from heterologous promoter elements using a HeLa whole cell extract. The reader is methodically introduced to the regulation signals and factors of histone gene transcription; transcriptional control of beta-globin and liver-specific genes in mouse cells; and gene transfer in Drosophila and the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. This book also considers the splicing of messenger RNA precursors and the regulation of thymidine kinase enzyme expression, and then concludes with a chapter that describes the activation of the myc oncogene by chromosomal translocation. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in fields ranging from molecular genetics to microbiology, biochemistry, pathology, and immunology.
