Book excerpt: "The majority of employed Registered Nurses work in settings where there are no avenues for guidance with respect to negotiating such items as salary, working conditions, responsibilities and accountability. The purpose of this study was to determine the needs of employed Registered Nurses in the State of Rhode Island with regard to knowledge of the Labor relations process employed to achieve specific goals. The hypothesis was that there would be no significant differences in the knowledge base or needs of Registered Nurses with respect to Collective Bargaining or Labor Relations, despite their differences in years of experience, educational preparation, marital status, employment position or employment setting. To identify these perceived needs, a questionnaire was developed and forwarded to a random sampling of three hundred fifty (350) employed Registered Nurses and the returns from the samplings were identified and analyzed. The findings of the study indicated a wide range among the respondents, a high percentage of female Registered Nurses included in the sample, a variety of education programs preparing Registered Nurses, and a clear indication that Registered Nurses in the sample either remained or returned to nursing practice in less than a full time working setting. The majority of those responding classified themselves as Staff Nurses working in a hospital. The study further showed that while some discussions had been held within the institution regarding Collective Bargaining and/or Labor Relations, the majority of these were on non-paid and attendance was not particularly encouraged by management personnel. The results of the study indicated that a manual, prepared specifically for Registered Nurses who wish to become involved in Collective Bargaining, would be a welcome addition to the limited resources available for such purposes" - Abstract.
