An important late medieval house, once owned by the Holand (15th century) and Carew (16th century) families, the house was bought by the government in 1976. A lengthy period of repairs carried out by Exeter Archaeology and English Heritage provided an opportunity to investigate the history and architectural development of the house, as well as raising a series of research and conservation issues. This report publishes in great detail the work carried out and what it revealed about the standing building, its fabric and features. A specialist team from various fields, icnluding archaeologists, building historians, architects, conservators and a range of craftsmen, were brought together to investigate the documentary, pictorial and cartographic information on Bowhill and examine the fabric, stratigraphy, architecture and technologies employed in its construction.
