Book excerpt: Regional disparities in socio-economic development have long been a source of concern for policymakers, economists, geographers, and others. It is a global phenomenon observed in both developing and developed nations. Regional disparity occurs due to uneven regional development, which fluctuates over time based on social, cultural, economic, and demographic factors. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to find out the spatial variation of socio-economic development at the block level in Bankura district of West Bengal. The current study used 27 indicators across six dimensions (i.e., education, health, agriculture, banking and finance, livestock, and basic amenities) to measure the degree of spatial disparity. To examine spatial variations, common statistical techniques such as mean, standard deviation, and composite development index have been used.

Book excerpt: The process of development involves a significant change in the economic activities over different regions along with a change in the structure of the economy. The socio-economic change does not take place uniformly in different areas. Regional disparities are caused by a number of factors that lead to misallocation, under utilization of resource, etc. Therefore, when development over different regions occurs unequally, it becomes politically imperative to resort to corrective policy measured. Regional disparities lead to numerous economic, social, cultural problems. Regional balances leads to the under utilization or even for non-utilization of economic resource. In the present paper analyses has been made to study the imbalances in the level of development with spatial emphases on the regional dimension. To analyze the regional disparities of fifteen blocks of the district, thirty-eight variables have been selected. The identification of regional disparities and extend of inter-blocks disparities in seven different service different sectors and overall has been measured by using the Development Index (Deprivation Method). In the analysis it has been observed that the blocks of English Bazar and Bamangola attained the top position in the every sector while the blocks like Harishchandrapur-II and Kaliachak-III attained low level of development. Viewing the existing wide regional imbalances, planner and decision-makers should make comprehensive policies to reduce the gap in the level of development.

Book excerpt: India celebrated sixty years of independence on 15 August 2007. There have been several achievements and failures in economics and social development during this period. "There remain concerns regarding the agriculture sector, poverty reduction, employment generation, social sector development, reduction in regional disparities and protection of the environment. This volume comprising six section tries to address these issues. "The study begins with the theme Revisiting the State: New Forms of Governance. The paper under this theme has tried to bring out what groups are excluded or included in the urban governance of negotiated spaces'. Next them is on Public-private Partnerships in Basic Service Delivery: Impacts on the Poor. In the light of state's withdrawal from various public enterprises, the public partnership has occupied an important position and some of these public-private partnerships are discussed under the theme. India's current impressive economic growth is largely from the service sector and the inequalities in accessing these new employment opportunities are discussed under the theme. Access to Public and Corporate Sector Employment: Rural and Urban Dynamics. Under the next theme Uneven Economic Growth and Environmental Implications, the impact of uneven growth on environment and other natural resources are discussed. Though enough democratic space is created for Women participation, the research papers clearly show that their actual effective participation is negligible. These gender issues are discussed under the theme Gender and Generation as Divisions in India's Development. In the end the issues of conflicts arising out of displacements since 1950s and particularly the recent SEZs under theme Displacement, Conflict and Crises: The Flipside of Globalisation are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the fulfillment of two Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), namely poverty and inequality, in the Indian subcontinent. It examines the complex interplay among development, inequality and poverty in relation to corruption, environmental resource management, agricultural adjustment to climate change and institutional arrangements, with a special focus on the Northeastern region of the country. The topics covered offer a blend of theoretical arguments and empirical data with regard to the three main themes of the book, while also providing agricultural and environmental perspectives. The book also provides guidelines for policy initiatives for harnessing the region’s potential in the areas of industry, trade, sustainable use of mineral, forest and other natural resources, nature-based tourism through proper infrastructure development, and resolving land issues to achieve inclusive development. In addition to introducing some new questions on the development-ethnic conflict interface, it uses sophisticated tools such as the Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition method in consumption expenditure to show the endowment, and return to endowment effects; and techniques like spatial correlation-regression to analyze regional variation, co-integration, vector autoregression, the panel data technique and the adaptation index to climate change, to understand socio-economic complexities and the effect of the concerned variables on entrepreneurship and human development. The book offers a timely contribution to our understanding of major MDGs and highlights their successes and failures. It also includes analytical frameworks that are key to future policy initiatives. Further, it disseminates approaches and methods that improve livelihoods and standards of living through poverty reduction and promoting inclusive development along with sustainable utilization of available natural resources. Putting forward various ideas for creating a more sustainable future, it inspires and encourages readers to pursue further studies to address the gaps that still remain.

Book excerpt: This book emphasizes the need for experimenting with more deliberate and rigorous policy processes to attain balanced regional development, which can promote both equity and efficiency in India’s development discourse. The institutional mechanisms for dealing with regional imbalance in India have not been very successful so far. With rising discrepancies in development, demand for autonomy continues along with a new dimension of regionalism arising from submerged identity along with political and economic aspirations, which demanded new channels for solution. So far, attempts to create space for autonomy have possibly not optimally accommodated the conceptual mechanisms like equity and democratic process. Thus democratizing policy process using six pillars of voice: knowledge, objective, fundamental values, implementation framework and public awareness can ensure a better policy outcome for dealing with the persistent challenges of regional disparity in India. This book further focuses on the need for democratizing the policy process for regional development through discussion and inclusion. Such a transition needs innovation in policy regime, which can be attained through following six pillars (i) Democratic voice of stakeholders in policy development and implementation; (ii) Clear policy objectives that advance the common good, based on voice; (iii) Unbiased, sound and comprehensive knowledge and data bases. (iv) Consistency with constitutional values; (v) A sound implementation framework ensuring user-friendliness, transparency and rationality of decision-making processes, effective grievance redress, clear accountability and independent evaluation; (vi) Public awareness and support of policies with relevant and public participation in implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising densities of human settlements, migration and transport to reduce distances to market, and specialization and trade facilitated by fewer international divisions are central to economic development. The transformations along these three dimensions density, distance, and division are most noticeable in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, but countries in Asia and Eastern Europe are changing in ways similar in scope and speed. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives. Concern for these three billion often comes with the prescription that growth must be made spatially balanced. The WDR has a different message: economic growth is seldom balanced, and efforts to spread it out prematurely will jeopardize progress. The Report: documents how production becomes more concentrated spatially as economies grow. proposes economic integration as the principle for promoting successful spatial transformations. revisits the debates on urbanization, territorial development, and regional integration and shows how today's developers can reshape economic geography.

Book excerpt: This book provides an assessment of the impacts of human intervention on the natural environment and peoples' livelihoods through land-use conversion due to industrialization. Problems of land acquisition and the execution thereof have varying consequences that depend on the specific geographical as well as socio-political contexts in which they occur. This book covers a specific study of JSW Bengal Steel Ltd., which in 2014 planned to set up a 10.0 million ton per year integrated steel plant at the upper catchment of Sundra basin, the tributary of the Shilabati that ultimately pours to the river Rupnarayan, located at Salboni Block of Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, India. The project was ultimately put on hold, but caused many lingering environmental and socioeconomic problems due to the acquisition of formerly productive lands. The book examines this case to generate a database on the different aspects of land acquisition and its negative impacts on the geomorphology and hydrological of non-timber forest products, agricultural impacts resulting in livelihood changes, policy dimensions of land acquisition, and the impacts of delays in project implementation through a comparative analysis between projects-affected areas and non-project areas. The book will appeal to environmental managers and industry workers, as well as students and researchers in environmental economics, anthropology, and human geography.

Section II discusses contemporary issues of social welfare, and covers sustainable approaches in geo-heritage and ecotourism. Section III addresses the roots of various social conflicts and inequalities in relation to overpopulation, poverty, illiteracy, employment concerns, and human migration. Section IV highlights social security and areas of social deprivation, including urban affordability, gender equality, and women’s health. Section V covers social issues resulting from natural hazards and disasters. Section VI concludes the book with a discussion of the way forward for social sustainability. The book will be of interest to students, researchers, policy makers, environmentalists, NGOs, and social scientists.
