Book excerpt: Analysis of snow-cover observations made during November - March at 27 stations in Alaska, Canada and the northern United States for a 2 to 11 year period showed that the average snow density can be classified in four general categories. A nomograph in which the average winter air temperature and wind speed are the independent variables makes it possible to estimate the average snowcover density for any location in the Arctic, subarctic and North Temperate Zones. A comparison between observed and estimated densities for ten other test stations yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.91 with a standard error of estimate of 0.016 g/cu cm. An average snow density map of North America was drawn and the continent was divided into areas based on the four categories. (Author).

Book excerpt: Relative density is a measure of tree crowding compared to a reference level such as normal density. This stand attribute, when compared to management standards, indicates adequacy of stocking. The Pacific Coast Forest Survey Unit assesses the relative density of each stand sampled by summing the individual density contributions of each tree tallied, thus quantifying the effects of mixed species, mixed age, and irregular spacing on total stand density. Each tree's contribution reflects its stage of development, species, and social position. Plot clusters are designed to permit assessment of the effect of irregular spacing.

Book excerpt: It is debatable whether regional planning is an effective tool to solve the complex and interconnected problems facing the American metropolitan regions today. The study aims to test the hypothesis by comparing the metropolitan growth patterns of Cincinnati and Portland, as Portland has been proactive in the field of regional planning, whereas Cincinnati has made limited efforts in the direction. The aim is to conclude whether the approach adopted by Portland has been more effective in restricting the trends of de-centralization and outward migration, than Cincinnati. To compare the dynamics of metropolitan growth, the density patterns of the two metropolitan areas are compared for the thirty-year period from 1970-2000. Two methods are used to do so: density gradients and zones of urbanization. The density gradients of the metropolitan areas are created using two regression models: negative exponential and cubic polynomial. In zones of urbanization methodology, the entire metropolitan area is divided into five definite zones: core area, inner city, inner suburb, outer suburb, exurban area, to compare the location and quantity of growth in each of these zones. The study found that Cincinnati metropolitan area experienced the phenomenon of outward migration and decentralization, whereas Portland experienced suburbanization without the ill effects of decentralization. It was found that the approach adopted by Portland had limited positive impact on the growth patterns like restriction of outward migration, but the approach proved unable to control the process of suburbanization. It was also found that the approach adopted by Cincinnati resulted in sprawling metropolitan growth patterns as the region continued to decentralize and suburbanize.

Book excerpt: Regional Analysis, Volume II: Social Systems consists of studies on the general applications of the regional framework for analyzing socioeconomic systems as they exist and develop in territorial-environmental systems. This volume is concerned with social systems, emphasizing the interrelationships among the institutional components of complex societies. Marriage and kinship, political organization, formation of ethnic and cultural-territorial groups, and stratification systems that are affected by regional-environmental variables are also covered. This publication is beneficial to social and regional scientists, geographers, economists, social anthropologists, archeologists, sociologists, and political scientists intending to acquire knowledge of the implications of rural-urban relations and regional settlement patterns.

This book was released on 2019-06-29 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents timely work on the nature of the physical processes underpinning two of the basic characteristics of the gas structure in the innermost region of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN): ionized outflows and emission line regions. In addition, it describes physics-based methods for estimating the density of the astrophysical plasma surrounding AGN. All numerical computations of the photoionized gas employ the most advanced codes available (CLOUDY and TITAN). Calculations of the radiative transfer are based on the assumption of thermal and ionization equilibrium. Promising preliminary examples of comparison with current observations are included for several individual AGN. All of them suggest that the absorbing/emitting gas should have a density on the order of 1012 cm-3. Future observations will provide more objects to verify these results, and will allow us to put constraints on the launch radius of ionized outflows and therefore on the mass loading and kinetic energy outflow rates. These rates, in turn, are crucial to estimating whether the outflows have a significant feedback impact on star formation and metal enrichment in the interstellar medium of the host galaxy. In closing, the book discusses a representative example of applying powerful photoionization techniques to explain the complex physics of the AGN environment.

Book excerpt: In the last few years, advances in studies and research associated with the borderlands and the subsequent cross-border cooperation (CBC) have been increased and introduced all over the globe. Such advances essentially affect the cross-border strategies and policies, processes of border cooperation, and several complex border movements. Moreover, similar scenarios are encountered in ultra-peripheral and remote territories and low-density regions. There are common denominators, such as the limited land, water resources, and overexploitation of tourism, among many other factors, that make these specific territories critical case studies concerning their governance and sustainable development and growth. Analyzing Sustainability in Peripheral, Ultra-Peripheral, and Low-Density Regions investigates activities, processes, and behaviors in light of the new challenges and the desired sustainable development and growth model. It analyzes the dynamics and patterns ongoing in the peripheral, ultra-peripheral, and low-density regions regarding sustainability and the issues that may influence it. Covering topics such as glamping tourism, vegetation quality, and territorial cohesion, this premier reference source is an essential resource for government officials, business executives and managers, community leaders, environmentalists, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: In the past twenty years, the X-ray crystallography of organic molecules has expanded rapidly in two opposite directions. One is towards larger and larger biological macromolecules and the other is towards the fine details of the electronic structure of small molecules. Both advances required the development of more sophisticated methodologies. Both were made possible by the rapid development of computer technology. X-ray diffraction equipment has responded to these demands, in the one case by the ability to measure quickly many thousands of diffraction spectra, in the other by providing instruments capable of very high precision. Molecules interact through their electrostatic potentials and therefore their experimental and theoretical measurement and calculation is an essential component to understanding the electronic structure of chemical and biochemical reactions. In this ASI, we have brought together experts and their students from both the experimental and theoretical sides of this field, in order that they better understand the philosophy and complexity of these two complementary approaches.
