Book Synopsis Bilateral Aid to Latin America: Foreign Economic Assistance from Major Donor Nations by : Francis Adams
Download or read book Bilateral Aid to Latin America: Foreign Economic Assistance from Major Donor Nations written by Francis Adams and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive, detailed account of the bilateral economic assistance of six major donor nations-the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, and China-to the nations of Latin America. Focus is placed on assistance that is structured to meet basic human needs, enhance social equity, promote economic growth, preserve natural environments, and support political reform. It thus offers a basic foundation for understanding the nature, impact, and motivations of such assistance to Latin America. This study also offers a series of recommendations for reforming economic assistance to Latin America, with emphasis placed on improving the design, implementation, and oversight of development projects, enhancing coordination among aid institutions, ensuring local control and ownership of the development process, and empowering poor communities. When the poor are active participants in improving their communities, they gain the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to meet their own needs on a long-term basis. Since economic assistance will continue to be a major component of the foreign policies of donor states, it will be important to ensure that such assistance genuinely contributes to positive, meaningful, and lasting change in the region. Bilateral Aid to Latin America is an important volume for university libraries and research institutes. It will augment collections that focus on Latin America, international development, and economic assistance. The book would also be relevant for scholars and practitioners of Latin American development, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses on Latin America and international political economy.

Book Synopsis DFID and the World Bank by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee
Download or read book DFID and the World Bank written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-03-05 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank is a major provider of development funding, analysis and advice. The Bank is not perfect, however, and the context in which it operates continues to change. As a major shareholder and contributor to the World Bank, the UK has a distinct leadership role. The UK should articulate and pursue a vision for reform of the Bank. The Department for International Development's (DFID) and the Bank both have core objectives of poverty reduction. There is an increased responsibility on DFID to ensure that the Bank is organisationally effective and achieving a level of development impact that justifies the UK contributions. More consistent and transparent use of impact assessments by the World Bank across all of its lending is the single most important change in Bank practice that DFID should be pursuing. There should be more representation of developing countries in World Bank decision-making. Selection of the President of the World Bank, should be transparent and on merit, rather than in the gift of the United States. Other recommendations cover: women's empowerment; DFID staffing in relation to the Bank; and climate change. This last is an acute challenge for developing countries. As a development leader, the Bank should use its substantial resources and leverage to support viable renewable energy sources. But the urgency of climate change does not lessen the blight of poverty and the Bank's primary focus must remain on poverty reduction and development.
Book Synopsis Food Security and Global Environmental Change by : John Ingram
Download or read book Food Security and Global Environmental Change written by John Ingram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change (GEC) represents an immediate and unprecedented threat to the food security of hundreds of millions of people, especially those who depend on small-scale agriculture for their livelihoods. As this book shows, at the same time, agriculture and related activities also contribute to GEC by, for example, intensifying greenhouse gas emissions and altering the land surface. Responses aimed at adapting to GEC may have negative consequences for food security, just as measures taken to increase food security may exacerbate GEC. The authors show that this complex and dynamic relationship between GEC and food security is also influenced by additional factors; food systems are heavily influenced by socioeconomic conditions, which in turn are affected by multiple processes such as macro-level economic policies, political conflicts and other important drivers. The book provides a major, accessible synthesis of the current state of knowledge and thinking on the relationships between GEC and food security. Most other books addressing the subject concentrate on the links between climate change and agricultural production, and do not extend to an analysis of the wider food system which underpins food security; this book addresses the broader issues, based on a novel food system concept and stressing the need for actions at a regional, rather than just an international or local, level. It reviews new thinking which has emerged over the last decade, analyses research methods for stakeholder engagement and for undertaking studies at the regional level, and looks forward by reviewing a number of emerging 'hot topics' in the food security-GEC debate which help set new agendas for the research community at large. Book Synopsis The Europeanization of National Foreign Policies towards Latin America by : Lorena Ruano
Download or read book The Europeanization of National Foreign Policies towards Latin America written by Lorena Ruano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who shapes the European Union’s policy towards Latin America? How has this EU policy modified individual member states’ relations with the region? This book provides a comparative account of seven member states’ bilateral links with Latin America since 1945, in the context of their EU membership and based on the concept of ‘Europeanization’. It illustrates how and why the main architects of this EU policy have been Spain and Germany. In contrast, Poland, Sweden and Ireland, which had little previous interaction with Latin America, have developed their current relations with that region virtually as a result of their EU membership. The United Kingdom and France lie in the middle: they have been influential in certain policy-areas and key periods in history, while they have adapted to what is done at the EU level in others. Practitioners, established academic experts as well emerging scholars in the field bring to be bear a novel combination of pioneering research and cutting edge conceptual analysis on this important but neglected area of the EU’s foreign relations.

Book Synopsis World-Regional Social Policy and Global Governance by : Bob Deacon
Download or read book World-Regional Social Policy and Global Governance written by Bob Deacon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the case for and the prospects of the development of world-regional social policies as integral elements of a pluralistic, equitable and effective system of global governance. Focusing on transnational regionalism, this book examines the trajectory and crossing over of the three strands of scholarly analysis within the past decade which have given rise to this volume: the perceived negative impact of neo-liberal globalisation upon national social policy; the need for but the difficulty of securing reforms in the institutions of global social governance; and the increasing salience of the world-regional level of governance in handling cross-border issues. The authors develop an intellectual and research agenda that will also inform the political development of an international programme concerned with the social policy dimensions of regional governance. Combining the perspectives and collective expertise of a team of international scholars and activists, the book features: Theoretical and policy cases for a focus on regionalism and social policy A mapping and analysis of social policy dimensions of regional integration processes and formations in four continents An assessment of the regional dimensions of global agencies, in particular of the UN (ILO, WHO, UNESCO, UNDP) including the approach to regional social policy of the UN Regional Economic Commissions and Development Banks An articulation of a multi-levelled conceptualisation of global social governance within which regional associations of countries plays a significant part. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of social policy, development studies, international relations and political science, especially those focused on the public policy dimensions of globalisation, regionalisation and international development.
Book Synopsis The Education of Indigenous Citizens in Latin America by : Regina Cortina
Download or read book The Education of Indigenous Citizens in Latin America written by Regina Cortina and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume describes unprecedented changes in education across Latin America, resulting from the endorsement of Indigenous peoples' rights through the development of intercultural bilingual education. The chapters evaluate the ways in which cultural and language differences are being used to create national policies that affirm the presence of Indigenous peoples and their cultures within Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Guatemala. Describing the collaboration between grassroots movements and transnational networks, the authors analyze how social change is taking place at the local and regional levels, and they present case studies that illuminate the expansion of intercultural bilingual education. This book is both a call to action for researchers, teachers, policy-makers and Indigenous leaders, and a primer for practitioners seeking to provide better learning opportunities for a diverse student body.
