Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution The following pages and illustrations are the result of the study made by me in my leisure hours during the past winter, while preparing a paper on the subject of "Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution," which I read before the New York Historical Society on February 5, 1907, and again before the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in New York on April 19, 1907. The subject is not one in which very many people are interested, and yet I believe that the romance surrounding an old regimental color, as well as the historic and, possibly, the artistic interest in some of the flags shown on the following plates, will justify the printing of these pages. Most of the plates are from photographs of the flags; a few are from water-colors made by Mrs. Davis and myself, from which, as well as from the photographs, lantern slides were made to illustrate the paper when read. It will be observed that for flags which were carried in the Revolution for several years, nearly all of our colors are in remarkably fine condition. Since I first read the paper, I have obtained a good deal of information, which I have here added to my original paper. Not only are they essential artifacts that help reconstruct battles and wars and the stories of various regiments, but they are also vivid, colorful, evocative visual depictions of wars from an era before photography. In this meticulously researched book, military flag expert Steven W. Hill displays and explains the flags of the regiments which fought in North America in the French and Indian War and the American War of Independence. Comprehensive and in-depth, Battle Flags of the Wars for North America, 1754–1783: Foreign Armies and Regiments covers the regimental flags of the major combatants in the two major wars for North American in the eighteenth century—flags carried by regiments from Britain, France, Germany, and Spain. This has long been a subject surrounded by myth, legend, and inaccuracy; the last “standard” work is more than forty years old. Hill digs deep to correct old errors and assembles a complete record of the flags, drawing from archives and artifacts, and creates a reference that will stand the test of time—not only during the coming 250th anniversary years, but far beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberty and freedom: Americans agree that these values are fundamental to our nation, but what do they mean? How have their meanings changed through time? In this new volume of cultural history, David Hackett Fischer shows how these varying ideas form an intertwined strand that runs through the core of American life. Fischer examines liberty and freedom not as philosophical or political abstractions, but as folkways and popular beliefs deeply embedded in American culture. Tocqueville called them "habits of the heart." From the earliest colonies, Americans have shared ideals of liberty and freedom, but with very different meanings. Like DNA these ideas have transformed and recombined in each generation. The book arose from Fischer's discovery that the words themselves had differing origins: the Latinate "liberty" implied separation and independence. The root meaning of "freedom" (akin to "friend") connoted attachment: the rights of belonging in a community of freepeople. The tension between the two senses has been a source of conflict and creativity throughout American history. Liberty & Freedom studies the folk history of those ideas through more than 400 visions, images, and symbols. It begins with the American Revolution, and explores the meaning of New England's Liberty Tree, Pennsylvania's Liberty Bells, Carolina's Liberty Crescent, and "Don't Tread on Me" rattlesnakes. In the new republic, the search for a common American symbol gave new meaning to Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, Miss Liberty, and many other icons. In the Civil War, Americans divided over liberty and freedom. Afterward, new universal visions were invented by people who had formerly been excluded from a free society--African Americans, American Indians, and immigrants. The twentieth century saw liberty and freedom tested by enemies and contested at home, yet it brought the greatest outpouring of new visions, from Franklin Roosevelt's Four Freedoms to Martin Luther King's "dream" to Janis Joplin's "nothin' left to lose." Illustrated in full color with a rich variety of images, Liberty and Freedom is, literally, an eye-opening work of history--stimulating, large-spirited, and ultimately, inspiring.
