Book Synopsis Restoration as Fabrication of Origins by : Henri de Riedmatten

This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this publication is to clarify the relationships between material restoration and politics in Italian Renaissance art. The focus of this research is on the question of origin as a foothold for political, patrimonial, and cultural identity. These claims were enacted within a system which, rather than restoring the initial forms and meanings of existing objects, remodeled the past according to new identity requirements: spaces were reorganized, and works of art invested with new meanings. Their material and aesthetic reality was thus transformed and redefined. The aim is therefore to analyze the potential physical modifications of these artefacts in light of their symbolic recoding. Restoration practices in Italian Renaissance art Reassessing the concept of Renaissance Recording of ancient works for political purposes
Book Synopsis Debating the Neoliberal City by : Gilles Pinson
Download or read book Debating the Neoliberal City written by Gilles Pinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the neoliberal city has become a key structuring analytical framework in the field of urban studies. It explains both the ongoing transformation of urban policies and the socio-spatial effects of these policies within cities and highlights the prominent role of cities in the new geography of capitalism. Bringing together a team of leading scholars, this book challenges the neoliberal city thesis. It argues that the definition of neoliberalization may be more complex than it seems, resulting in over-simplified explanations of some processes, such as the rise of metropolitan governments or the importance given to urban economic development policies or gentrification. As a structuralist and macro-level theory, the "neoliberal city" does not shed light upon micro-level processes or identify and analyze actors’ logics and practices. Finally, the concept is profoundly influenced by the historical trajectories of the United Kingdom and the United States, and the generalization of this experience to other contexts often leads to a kind of academic ethnocentrism. This book argues that, on its own, the current conceptualizations of neoliberalization are insufficient. Instead, it should be analyzed alongside other transformative processes in order to provide an analytical framework to explain the variety of processes of change, motivations and justifications too easily labelled as urban neoliberalism. This unique and critical contribution will be essential reading for students and scholars alike working in Human Geography, Urban Studies, Economics, Sociology and Public Policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judith Joy Ross: Photographs 1978-2015 is an illuminating retrospective that explores the life and career of a revered American photographer, illustrated by two hundred of her images, many never before seen or published. The work of Judith Joy Ross marks a watershed in the lineage of the photographic portrait. Her pictures--unpretentious, quietly penetrating, startling in their transparency--consistently achieve the capacity to glimpse the past, present, and perhaps even the future of the individuals who stand before her lens. Adolescents swim at a local municipal park, ordinary people are at work and play. From immigrants and refugees, to tech workers and students, military reservists and civilians--all are incisively rendered with equal tenderness in Ross's black-and-white, large-format portraits. Published alongside the largest exhibition to feature Ross's work to date, and drawn from her extensive archive of photographs made over the span of more than thirty-five years, Judith Joy Ross: Photographs 1978-2015 encompasses the best work of this influential photographer.
Book Synopsis Gabrielle Petit by : Sophie De Schaepdrijver
Download or read book Gabrielle Petit written by Sophie De Schaepdrijver and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In central Brussels stands a statue of a young woman. Built in 1923, it is the first monument to a working-class woman in European history. Her name was Gabrielle Petit. History has forgotten Petit, an ambitious and patriotic Belgian, executed by firing squad in 1916 for her role as an intelligence agent for the British Army. After the First World War she was celebrated as an example of stern endeavour, but a hundred years later her memory has faded. In the first part of this historical biography Sophie De Schaepdrijver uses Petit's life to explore gender, class and heroism in the context of occupied Europe. Petit's experiences reveal the reality of civilian engagement under military occupation and the emergence of modern espionage. The second part of the book focuses on the legacy and cultural memory of Petit and the First World War. By analysing Petit's representation in ceremony, discourse and popular culture De Schaepdrijver expands our understanding of remembrance across the 20th century.
