Incapacidad para generar empleos estables y dignos, para contar con productos financieros buenos y accesibles, incapacidad para tener un robusto mercado interno y para permitir que las personas se desarrollen libremente y en paz. En términos de renta y capital, hay un acaparamiento mayúsculo por parte de un grupo selecto de personas que se han visto favorecidas en medio del poco crecimiento económico, existiendo también una excesiva e indebida influencia de estos poderes económicos y privados cobre la política pública del país, lo que ha terminado por afectar el ejercicio de derechos de los ciudadanos, y especialmente el de las personas más pobres, teniendo cada vez más restricciones en su nivel de vida. Esta obra nace de la necesidad de encontrar nuevas soluciones a viejos problemas que siguen aquejando a la sociedad mexicana y que tienen vínculos con el sistema financiero. Modificar este estado de las cosas exige replantear de fondo su operación, adoptando enfoques abiertos y desprejuiciados de política económica que sean capaces de utilizar el más amplio arsenal de recursos que se ofrecen. Además se propone una ruta de acción que pueda reducir el porcentaje de personas que viven en pobreza, logrando acortar la brecha de desigualdad existente.

The domestic banking approach in revisiting the 1982 financial crisis is a main distinction of this work and the consequences of the involvement of Mexican banks in international finance a major contribution to the literature. Beyond its thoroughly international approach, the book addresses a broad array of disciplines: financial history, political economy, international relations and business history. While the focus is on financial crisis, its implications extend to current regulatory and financial policy relative to crisis and non-crisis matters. In addition to providing a template for understanding other instances of financial crisis, the book points the way to research in a wide range of additional questions. These include the economic role of foreign capital, the transmission of financial crisis, and the decision criteria of states during crises. Each specific case study shows how the reforms conformed to the ideas of the dominant consensus on economic policy and how they delivered an inefficient incentive structure.
